  • More than sixty percentages of the highway constructed by concrete pavements in South Korea and over half of the concrete pavements were twenty years or older. The most of South Korea road is hard to provide a bypass in conditions of network of roads. Asphalt concrete overlay has been used for the overlay of aged concrete pavement. However, the cost of maintenance and rehabilitation in an asphalt overlay is expensive by early damage. Therefore, bonded concrete overlay was recently attempted in South Korea as an alterative method of rehabilitation for aged concrete pavement. Hence, it needed to investigate the factors to find performance of the bonded concrete overlay life. However, there is no performance data of the concrete overlay in South Korea. This study was to make a database of an affecting of the pavement life and draws statistical analysis of the performance data on the LTPP (Long Term Pavement Performance) database of U.S.A.

  • Recently, usage bicycle is encouraged to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution. For this purpose, bike road constructions are actively performed. However, types of pavement used in bike roads have high construction cost and performance comparing the required capacity of bike roads. Thus, an economical pavement type for construction is necessary for the effective development. Roller compacted concrete pavement have good requirements, such as easy construction and low costs, high structural performance of hydration and internal communication aggregation on compaction for bicycle roads. However, the pool landscape surface and resistance to deicer damage cannot be applied to the construction of bicycle roads. Thus, for solving this problem used coating which may have effect of improving the landscape and environmental resistance. To examine this effect were evaluated performance of roller compacted concrete pavement on the coating.

  • Premature failures in pavements are frequently reported due to rapid increasement in traffic volume, heavy vehicles, and high temperature in the summer. Based on this concept in mind, Korea Highway Corporation established the Test Road Operation Center to estimate the pavement performance. To evaluate the pavement performance effectively using the field data, wandering is an important topic in pavement analysis. In this study, portable wandering system was developed and analyzed to investigate the pavement responses due to the dynamic truck passes, and analyzed the wandering to dynamic load test. The test results revealed that the advantages of laser devices were noticeable compare to the other measuring ones. To understand the behavioral characteristics of pavements using the wandering measurement devices, dynamic truck tests were conducted in the field. Test results showed that the effects of wandering on asphalt pavement were significant. The data analysis using this wandering effect is considered as an important tool in performance analysis of asphalt concrete pavement.

  • PURPOSES : Bonded concrete overlay is a favorable maintenance method since the material properties are similar to existing concrete pavements. In addition, bonded concrete overlay has advantage of structural performance since the overlay layer and the existing pavement perform as a monolithic layer. It is important to have suitable bond strength criteria to secure the performance of bonded concrete overlay. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing bond strength characteristics between existing concrete pavement and overlay material. METHODS: Bond strength between overlay and existing pavement are measured and analyzed for various conditions such as the type of overlay materials, compressive and flexure strength of overlay and existing pavement, and deterioration status of existing pavement. RESULTS: The strength of overlay material does not significantly influence the bond strength. The overlay of ultra-rapid hardening cement generally gives low bond strength. However, ultra rapid hardening polymer modified concrete gives robust bond strength. The deterioration of existing concrete significantly decrease the bond strength. CONCLUSIONS: Bond strength of bonded concrete overlay highly depends on condition of existing concrete pavement rather than overlay material.

  • A method for repairing cracks using low-viscosity resins has been proposed as a construction method that can quickly repair roads from deterioration. However, when the viscosity of the epoxy resin is high, there is a limit in that it is difficult for the material to penetrate into microcracks and cracks in the concrete top plate. In this study, an epoxy thin-layer pavement repair method was developed using low-viscosity PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate) to repair microcracks on the pavement surface and pavement layer and reinforce the pavement surface. Materials necessary for the thin-layer packaging method were developed, and performance was evaluated to meet the epoxy binder quality standards. As a result, all materials met the required performance.

