  • Catalase (CAT) decomposes hydrogen peroxide that is toxic to the body. In this study, simple and sensitive detector has been developed for observing catalase activity using liquid crystal droplet system. Microscale LC droplet patterns are formed by spreading aldehyde-doped nematic liquid crystal on pre-treated glass slides. When hydrogen peroxide is added, aldehyde is oxidized and amphiphiles are formed. Dodecanoates cause the pattern to transit from bright to dark as they self-assemble to form a carboxyalte monolayer at the interface. When a drop of pre-incubated CAT and hydrogen peroxide mixture is placed onto the pattern, bright fan-shape is observed. This planar optical appearance indicates that catalase has decomposed hydrogen peroxide. Compared to the detectors that have been previously developed, this system is more sensitive with detection limit of 1fM. This research suggests further studies to be on LC droplet patterning to develop highly sensitive and methodologically simple sensors for various chemicals.

  • This paper analyzed the collections of Dries Van Noten and found the influences of oriental ethnic costumes. The oriental looks which he had shown in his collections are followings : Largely, the menswear designs of Van Noten took the concept of an easy and loose style which is a common shape in oriental ethnic costumes. Especially various transformations of layered look were found in his collections. Design ideas of Van Noten's womenswear style included variations of a sarong style, a kimono style, and etc. Also in his womenswear collections, various styles of layered look were shown. He often used lustrous fabrics like satin, brocade, and damask which are driven from the oriental region. His collections had Chinese dragon-or flower-pattern, Japanese geometric pattern, and Indian henna pattern. The patterns were embroidered or gilded.

  • In this paper, a technique is presented for broadbanding the bow-tie slot antenna fed by a CPW(coplanar waveguide). The bandwidth performance of existing bow-tie slot designs is greatly enhanced by optimizing the slot shape and properly adjusting the characteristic impedance of the coplanar waveguide feeding the slot. To connect the 50-ohm input coaxial line to the CPW feed line, a linear taper in the CPW is employed. The designed antenna shows a 3.5 $\~$ 10.0 GHz impedance bandwidth, a 3.5 $\~$ 6.0 GHz pattern bandwidth, and a 5.5 $\~$ 7.5 dBi gain over 3.5 $\~$ 6.0 GHz. Above 6.0 GHz, the antenna radiation pattern appreciably deviates from the typical dipolar pattern.

  • As our world is becoming more and more globalized, nations tend to turn their interests towards their unique legacy and traditional culture. This research is intended to re-illuminate the Korean beauty through the Lotus Pattern, a traditional factor, from the Chosun Dynasty, and at the same time, analyze how its peculiar representation and figural elements can be reflected in modern fashion designs. The results will be an essential factor in creating exclusive and original designs. Research method was theoretical research from documents and to refer to positive data on preserved relics, and research contents consists of analysis on the use of lotus patterns in artworks that were exhibited during 2000 to 2008 by Korean and foreign artists. Results showed that lotus patterns that were used during the Chosun Dynasty are categorized by shape, composition form, and structural form. Applying these results, a total of 8 works were designed and created.

  • An optical method for surface roughness estimation based on statistical analysis of the light intensity of a scattered laser beam pattern. The method is very simple but has a disadvantage that no more information than the averaged roughness is estimated. In this study a new try was conducted to derive more advanced surface information from the details of the light intensity distribution. Some periodic ripples among the light intensity distribution being assumed to relate with scratch left on the machined surface, a corresponding surface profile is estimated from the ripples using FFT and IFFT algorithm. IFFT technique is used to extract some dominant signal components among the intensity distribution. Compared to the measured profiles by a stylus type surf-tester, the profiles obtained through the proposed method are probably acceptable in a sense of the profile shape. Calibration of the amplitude needs more works in the future.

  • An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) has been carried out to predict the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extrude length of the lateral extrusion of a spider for the automotive universal joint. For the upper bound analysis, a kinematically admissible velocity field(KAVF) is proposed. From the proposed velocity field, the upper bound load, the deformation pattern and the average length of the extruded billets are determined by minimizing the total energy consumption rate which is a function of unknown velocities at each element. Experiments are carried out with antimony-lead billets at room temperature using the rectangular shape punch. The theoretical prediction of the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extruded length are good in agreement with the experimental results.

  • A set of horse bit from the Eonnam-ri site consists of three parts, pyo , ham , andinsu , and each part takes a shape of a piece of bar. According to current typological study, the pyo is S type, the insu is two-braided line type, and the outer rim of the ham is double rim type, respectively. According to X-ray test, inlaid design seems to have been decorated on the whole surface of the iron bit, originally. However, inlaid pattern partially remained. While the part of bit stopper is designed with flame pattern, the part of rein joint is designed with cloud pattern. According to XRF and XGT analysis of inlaid material, the content of silver is not more than 50%. The line inlay method making grooves on the surface of iron, then in laying a silver thread into them, and grinding the surface in a direction was adoptedin the manufacture of the iron bit.

  • This paper presents a current control strategy to reduce torque ripple of Brushless DC Motor in commutation period with PWM pattern. The torque ripple is mainly caused by the inequality in the rate of change between rising current and decaying one during commutation. And also it is influenced by the shape of real back EMF. Therefore, in the proposed control strategy, considering real back EMF a compensation voltage is generated to equalize the rate of change in these commutating currents. And then, by providing the compensation voltage in commutation period with PWM pattern, the torque ripple can be reduced. The simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed method can reduce the torque and the current ripples significantly.

  • We consider the object recognition of industrial tools which have one degree of freedom. In the case of pliers, the shape varies as the jaw angle varies. Thus, a feature vector made from the boundary image also varies along with the jaw angle. But a pattern recognizer should have the ability of classifying objects without any regards to the angle variation. For a pattern recognizer we have utilized a backpropagation neural net. Feature vectors were made from Fourier descriptors of boundary images by truncating the high frequency components, and they were used as inputs to the neural net for training and recognition. In our experiments, backpropagation neural net outperforms the minimum distance rule which is widely used in the pattern recognition. The performance comparison also made under noisy environments.

  • Crop minimization of the top and bottom ends of hot rolled plate, in a plate, in a plate mill, has been investigated. The existing model to determine the edging pattern at the finishing rolling pass was not reasonable to get high width accuracy and rolling yields. New models including width prediction have been formulated by using neural network model of back propagation learning algorithm and statistical analysis based on the actual production rolling data to give the optimal pattern for minimizing trimming loss. Using these models, at a given rolling condition of broadside pass and finishing pass and the permissible condition of width variation, it was possible to minimize crip at the top and bottom ends according to optimum procedure in plate mill. An application to improve the plan view pattern reduced width variation by 23% and crop length by 30% on average with an effective fishtail crop shape.
