  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals suffer from the problem of large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) which complicates the design of the analog front-end of the system. Companding is a well-known PAPR reduction technique that reduces the PAPR by transforming the signal amplitude using a deterministic function. In this paper, a novel piecewise linear companding transform is proposed. The design criteria for the proposed transform is developed by investigating the relationships between the compander and decompander's profile and parameters with the system's performance metrics. Using analysis and simulations, we relate the companding parameters with the bit error rate (BER), out-of-band interference (OBI), amount of companding noise, computational complexity and average power. Based on a set of criteria developed thereof, we formulate the design of the proposed transform. The main aim is to preserve the signal's attributes as much as possible for a predetermined amount of PAPR reduction. Simulations are carried out to evaluate and compare the proposed scheme with the existing companding transforms to demonstrate the enhancement in PAPR, BER and OBI performances.

  • An approximate analysis is presented for multi-story setback buildings subjected to ground motions. Setback buildings with mass and stiffness discontinuities are common in modern architecture and quite often they are asymmetric in plan. The proposed analysis provides basic dynamic data (frequencies and peak values of base resultant forces) and furthermore an overview of the building response during a ground excitation. The method is based on the concept of the equivalent single story system, which has been introduced by the author in earlier papers for assessing the response of uniform in height buildings. As basic quantities of the dynamic response of elastic setback buildings can be derived by analyzing simple systems, a structural layout of minimum elastic rotational response can be easily constructed. The behavior of such structural configurations, which is basically translational into the elastic phase, is also examined into the post elastic phase when the strength assignment of the various bents is based on a planar static analysis under a set of lateral forces simulating an equivalent 'seismic loading'. It is demonstrated that the almost concurrent yielding of all resisting elements preserves the translational response, attained at the end of the elastic phase, to the post elastic one.

  • A turbulent non-premixed ethylene flame, which was set up in a vertical wind tunnel, was examined to understand the effect of turbulent mixing on formations of soot and gaseous species in the flames. Temperature and velocity profiles were measured using uncoated thermocouples and LDV system. Gaseous samples were withdrawn by using a water cooled stainless iso-kinetic gas sampling probe. The samples for inorganic compounds and light hydrocarbons were collected with sampling bottles and were analyzed by a gas chromatography. The samples for aromatic hydrocarbons were collected on a sorbent tube and were analyzed on a GC/MS system. Some of main results were followed. CO and $CO_2$ were measured relatively in early part of flame and the concentration of CO was greater than that of $CO_2$ all over the early flame region due to the scavenging of the oxidizing species OH by soot particles. Aromatic hydrocarbons were measured at x/D=122 along the radial direction and main important species were benzene, xylene, toluene, styrene, indene, naphthalene. The peak points of these compounds occurred at r/D=0.8 apart from the center of flame, around in which the concentration of $C_2H_2$ decayed relatively rapidly from the maximum value.

  • The expertise required in the judicious use of nonlinear finite element (FE) packages for design-assistance purposes is not widely available to the average engineer, whose sole aim may be to obtain an estimate for a single design parameter, such as the limit load capacity of a structure. Such a parameter may be required for the design of a proposed reinforced concrete (RC) floor slab or bridge deck with a given set of geometrical and material details. This paper outlines a procedure for developing design-assistance equations for carrying out such predictions for partially restrained RC slabs under uniformly distributed loading condition, based on a database of FE results previously generated from a large number of 'numerical model' slabs. The developed equations have been used for predicting the peak loads of a number of experimental RC slabs having varying degrees of edge restraints; with results showing a reasonable degree of accuracy and low level of scatter. The simplicity of the equations makes them attractive and their successful use in the field of application reported in this paper suggest that the outlined procedure may also be extended to other classes of concrete structures.

  • Nanoparticles of $Fe_2O_3$ with a mean particle size of 4-30 nm have been prepared by a pulsed wire evaporation method, and its structural and magnetic properties were studied by SQUID magnetometer and Mossbauer spectroscopy. From the main peak intensity of XRD and absorption rate of Mossbauer spectrum, the amounts of $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ and $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ in as-prepared sample are about 70% and 30%, respectively. The coercivity (53 Oe) and the saturation magnetization (14 emu/g) are about 20% of those of the bulk $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$. The low value of coercivity and saturation magnetization indicate that the $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ phase nearly shows the spin glass-like behavior. Analysis of the set of Mossbauer spectrum indicates a distribution of magnetic hyperfine fields due to the particle size distribution yielding 20 nm of average particle size. The magnetic hyperfine parameters are consistent with values reported of bulk $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ and $alpha-Fe_2O_3$. A quadrupole line on the center of spectrum represents of superparamagnetic phase of $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$ with a mean particle size of 7 nm or below.

