Purpose: This study aimed to explore the association of ${\beta}-catenin$ expression pattern with pathological response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer (BC) patients. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective exploratory study, data for 50 BC patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy were recorded. ${\beta}-catenin$ expression in tumours was assessed using immunohistochemistry and classified as either membranous or cytoplasmic according to the pattern of staining. Distributions of different clinico-pathological parameters according to ${\beta}-catenin$ expression were assessed using the Chi-square test. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess any relation of the pattern of ${\beta}-catenin$ expression with the pathological response. Results: Cytoplasmic ${\beta}-catenin$ expression was detected in 34% of BCs. Among our cases, 52% were hormonal receptor (HR)-positive, 24% were HER2-positive, 74% were clinical stage III and 74% received both anthracycline and taxane-based chemotherapy. Patients with cytoplasmic expression were more commonly younger than 40 years at diagnosis (cytoplasmic, 41.2% vs. no cytoplasmic expression, 12.1%, p=0.03). By doing t-test, cytoplasmic ${\beta}-catenin$ expression was linked with a higher body mass index compared to membranous-only expression ($mean{\pm}SD$$33.0{\pm}4.47$ vs. $29.6{\pm}6.01$, respectively, p=0.046). No significant associations were found between ${\beta}-catenin$ expression and other parameters such as HR and HER2 status, or clinical stage. Complete pathological response (pCR) rate was twice as great in patients with membranous expression but without statistical significance (membranous-only, 33.3% vs. cytoplasmic, 17.6%, OR= 2.3, 95% CI= 0.55-9.87, p=0.24). Conclusions: This study suggests that cytoplasmic ${\beta}-catenin$ expression may be linked with lower probability of achieving pCR after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. These data need to be validated in a larger cohort of patients.

Our aim was to test the hypothesis that preoperative serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) and -9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP-1) levels correlate with pathological features. Serum levels of MMP-7, and MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were determined in 90 bladder cancer patients and 40 healthy controls using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Preoperative serum MMP-7 and MMP-9 levels were significantly higher in cancer patients than control groups (p<0.001). In contast, serum TIMP-1 levels were lower (p<0.001). Alteration in MMP-7, and MMP-9, and TIMP-1 production may contribute to tumor angiogenesis and be associated with clinic-pathological features.
Speech material, which is collected from ARS(Automatic Response System), was analyzed and classified into disease and non-disease state. The material include 11 different kinds of diseases. Along with ARS speech, DAT(Digital Audio Tape) speech is collected in parallel to give the bench mark. To analyze speech material, analysis tools, which is developed local laboratory, are used to provide an improved and robust performance to the obtained parameters. To classify speech into disease and non-disease class, multi-layered neural network was used. Three different combinations of 3, 6, 12 parameters are tested to obtain the proper network size and to find the best performance. From the experiment, the classification rate of 92.5% was obtained.
The movement of human beings - walking, running, jumping and climbing, etc. - have long been of scientific interest. In particular, the science of human walking is called gait analysis. Various instruments have been developed to assist in the study of human gait. Recently gait analysis techniques are used in medical research to investigate the abnormalities of pathological gait. In this study, we constructed a comprehensive gait analysis system consisting of a walkway, a force platform, foot-switches and an ExpertVision motion analysis system. Time-distance gait parameters and vector diagrams can be analyzed by a special application program called Force Analysis System(FOANAS). Using quantitative discrimination of this system, the gait characteristic parameters of normal and pathological gait is facilitated.
The possibility of Galla Rhois(GR) water extract as an antithrombotic agent was investigated. The effect of GR on platelet aggregation in human platelet-rich plasma(PRP) induced by collagen and ADP in vitro and coagulation parameters in a pathological model induced by endotoxin and hydrocortisone acetate(HA) in vivo were examined. In platelet aggregation assay, GR extract significantly inhibited platelet aggregation induced by collagen and ADP in a dose-dependent manner. GR extract significantly increased the number of platelet and shortened prothrombin time(PT) and activated thromboplastin time(APTT) as compared with the control in pathological model induced by endotoxin and HA. Also, GR extract significantly increased fibrinogen level as compared with the control in a pathological model induced HA. These results suggest that GR may be a promising antithrombotic agent.
