The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of paternal marital satisfaction and caregiving behavior on children's paternal representations. 112 preschoolers(67 boys and 45 girls, aged 4-5) and their fathers participated in this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling analysis. The results were as follows: firstly, paternal marital satisfaction had a direct effect on caregiving behaviors. Secondly, paternal caregiving behavior did not have a direct effect on children's paternal representations. Thirdly, paternal marital satisfaction had a direct effect on children's paternal representations. Fourthly, paternal caregiving behavior did not have a mediatory effect between paternal marital satisfaction and children's paternal representations. In conclusion, paternal marital satisfaction has influenced on caregiving behavior and children's paternal representations.
The purpose of this study was to identify the paternal role-behavior. Data were collected from questionnares with 270 fathers at the thirties-forties residing in Seoul. The data were analyzed with the SPSS WIN 7.0 package. The major findings were as follows: (1) The general trends of paternal role-behavior showed relatively high(mean=3.60) (2) Paternal role-behavior differed significantly according to their age education level occupation among the demograpic variables (3) Paternal role-behavior differed significantly according to age of oldest child number of sons number of daughters among the family-environmental variables. (4) Paternal role-behavior was correlated with the perceptions on this own father's ways of rearing marital satisfaction job satisfaction experience of bringing up child (5) The result of the regression analysis for the paternal role-behavior the seven variables most affected were as follows; father's role perception(β=3.6) age of oldest child (β= -1.9) experience of bringing up child(β=.19) perception on his own father's nurturance(β=.16) number of child(β=-.16) number of sons(β=-.13) level of income(β=.12)
Purpose. This study was conducted to compare the paternal rearing behavior and rearing stress level between fathers with a preschooler and fathers with school children so that it can be utilized as a basic source for developing parental rearing education programs. Methods. A descriptive comparative methods was conducted to identify the paternal rearing behavior and paternal rearing stress. Respondents were 361 fathers who had either preschoolers (n=189) or children of elementary age (n=l72). Results. Comparing the two group's means, the rearing activity score and rearing stress there were significant differences. In the school children's group's father, 'outdoor activity' and 'guidance on discipline activity' were significantly higher than the other group. In the preschool children's fathers group, 'play interaction activity' was statistically significant higher than the other, and the child-part mean score of paternal rearing stress was significantly higher than the other group. The correlation between paternal rearing behavior and paternal rearing stress, it can be shown that more paternal rearing behavior means less paternal rearing stress. Conclusion. These results of this study will help design rearing program for fathers that have either preschool children or school children by providing the basic data for paternal rearing behaviors and paternal rearing stress.
The purpose of this study was to examine the variables that influence paternal parenting behavior. 160 fathers of five-year old preschoolers(85 boys and 75 girls) were recruited from 8 daycare centers located in Seoul, Korea and answered the questionnaire on the subject of attachment experience with their parents of origin based on their retrospective memories, marital satisfaction, spouse's gatekeeping, and their own parenting behavior as fathers cohabiting with their children. Data were analyzed through frequencies, an independent sample t-test, Pearson's correlations, the stepwise regression analyses using SPSS 15.0. The findings are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in paternal parenting behavior according to children's gender. Second, marital satisfaction and attachment experience with their own mothers in childhood influenced all five subcategories of paternal parenting behavior(parental involvement, limit setting, responsiveness, reasoning guidance, intimacy) and spouse's gatekeeping influenced father's reasoning guidance and intimacy. Unexpectedly, attachment experience with their own father had no impact on any subcategories of paternal parenting behavior.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of marital conflicts perceived by fathers on preschoolers' behavior problems, and to investigate the mediating effect of paternal child rearing behavior. This study used survey data on 4 year-old infants which was conducted in 2012(5th year) by KICCE. Correlation analysis and structural equation were conducted using SPSS 23 and AMOS 23 for the data analysis, and the results of this study are as follows. First, marital conflicts perceived by fathers and preschoolers behavior problems showed a positive correlation, and they especially showed a greater positive correlation with offensive behavior, anxiety/depression, and other problems. On the other hand, it was identified that paternal child rearing behavior has a negative correlation with marital conflict and preschoolers' behavior problems when paternal child rearing behavior is compassionate and dominant. Secondly, it was identified that warm parenting behavior of fathers mediates the effect of marital conflicts on preschoolers' behavior problems. However, it was verified that the mediating effect of controlling parenting behavior is not significant. On the other hand, it was identified that the mediating effect of warm parenting behavior of fathers has a greater effect on internalized problems than external problems.