  • The prediction of various emissions from coal combustion is an important subject of researchers and engineers because of environmental consideration. Therefore, the development of the models for predicting pollutants very fast has received much attention from international research community, especially in the field of safety assessment. In this work, response surface method was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was set with the numerical simulation of a drop tube furnace (DTF) to predict the spatial distribution of pollutant concentrations as well as final ones. The distribution of carbon dioxide in DTF was assumed to have Boltzman function, and the resulted function with parameters of a high $R^2$ value facilitates predicting an accurate distribution of $CO_2$. However, CO distribution had a difference near peak concentration when Gaussian function was introduced to simulate the CO distribution. It might be mainly due to the anti-symmetry of the CO concentration in DTF, and hence Extreme function was used to permit the asymmetry. The application of Extreme function enhanced the regression accuracy of parameters and the prediction was in a fairly good agreement with the new experiments. These results promise the wide use of statistical models for the quantitative safety assessment.

  • In this paper, we dealt with a partial discharge(PD) measurement method that has been accepted as an effective and non-destructive technique to estimate insulation performance of low-voltage electric and electronic devices. The PD measurement system Is composed of a coupling network, a low noise amplifier, and associated electronics. h shielded box Is adopted to make a better measurement environment against around noise. A low cut-off frequency of the coupling network estimated by a sinusoidal wave input was 125 kHz (-3 dB). Calibration tests on laboratory set-up have shown that the PD measurement system has a stable sensitivity of 10 mV/pC. In an application test oil a low-voltage three phase Induction motor (5 HP), we could detect 0.53 pC level of partial discharge at the applied voltage of AC 650 $V_{peak}$.

  • The chemical water quality and fish assemblage of Dong Stream to assessment of environmental improvement after discharge seawater were investigated from July to December 2013. BOD and DO were significantly different between before and after discharge seawater, while pH and SS did not significant. A total of 11 fish species, 218 individuals and 10,525.1g were collected. Dominant fish species were Mugil cephalus, Konosirus punctatus, Acanthogobius flavimanus and Leiognathus nuchalis which account for 77.5% of total individuals collected, and they were estuarian species. Peak number of species and individuals, and biomass occurred in September, whereas diversity index were highest in November. The water ecosystem of Dong Stream have been changed estuarian environment. As a result of stream assessment on water quality and ecosystem, water quality have been improved as 'III' grade. These results suggested that stream restoration policies such as drain pipes maintenance, management of pollution sources and riverbed dredging to improve environment and recover habitate of Dong Stream were need for set up and establishment of regular monitoring system.

  • This paper analyzed the characteristics of the Lossy JPEG of the meteorological satellite image, and analyzed the quality of the Lossy JPEG compression, which is proper for the LRIT(Low Rate Information Transmission) to be serviced to the SDUS(Small-scale Data Utilization Station) system of the COMS(Communication, Oceans, Meteorological Satellite). Since COMS is to start running after 2008, we collected the data of the MTSAT-1R(Multi-functional Transport Satellite -1R) for analysis, and after forming the original image to be used to LRIT by each channel and time zone of the satellite image data, we set the different quality with the Lossy JPEG compression, and compressed the original data. For the characteristic analysis of the Lossy JPEG, we measured PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Rate), compression rate and the time spent in compression following each quality of Lossy JPEG compression. As a result of the analysis of the satellite image data of the MTSAT-1R, the ideal quality of the Lossy JPEG compression was found to be 90% in the VIS Channel, 85% in the IR1 Channel, 80% in the IR2 Channel, 90% in the IR3 Channel and 90% in the IR4 Channel.

  • In recent years, the production value of Taiwanese mold and die industries have reached to a high peak in 1998, in amount of NT 604 hundred million dollars. But in recent years production value are going down year by year, till year of 2001 the production value have down to NT 394 hundred million dollars. Its main reason might be the major product were following in medium and low price category, the high accuracy and high cost mold and die still rely on import aboard. Therefore how to made the related technical database system on various field to provide the industry user to promote industries competition ability in mold and die is really urgent matter at this moment. In this research, we will offer how to apply the Visual Basic program language to edit a set of more perfect database system of mold and die material selection. At the present time, we have constructed complete Knowledge-Base-System of intelligence for forging mold and die material, the most related data from the existed data, the others are through our additional experimental results. By using this system by the user can got the related and need data easily, we hope it will reduce designing time and cost for mold and die.
