  • The systematic study of freshwater rotifers was conducted on the materials collected from 197 sites in South Korea. As a result, 9 species of Family Colurellidae were identified, 4 species ( 1 species and 3 subspeices) of which are new to the Korea fauna ; Courella uncinata uncinata, Squatinella rostrum rostrum, Lepadella patella patella, and L.elliptica. Total 165 species representing 13 families and 40 genera are now recorded by addign the species described in the present paper.

  • Comminuted fractures of the patella mostly occur at the inferior pole and require appropriate reduction and fixation to restore the extensor mechanism. Conventional methods such as tension-band wiring are not enough to gain proper fixation strength. Numerous methods have been reported, including circumferential cerclage wiring, osteosynthesis, and suture anchors depending on the fracture pattern. Herein, the author reports a relatively rare case of a comminuted fracture of the upper pole of the patella, for which we used augmented Krackow sutures in the quadriceps and fixation with tying of the suture limbs through patellar bone tunnels. Satisfactory results were obtained in terms of reduction and extensor mechanism recovery.

  • A transverse fracture is the most common type of displaced patella fracture requiring surgery. These fractures are commonly fixed with parallel Kirschner wires or screws that cross the fracture line, often with an additional tension band. Nevertheless, conventional fixation methods of patella fractures have prevalent complications caused by the protrusion of wires or pins. These complications necessitate additional surgery for hardware removal, increase medical cost, and can limit the function of the knee joint. This paper reports cases treated with a minimally invasive load-sharing percutaneous suture of the patella tendon. The procedure provides reliable fixation for transverse patella fractures, minimizes soft tissue injuries, preserves blood flow, and reduces postoperative pain. In addition, the procedure also reduces the irritation and pain caused by the internal fixture, thereby reducing the risk of restricted knee joint movement.

  • Five ciliate species of Euplotes were isolated from fresh and coastal water during a sampling survey to identify unrecorded ciliates in South Korea. Their morphology was investigated using live observation, protargol and "wet" silver nitrate staining methods. Brief descriptions and microphotographs of each species and a comparison with related species are provided. Euplotes focardii is characterized by an average size of 65×47 ㎛ after protargol impregnation, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-eurystomus type. Euplotes nobilii shows an average size of 34×20 ㎛ after protargol staining, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-patella type. Euplotes octocarinatus, the only freshwater species described in the present study, is characterized by an average size of 66×46 ㎛ after protargol impregnation, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-patella type. Euplotes petzi has an average size of 43×30 ㎛ after protargol staining, a macronucleus hook-shaped and dorsal argyrome pattern in double-patella type. Euplotes raikovi is characterized by an average size of 40×24 ㎛ after protargol staining, 6 dorsal and 3 ventral ridges and dorsal argyrome pattern of double-patella type.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of patellar height on quadriceps muscles' electromyography (EMG) activity during a squat exercise in adults with patella baja. For the study, we recruited 15 volunteers who had patella baja on the right side. We measured the EMG activity of the right rectus femoris, vastus medialis oblique, and vastus lateralis muscles during squat exercises under two conditions, specifically with and without an infra-patellar strap. The infra-patellar strap was applied below the tested patella to elevate the patella to a normal height. A paired t-test was used to compare the effects of patella height on EMG activity of the quadriceps muscles. The EMG activity of the rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis oblique (VMO), and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles were significantly decreased during the squat exercise with the infra-patellar strap compared to the same exercise without the infra-patellar strap (p<.05), while the VMO/VL ratio was not different significantly between two conditions (p>.05). The findings of this study suggest that an infra-patellar strap may benefit people with patellar baja, as changes in patellar height could improve the efficiency of the quadriceps muscles.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an exercise program with patella mobilization on range of motion, muscle strength, and gait in patients with total knee arthroplasty. Methods : Thirty patients under the age of 65 who visited the T hospital in Daegu Metropolitan City and underwent total knee arthroplasty surgery were selected for this study. Fifteen patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group and took part in an exercise program with patella mobilization, and fifteen patients were randomly assigned to the control group and took part in just the exercise program. Each group took part in their intervention three times a week for four weeks. The measurement tools used included a goniometer, handheld dynamometer, and 10-meter walking test. In the statistical analysis results, to compare the about pre and post test differences within each group, a paried t-test was used, and to compare the differences between each group, an independent t-test was used. Results : There was a significant difference (p<.05) in the range of motion, muscle strength of the quadriceps femoris and, hamstrings, and 10-meter walking test within each individual group and between the two groups before and after the intervention (p<.05). Conclusion : All the results for the experimental group were significant. Therefore, it is expected that an exercise program with patella mobilization will be helpful for the recovery of the knee joint in patients who have undergone total knee arthroplasty.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical therapy intervention with local vibration on the physical function of patients with traumatic patella fractures. Methods: This study recruited 6 subjects who had suffered traumatic patella fractures. The study was conducted for an average of 12.8 weeks. Before the treatment (2 weeks post-surgery), they were evaluated using the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), the Korean-version of the impact of event scale-revised (IES-R-K), pressure pain threshold (PPT), range of motion (ROM) of the knee joint, and the Korean knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (K-KOOS) and were reevaluated after 7 and 12 weeks, post-surgery. This study was conducted according to ORIF Patella Fracture Post-Operative Rehabilitation Protocol after applying local vibration. The protocol consists of Phases 1~5 and this study has been applied from phase 2. Results: A comparison of the performance of the participants before and after the intervention showed a decrease in NPRS (9.83±.41→4.83±.98), IES-R-K (68.67±2.73→23.83±2.40), and K-KOOS (Function, Daily living: 70.5±5.96→34.0±3.35, Function, Sports and Recreational activities: 22.83±2.32→10.77±1.37, Quality of Life: 19.33±7.33→7.33±.52) scores. And the ROM (Knee flexion: 30.0±4.47°→128.73±3.6°, Knee extension: -6.83±2.48°→-1.33±1.03°) and PPT (9.67±.52kg/cm2→22.44±2.33kg/cm2) scores increased. Conclusion: These results show that physical intervention with local vibration using a Blackroll® booster and head can help to improve pain, physical function, and psychological status. Also, it was possible to select interventions depending on the patient's condition and the desired goal, using physical intervention with the Blackroll® booster technique.

  • Until the up to day, we have known that a tight iliotibial tract has an influence on the patella, pulling it laterally and causing pain in patients with patellofemoral syndrome, so should be stretched as a part of physical therapy. But the iliotibial tract's function on the patella in subjects with PFS has not yet been proved and further questions need to be answered regarding the evlauation or treatment of a tight tract in patients with PFS.
