  • Oscillating wave amplitude in a bottom-mounted OWC chamber designed for wave energy converter is investigated by applying characteristic wave conditions in Korean coastal water. The effects of shape parameters of OWC chamber in a view of wave energy absorbing capability are analyzed. Both experimental and numerical approaches are adopted and their results are compared to optimize the shape parameters which can result in a maximum power production under given wave distribution. The experiment was carried out in a wave flume under 2-D assumption of OWC chamber. The numerical scheme employed a hybrid Green integral equation which adopts the Rankine Green function inside chamber to take account of fluctuating air pressure, while it uses the Kelvin Green function in outer domain. Air duct diameter, chamber width, and submerged depths of front skirt and back wall of chamber changes the magnitude and peak frequency of wave absorption significantly.

  • The new coherent scatter ionospheric radar has been operating at Gyerong city ($36.18^{\circ}N$, $127.14^{\circ}E$, dip lat $26.7^{\circ}N$), South Korea. This VHF radar is consisted of 24 Yagi antennas having 5 elements and observes the E- and F-region field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) in a single frequency of 40.8 MHz with a peak power of 24 kW. We present the first results of the E- and F-region FAIs over Korea by using the new VHF coherent scatter ionospheric radar. The morphological and echo characteristics are studied in terms of their echo strength, Doppler velocity and also by spectral width values. From the continuous observations from December 2009, we found ionospheric E- and F-region FAIs appeared frequently. The most interesting and striking observations for E region are occurrence of daytime E-region irregularities and strong Quasi-Periodic (QP) echoes at nighttime. And for F region, strong post-sunset and pre-sunrise FAIs appeared frequently. The VHF radar observations over Korea are discussed in the light of current understanding of mid-latitude E- and F-region FAIs.

  • A simulation using the finite-difference time-domain method to analyze the electromagnetic interactions between a cellular phone and the human body was conducted, and a synthesis of a bone-equivalent material to make a human head phantom was performed. A test model of the cellular phone was fabricated to measure its reflection coefficient and radiation pattern in the free space. Various effects of the human body on the characteristics of the phone, such as input impedance, reflection coefficient, radiation pattern, and radiation efficiency are analyzed as the distance between the head and the phone antenna varies. When the phone was operated close to the head, the resonant frequency of the antenna decreased by up to 12%. With the output power of 0.6W, as long as the distance was larger than 30mm, the 1-g averaged peak SAR was below the ANSI/IEEE safety guideline, 1.6 W/kg. To synthesize the bone-equivalent material, an epoxy with hardener and a graphite powder were used as basis ingredients, and a small amount of a conducting epoxy was added to control the conductivity of the material. A material having a relative permittivity of 18.04 and a conductivity of 0.347, which are close to those of the bone at 850 MHz, was synthesized.

  • In recent years, OFDMA(orthogonal frequency division multiple access) and SC-FDMA(Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access) have been widely studied for the uplink of a mobile communication system. In this paper, PAPR(Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) and BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of the OFDMA and SC-FDMA systems are studied in relation to the uplink of a mobile communication system. Three kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in the OFDMA system and 2 kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in SC-FDMA system are suggested to compare and improve system performance. Simulation results show that in the OFDMA system, the first sub-band allocation method has better PAPR reduction performance than the other methods. In the SC-FDMA system, the distributed allocation method offers similar P APR, compared with the sub-band allocation method. P APR can be further reduced by adding a spectrum shaping filter with an appropriate roll of factor. Furthermore, it is found that on average, SC-FDMA can reduce the PAPR by more than 5 dB compared to OFDMA, when the total sub-carrier number is 1,024 and the sub-carrier number allocated to each user changes trom 8 to 512. Because of the frequency diversity and low PAPR characteristics, SC-FDMA system of the distributed sub-carrier allocation method can achieve better BER performance than the OFDMA system.

  • Ferroelectric $YMnO_{3}$ thin films were etched with $Ar/Cl_{2}$ and $CF_{4}/Cl_{2}$ inductivly coupled plasma (ICP). The maximum etch rate of $YMnO_{3}$ thin film was $300{\AA}/min$ at a $Ar/Cl_{2}$ gas mixing ratio of 2/8, a RF power of 800 W, a dc bias of 200 V, a chamber pressure of 15 mTorr, and a substrate temperature of ${30^{\circ}C}$. From the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis , yttrium not only etched by chemical reactions with Cl radicals, but also assisted by Ar ion bombardments in $Ar/Cl_{2}$ plasma. In $CF_{4}/Cl_{2}$ plasma, yttrium are remained on the etched surface of $YMnO_{3}$ and formed of nonvolatile YFx compounds Manganese etched effectively by chemical reactions with Cl and F radicals. From the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the (0004) diffraction peak intensity of the $YMnO_{3}$ thin film etched in $Ar/Cl_{2}$ plasma shows lower value than that in $CF_{4}/Cl_{2}$ plasma. It is indicates that the crystallinty of $YMnO_{3}$ thin film is more easily damaged by the Ar ion bombardment than the changes of stoichiometry due to nonvolatile etch by-products.