  • This study presents experimental findings on the performance of cement concrete pavement incorporating mineral admixtures such as ground granulated blastfurnace slag and silica fume. Flexural strength, compressive strength, charge passed, diffusion coefficient of chloride ions and initial surface absorption of cement concrete pavement incorporating mineral admixtures were periodically measured and the corresponding results were compared to those of plain concrete pavement. As a result, strength behaviors of concrete pavement were dependent on the types of mineral admixtures. However, it was true that incorporation of silica fume had a beneficial effect on compressive strength development. Furthermore, the application of mineral admixtures led to a lower diffusion coefficient of chloride ions compared to plain concrete pavement. Based on the experimental results, the present study would be helpful to design high-performance cement concrete pavement.

  • Geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement is a pavement type applicable to overlay for repair in addition to new construction. The geosynthetic materials are placed between the asphalt layers to stop or delay propagation of the cracking existing at lower layers and to reduce the rutting. In this study, the cracking, rutting, IRI, and deflection were investigated to compare the performance between geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement and ordinary or polymer modified asphalt pavement. Based on field conditions, the 11 sections were classified into 3 groups; sections proper to compare, sections with restrictions to compare, sections with difficulties in comparing, and the data was statistically analyzed. Larger resistance to rutting and increased IRI were measured at the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement sections comparing to the ordinary or polymer modified asphalt pavement sections. However, the deflections of the pavements were similar and the resistance to the cracking could not be compared because of short pavement lives.

  • This study aims to explore a purely mechanistic pavement analysis approach where viscoelasticity and fracture of asphalt mixtures are considered to accurately predict deformation and damage behavior of flexible pavements. To do so, the viscoelastic and fracture properties of designated pavement materials are obtained through experiments and a fully mechanistic damage analysis is carried out using a finite element method (FEM). While modeling crack development can be done in various ways, this study uses the cohesive zone approach, which is a well-known fracture mechanics approach to efficiently model crack initiation and propagation. Different pavement configurations and traffic loads are considered based on three main functional classes of roads suggested by FHWA i.e., arterial, collector and local. For each road type, three different material combinations for asphalt concrete (AC) and base layers are considered to study damage behavior of pavement. A concept of the approach is presented and a case study where three different material combinations for AC and base layers are considered is exemplified to investigate progressive damage behavior of pavements when mixture properties and layer configurations were altered. Overall, it can be concluded that mechanistic pavement modeling attempted in this study could differentiate the performance of pavement sections due to varying design inputs. The promising results, although limited yet to be considered a fully practical method, infer that a few mixture tests can be integrated with the finite element modeling of the mixture tests and subsequent structural modeling of pavements to better design mixtures and pavements in a purely mechanistic manner.

  • Rut-resistance pavement is adopted to prevent pavement from plastic deformation since 1998. The objective of this paper is to investigate performance and economic efficiency between rut-resistance pavement and conventional hot-mix asphalt(HMA) on national highway. The pavement deterioration models incorporated in HDM-4 have been calibrated and adapted to local road conditions based on observed pavement rut-depth data. Based on calibration result of HDM-4, the economic evaluation including road agency cost and user cost is performed for 34 road pavement sections. Furthermore, we presented optimal timing for maintenance and performance levels subject to different budget. We found that rut-resistance pavement is performing better than conventional hot-mix asphalt in most road sections. Furthermore, we confirmed that the application of HDM-4 is useful for pavement project planning and evaluation. More investigation is needed to enlarge the scope of the pavement data and to explore more deeply socio-environmental cost and delay cost.

  • PURPOSES : This study focuses on conducting pavement rehabilitation for more deteriorated roads given a limited government budget. METHODS : Therefore, we apply a optimization programming model of the permutation algorithm used for rehabilitating more deteriorated pavement areas, which is subjected to the limited budget. RESULTS : The permutation algorithm was evaluated in terms of determining the maximized rehabilitation of deteriorated pavement areas, using the newly developed performance models such as fatigue cracking, rutting, international roughness index(IRI) through the surveying data from 2006 to 2012. When compared with a traditional model of the so-called worst-first sequence(WFS) method, the permutation algorithm worked better than the WFS method, resulting in covering more deteriorated pavement areas given the limited government budget. CONCLUSIONS : Through a case study, it could be concluded that the permutation algorithm provides more reliable results in terms of rehabilitating more deteriorated pavement areas given the limited budget.
