Purpose: This study evaluated the effects of knowledge and attitude on confidence about patient safety management among emergency medical technician (EMT) students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 174 EMT students in two cities from May to June 2016. Data were analyzed using PASW WIN 20.0 for descriptive statistics, t-test, one way analysis of variance, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The students' confidence about patient safety management was 3.33 (on a 5-point scale). Confidence varied according to average academic grade (p=.015), experience in patient safety education, and experience in writing medical error reports. After adjusting for sex, average academic grade, and experience in patient safety education, knowledge and attitudes about patient safety increased a student's confidence in patient safety management by 19%. Conclusion: Patient safety education should be included in programs on health promotion and be provided as basic information in intervention programs for EMTs.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify tasks performed by patient safety personnel using importance-performance analysis. Methods: An online survey was conducted during a mandatory educational course. The questionnaire consisted of 43 items categorized into four subscales: management of patient safety accidents, education of healthcare personnel, education of patients and guardians, and patient safety activities. Importance-performance analysis was employed to ascertain the relationship between the importance and performance of tasks conducted by patient safety personnel. Results: A total of 145 patient safety personnel participated in the survey. The perceived importance of tasks by participants averaged 3.67 out of four, while the average performance was 3.40 out of four, indicating a significant difference (t=8.04, p<.001). Activities such as collecting patient safety reports, conducting root-cause analyses, and educating new employees were identified as low-performance tasks compared to their perceived importance. Conclusion: Tasks recognized as having low importance but high performance among patient safety personnel should be addressed through increased awareness and education. Analyzing the causes of tasks with low importance and performance is crucial for recognizing their importance and implementing improvement measures.
This study was conducted on 236 dental hygienists to find ways to improve patient education by identifying their concern in preventive care, their level of prevention management knowledge, and their impact on patient education by mediating their prevention-related knowledge. It was found that the prevention care concern, prevention knowledge and patient education of dental hygienists have a significant correlation, the higher the prevention care concern, the better the patient education, the better the prevention care knowledge, the better the prevention management knowledge, the better the patient education. The regression analysis and Sobel verification were conducted in order to identify a mediating effect of the preventive care knowledge on the influence that the level of concern on preventive dental care affects the patient education. Therefore, it was confirmed that the level of concern on preventive dental care has not only a direct effect and an indirect effect. Based on the results of this study, it is believed that the preventive education effect of patients will be even higher if institutional support is supported along with the attention of dental hygienists on preventive work and education for preventive knowledge content.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of preoperative patient controlled analgesia (PCA) education on total knee replacement arthroplasty (TKRA) patients' PCA usage, level of pain, the frequency of pro re nata (prn) administrations, number of ambulations/day and continuous passive motion (CPM) angle after TKRA. Methods: This research used the non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. Forty-five TKRA patients at a hospital in Seoul, Korea were included for in the study. For the experimental group, a 20-minute education session was provided a day before surgery. Data were analyzed using Windows SPSS Statistics 21.0 program. Results: Knowledge was higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p<.001). Incidence of nausea was lower in the experimental group (p=.01). No significant differences were found in post-operative pain scores, the frequency of prn analgesics administrations, dizziness, number of ambulations/day and CPM angle. Conclusion: This study showed that pre-operative PCA education could be an effective nursing intervention for increasing patient knowledge on PCA and nausea reduction after TKRA.
The hospital setting provides many opportunities for health promotion. There are many health professionals including physicians, nurses, medical technicians who have close contact with patients and their family. Health professionals are very influential to arouse the awareness about health and illness, and to motivate to change lifestyle among patients. Thus health professionals are most effective and important human resources for health education for patients to improve recovery rates and to promote health. In spite of the importance of health professionals' role in health promotion, the Korean government has provided little support for their health education for patients. Most of the health professionals have not learned about health education theories and skills, and have little attention to educate patients to change their lifestyle. Also the health professionals themselves have relatively poor lifestyle compared with advanced western countries. To improve health education for patients and their family, following strategies and policies should be considered: reinforcing curriculum for health education in college and training course, providing practical incentives for patient education, capacity building for health education and developing guideline for patient education, training health educators, networking and collaborating between community health center and hospitals, promoting the importance of health education among patients, researching and developing health education theory and practice including cost-benefit of health education.

Purpose: This study was done to assess nursing students' practice of patient safety management (PSM), identify factors affecting PSM and provide basic data to develop education programs to strengthen students' competencies for patient safety. Methods: In this descriptive research the practice of PSM by nursing students was examined and predictive factors were identified. Participants were junior and senior nursing students from 7 universities in 7 cities. Self-report questionnaires were used for data collection. Results: Significant positive correlations were found between knowledge of PSM, perception of the importance of PSM and practice of PSM. In multivariate analysis, women students, participation in patient safety education in school, knowledge of PSM, and practice of PSM predicted high perception of the importance of PSM. In multivariate analysis, senior year and participation in patient safety education in school predicted higher knowledge of PSM. In multivariate analysis, perception of the importance of PSM predicted high practice of PSM. Conclusion: In this study, knowledge was not found to directly affect PSM practice, but was found to affect the perception of the importance of PSM, a significant predictive variable. Thus, the importance of PSM should be strongly emphasized during education.

The average degree of impediment perceived by home care nurses was 2.82 out of 5. Conclusion: Medical institutions should develop educational materials and programs that reflect the characteristics and degree of home health care needed. Repeated research, including that by medical institutions, on the degree and impeding factors related to patient and family education performance of home health care nurses should be conducted. Moreover, medical institutions should investigate the nursing and educational needs of patients and families who received home health care service.
Background: Woosuk University College of Pharmacy delivered patient counseling education and administered Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) by utilizing standardized patients (SP) in Introductory Pharmacy Practice course. Surveys were conducted to examine students' perception of SP and its impact on experiential education. Methods: Students learned patient counseling by didactic lecture and role-play, followed by hands-on practice with SP. Then, patient counseling skills were assessed during OSCE by utilizing SP. The first survey was conducted immediately after OSCE, and the second survey after the completion of Pharmacy Practice Experiences (PPEs). Results: According to the surveys, majority of the students agreed that utilizing SP was effective in building confidence for conducting patient counseling, reflecting on strengths and weaknesses of communication skills, and preparing for PPEs. It was particularly more effective than role-play in simulating patient counseling in a real pharmacy and reflecting on oneself. Also, OSCE was an appropriate method to assess patient counseling skills and utilizing SP for this purpose was well-suited. Conclusion: Although it is very new in South Korea, other developed countries are already widely utilizing SP, and its importance and necessity have been proven by several studies. Therefore, Korean colleges of pharmacy should begin discussing how to utilize SP to improve students' communications skills and implementing OSCE to evaluate those skills.