The subacute toxicity was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats orally treated with KDRD-010 at the doses of 0.056, 0.28, and 1.4 g/kg for one month. There were no clinical signs and pathological changes compared with control group. Body weights were not significantly changed between control and treatment groups. In hematological and biochemical serum parameters, all mean values appear to be within the normal range. In pathological examinations, hemorrhages of lung was observed in one male rat at low dose group and one female rat at high dose group of KDRD-010, but it was not considered to be caused by KDRD-010. These results suggest that KDRD-010 dose not induce any significant subacute oral toxicities in Sprague-Dawley rats.
In this paper we tried to classify the pathological voice signal with severe noise component based on two different parameters, the spectral slope and the ratio of energies in the harmonic and noise components (HNR), The spectral slope is obtained by using a curve fitting method and the HNR is computed in cepstrum quefrency domain. Speech data from normal peoples and patients are collected, diagnosed and divided into three different classes (normal, relatively less noisy and severely noisy data), The mean values and the standard deviations of the spectral slope and the HNR are computed and compared with in the three kinds of data to characterize and classify the severely noisy pathological voice signals from others.

Background: Expression of KRT13, FAIM2 and CYP2W1 appears to be influenced by risk habits, thus exploring the associations of these genes in oral squamous cell cancer (OSCC) with risk habits, clinico-pathological parameters and patient survival may be beneficial in identifying relevant biomarkers with different oncogenic pathways. Materials and Methods: cDNAs from 41 OSCC samples with and without risk habits were included in this study. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to analyze KRT13, FAIM2 and CYP2W1 in OSCC. The housekeeping gene (GAPDH) was used as an endogenous control. Results: Of the 41 OSCC samples, KRT13 was down-regulated in 40 samples (97.6%), while FAIM2 and CYP2W1 were down-regulated in 61.0% and 48.8%, respectively. Overall, there were no associations between KRT13, FAIM2 and CYP2W1 expression with risk habits, selected socio-demographic and clinico-pathological parameters and patient survival. Conclusions: Although this study was unable to show significance, there were some tendencies in the associations of KRT13, FAIM2 and CYP2W1 expression in OSCC with selected clinic-pathological parameters and survival.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of crude ginseng saponin (CGS) on clinical pathological parameters in adult female guinea pigs exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). A total of 80 guinea pigs (800$\pm$20 g) were divided into 8 groups: group 1 (normal control group) was given vehicle (com oil containing small amount of acetone and DMSO) and saline; group 2 (single TCDD-treated) received TCDD (1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.p.) and saline (i.p.); groups 3 and 4 were administered CGS at daily i.p. doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg for 4 weeks, respectively; groups 5 and 6 were administered CGS (10 and 20 mg/kg, respectively) for 5 weeks starting 1 week before TCDD-exposure; groups 7 and 8 were administered CGS (10 and 20 mg/kg, respectively) for 3 weeks from 1 week after TCDD-exposure. CGS was prepared by Diaion HP-20 adsorption chromatography. Body weight of G2 was significantly decreased from the 2nd week after TCDD-exposure (p<0.01). Body weights of the CGS-treated groups were also decreased by TCDD-exposure, but the weight loss was greatly retarded compared with that of G2. Increase in blood glucose, amylase, lipase, total cholesterol. triglyceride, AST and LDL-cholisterol levels by TCDD exposure was significantly attenuated by the CGS-treatment (p<0.05). From these results, we found that saponin the main active ingredient of ginseng, played a protective role against TCDD-induced toxicity in not only male but female guinea pigs.