  • The springing response of a large blunt ship was considered to be influenced by a second order interaction between the incoming irregular wave and the blunt geometry of the forebody of the ship. Little efforts have been made to simulate this complicated fluid-structure interaction phenomenon under irregular waves considering the second order effect; hence, the above mentioned premise still remains unproven. In this paper, efforts were made to quantify the second order effect between the wave and vibrating flexible ship structure by analyzing the experimental data obtained through the model basin test of the scaled-segmented model of a large blunt ship. To achieve this goal, the measured vertical bending moment and the wave elevation time history were analyzed using a higher order spectral analysis technique, where the quadratic interaction between the excitation and response was captured by the cross bispectrum of two randomly oscillating variables. The nonlinear response of the vibrating hull was expressed in terms of a quadratic Volterra series assuming that the wave excitation is Gaussian. The Volterra series was then orthogonalized using Barrett's procedure to remove the interference between the kernels of different orders. Both the linear and quadratic transfer functions of the given system were then derived based on a Fourier transform of the orthogonalized Volterra series. Finally, the response was decomposed into a linear and quadratic part to determine the contribution of the second order effect using the obtained linear and quadratic transfer functions of the system, combined with the given wave spectrum used in the experiment. The contribution of the second order effect on the springing response of the analyzed ship was almost comparable to the linear one in terms of its peak power near the resonance frequency.

  • LED arrays with pixel numbers of $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, and $5{\times}5$ have been studied in this paper in order to enhance the optical output power and decrease heat dissipation of an AlGaInP-based light emitting diode display device (pixel size of $280{\times}280{\mu}m$) fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems. Simulation results showed that the thermal resistances of the $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, $5{\times}5$ arrays were $52^{\circ}C/W$, $69.7^{\circ}C/W$, and $84.3^{\circ}C/W$. The junction temperature was calculated by the peak wavelength shift method, which showed that the maximum value appears at the center pixel due to thermal crosstalk from neighboring pixels. The central temperature would be minimized with $40{\mu}m$ pixel pitch and $150{\mu}m$ substrate thickness as calculated by thermal modeling using finite element analysis. The modeling can be used to optimize parameters of highly integrated AlGaInP-based LED arrays fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems technology.

  • Underwater ambient noise was measured at the eastern and western costal sites of Jeju Island where the water depth was 20 m by a hydrophone moored at mid-depth (10 m) for 4 months. These eastern and western sites were selected as potential sites for offshore wind power generator and the current wave energy generator, respectively. Ambient noise was affected by environmental data such as wind and wave, which were collected from nearby weather stations and an observation station. Below 100 Hz, ambient noise was changed about 5 dB ~ 20 dB due to low and high tide. Below 1 kHz, wave and wind effects were the main source for ambient noise, varying up to 25 dB. Ambient noise was strongly influenced by wave at lower frequency and by wind at higher frequency up to over 1 kHz. The higher frequency range over 10 kHz was influenced by rainfall and biological sources, and the spectrum was measured about 10 dB higher than the peak spectrum level from Wenz curve at this frequency range.

  • The effects of mugwort juice on the gel properties of corn starch (CS), mung bean starch (MS), and potato starch (PS) were investigated. Water holding capacities of three starches were increased with addition of the juice. Solubilities of CS and MS were also increased. Swelling power was increased in CS but decreased in MS. Viscoamylogram showed that 5% addition of the juice lowered the initial gelatinization temperatures of CS and MS, but raised the temperature of PS. While peak viscosities of CS and MS pastes were decreased a little, the viscosity of PS paste was decreased remarkably from 2,280 BU to 845 BU. Addition of mugwort juice did not affect significantly the hardness of starch gels during 7 days of storage at $25^{\circ}C\;and\;4^{\circ}C$. Degrees of gelatinization of the starch gels were affected by addition of the juice, especially in PS, during storage. Freeze-thaw stabilities of three gels were not changed by addition of the juice. The starch gels added with the mugwort juice had smooth surface visually because the crude fibrous materials of mugwort were removed during juice preparation.

  • The a-C : H films have been grown on the glass substrate by PECVD method, where plasma was generated with a 60 Hz line power source. The growth rate of films is found to be dependent of the partial pressure of $C_2H_2$. This growth rate is a little higher than that in which $CH_4$ instead of $C_2H_2$ is used. The transmittance is also much higher(95%). The optical energy gap of films is in the range of 1.4~1.8eV depending on the partial pressure of $C_2H_2$. However, this energy gap, which is 1.8eV, is found to be independent of the partial pressure of $C_2H_2$ for the thick films above $2000{\AA}$. The carbonization is checked from peak intensities of D ($sp^3$) and G($sp^2$) peaks in Roman spectra. The hydronization and C-H bonding status in films can also be determined from FTIR results. Both the bonding strength of C-H and the ratio of $sp^3$ to $sp^2$ in bonding are found to be slightly dependent of partial pressure of $C_2H_2$. Judging from above results, we can conclude that the best value for partial pressure of $C_2H_2$ in growing process of thick films is about 13.8%.