The purpose of this study is to determine paternal rearing behavior according to rearing characteristics and demographic characteristics. This study is designed as descriptive survey. This study's subjects are 200 people who live in Daegu, Gyeongbuk, Seoul and Gyeonggido and they have preschool children of 3-6years old. They live with their children together and they are bringing up their children with a spouse, and they agreed with this study. It was measured by the instrument that 3 nursing scholars modified for content validity based on 18 items which developed parental behavior questionnaire of Bigner(l977). The data were analyzed by the SPSS/PC program with descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA test. It was used Scheffe' test as post-hoc measurement. As a result of analysis is the following. 1. The results that are measured paternal rearing behavior by mean and standard deviation are that 'activity of play interaction' score was the highest($280{\pm}.59$), and then 'activity of daily living'($2.41{\pm}.58$), and then 'activity of discipline'($2.40{\pm}.93$). The lowest area was 'activity of outhouse'($225{\pm}.85$). As examined paternal rearing behaviors by item, 'express physical affection to children' was the highest and the next items is 'consult with wife about children's rearing problem.'. Item that was shown the lowest score was 'wash children's dress'. 2. Compared paternal rearing behaviors level by demographic characteristics, that showed Significant differences among the fathers job type(F=3.492, p=.005), family monthly income (p=2.011, p=.047), children's number(F=4.641, p=.011). 3. Compared paternal rearing behaviors level by rearing characteristics, that showed significant difference in the satisfaction of marred life (F=3.932, p=.021). In spite of Paternal rearing behavior can influence on children's health and health activity, that is apt to exclude in various family health educational program development and application in nursing field. Therefore, nursing researches about paternal rearing behavior will have to be needed to study in the future.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore whether there are gender differences in the influences of paternal parenting behavior on the relational aggression of adolescents and to examine the mediating effects of internal attribution and normative beliefs about aggressive behaviors. Methods: This study assessed 492 fifth to sixth graders from an elementary school (237 males and 255 females). Results: The results of this study were as follows: First, the effect of paternal affectionate parenting behavior on girls' reactive aggression was partially mediated by internal attribution. Second, the effect of paternal coercive parenting behavior on boys' proactive aggression was completely mediated by normative beliefs about aggressive behavior. Third, girls' proactive aggression was partially mediated by normative beliefs about aggressive behavior. Conclusion: These results suggest the need to further examine relational aggression and to help children gain positive relationships with peers.
The significance of father's parenting has been considered as a critical factor in facilitating growth and development and in promoting wellbeing of children. Pediatric nursing is a pertinent science to develop parenting roles, because it deals with knowledge and skills on growth and development and health of child. For this paper current studies were reviewed related to consequences to the family, content and factors influencing paternal parenting, and father's reactions to child rearing participation. Perspectives of future studies in pediatric nursing are summarized as follows. First, paternal parenting has to be studied more actively to contribute to family health and to meet the academic responsibility of pediatric nursing. Second, it is necessary to study the consequences to child's health and health behavior of paternal parenting. Also it is necessary to be concerned about fathers' reactions, like stress in parenting behavior, to understand the parenting father himself. Third, an objective measure of caregiving behavior (not self-reporting) is needed to determine whether the father is behaving appropriately. Further, experimental research has to be implemented to develop intervention programs for paternal parenting. It is hoped that the examination of these studies leads to develop of knowledge and practice in paternal parenting.
The purpose of this study was to test the mediation effect of marital communication with spouse between maternal gatekeeping and paternal parenting involvement. The participants were 210 fathers and their toddler children. The survey was rated by the fathers. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistic, Pearson's product-moment correlation and hierarchical multiple regression. The mediating effect was tested by Baron & Kenny's(1986) four steps. The results of this study were as follows: First, the maternal gatekeeping had a negative effect on the paternal parenting involvement. Second, the maternal gatekeeping consolidated the paternal permissiveness and non interventional child rearing behavior. The mediating effect of marital communication was significantly complete. The marital communication was key factor can help to increase paternal involvement and lead to paternal positive parenting behavior. The discussion included the suggestion for encouraging the paternal involvement and positive child rearing behavior.
The relationship between children's behavior problems and perceptions of their parents' childrearing behaviors was studied in 359 fourth graders. Children reported on perceptions of their parents' childrearing behaviors with the Childrearing Behavior Questionnaire (Park, 1995) and on their own behavior with the Korean Youth Self-Report (K-YSR; Oh, Lee, Hong, & Hah, 1997). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results showed that girls viewed their fathers and mothers as more warm/accepting and their fathers as less rejecting/restricting than boys. Boys had more externalizing (aggressive/delinquent) behavior problems than girls. Children's internalizing behavior problems were positively related to their perceptions of paternal and maternal rejection/restriction and permissive/non-interfering. The relationship was differed as a function of child's sex. Children's externalizing behavior problems were positively related to their perceptions of paternal and maternal rejection/restriction and paternal permissive/non-interfering. The relationship was differed as a function of child's sex.
