Satellites with flexible lightweight solar panels are sensitive to vibration that is caused by internal actuators such as reaction or momentum wheels which are used to control the attitude of the satellite. Any infinitesimal amount of unbalance in the reaction wheels rotors will impose a harmonic excitation which may interact with the solar panels structure. Therefore, quenching the solar panel's vibration is of a practical importance. In the present work, the panels are modeled as laminated composite beam using first-order shear deformation laminated plate theory which accounts for rotational inertia as well as shear deformation effects. The vibration suppression is achieved by bonding patches of piezoelectric material with suitable dimensions at selected locations along the panel. These patches are actuated by driving control voltages. The governing equations for the system are formulated and the dynamic Green's functions are used to present an exact yet simple solution for the problem. A guide lines is proposed for determining the values of the driving voltage in order to suppress the induced vibration.

In this pilot dual-site study with LifeWave IceWave$^{(R)}$ patches, using subjects as their own controls, data were acquired from a convenience sample of 16 males and 24 females, 50% Caucasian-Americans, 50% Hispanic-Americans, ages 20 - 85 with neuromuscular pain. The hypothesis was: the application of IceWave$^{(R)}$ patches to the skin will reduce one's perception of pain. Subjects were tested at baseline (without any patches), and then at 1 and 3 h on day 1 and at 1 h on days 2 - 5 after patch application. At every time point, the mean change, indicative of one's perception of pain, was highly significantly (p < 0.0001) reduced, with a statistical power of 100% compared to baseline. Based on these findings, the hypothesis was accepted as true.
This study introduces the three-dimensional information about moving objects. Relative motion between textured objects and observer generates a time varying optic array at the image, from which image motion of contours can be extracted. Closed-form solutions are proposed for the structure and motion of planar and curved surface patches. The analytic solution for curved surface patches combines the transformation of Longuet-Higgins with the planar surface solution of Subbarao and Waxman. Ovoid patches are shown to construct a unique transform angle. Thus, ovoid patches almost always yield a unique 3D interpretation.
This paper deals with the experimental validation of the use of PVDF Patches for the assessment of spatial derivatives of displacement field. It focuses more exactly on the shear Force Identification by using Specific forms of PVDF patcHes (FISH) on beams. An overview of the theoretical approach is exposed. The principle is based on the use of the weak form of the equation of motion of the beam which allows the shear forces to be extracted at one edge of the sensor when this last has a specific form. The experimental validation is carried out with a cantilever steel beam, excited by a shaker at its free boundary. The validation consists in comparing the shear force measured by the designed sensor glued at the free edge and the directly measured force applied by the shaker. The sensor is made of two patches, called the "stiffness" patch and the "mass" patch. The use of both patches allows one to identify correctly the shear force on a large frequency domain. The use of only the stiffness patch is valid in the low frequency domain and has the advantage to have a frequency-independent gain that allows its use in real time.
Ball rolling blending is a popular technique for blending between parametric surfaces. The ball rolling blend surface is conceptually a trajectory of a ball rolling between two base sufaces. It is constructed by sweeping a circular arc along a ball contact curve pair. Since a ball rolling blend surfaces does not have a polynomial form like a Bezier surface patch, it is impossible to apply this method directly to a commercial CAD/CAM system. In this paper an algorithm is developed to approximate a ball rolling blend surface into Bezier surface patches. Least square method is applied to obtain proper Bezier surface patches under a given tolerance. The Bezier surface patches have degree three or more and guarantee VC1-continuity.
In order to develop catechin patches for skin regeneration at wound sites, patches with varying concentrations of catechin and chitosan were manufactured. An optimal composition ratio was determined by adjusting the drug release rate and amount, to maximize efficiency. The catechin used in this study was extracted from green tea leaves using a solvent/ultrasonication method, and its characteristics were confirmed through Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses. Patches were prepared with different concentrations of catechin and chitosan, and various properties were analyzed using techniques such as FT-IR, water contact angle analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was observed that as the chitosan concentration increased, the release of catechin slowed down or almost ceased. A patch manufactured with 1.5 mg/cm2 of catechin at a 1 % chitosan concentration exhibited a high initial release rate over 24 h and demonstrated cellular biocompatibility. Consequently, these patches, with tailored release characteristics based on the concentrations of chitosan and catechin, hold promise for use as drug delivery systems in wound healing applications.
The effects of sheep urine and dung patches on methane ($CH_4$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) fluxes were investigated during the summer-autumn in 2010, to evaluate their contribution to climate change in a desert grassland in Inner Mongolia, China. Results indicate that the cumulative $CH_4$ emissions for dung patches, urine patches and control plots were -0.076, -0.084, and -0.114 g/$m^2$ and these were net $CH_4$ sinks during the measured period. The level of $CH_4$ intake from urine and dung plots decreased 25.7%, and 33.3%, respectively, compared with a control plot. $CO_2$ fluxes differed (p<0.01) in urine plots, with an average of 569.20 mg/$m^2$/h compared with control plots (357.62 mg/$m^2$/h) across all sampling days. Dung patches have cumulative $CO_2$ emissions that were 15.9% higher compared with the control during the 55-d period. Overall, sheep excrement weakened $CH_4$ intake and increased $CO_2$ emissions.
Various release test methods have been applied for the evaluation of nicotine release in vitro from commercial patches. However, whether and how the release data reflect the permeation of nicotine across the skin, is not fully elucidated. To predict in vivo bioavailability from in vitro release tests, correlation between in vitro release and in vitro skin permeation was assessed in the present study. Release of nicotine from three commercial patches was measured for 24 hours under nine experimental conditions which were classified depending on the apparatus (i.e., paddle over disk, cylinder and reciprocating holder) and dissolution media (i.e., phosphate buffer pH 7.4, water and the 1 % phosphoric acid pH 1.5). In vitro permeation of nicotine from the patches across the human cadaver skin was also measured using a diffusion cell. The release of nicotine was better explained by the Higuchi's equation rather than by the first order rate equation. Correlation between the release rate and the in vitro skin permeation differed among the patches. However, in general, the cylinder method, in which water is used as a dissolution medium, showed the highest correlation among the nine release test conditions.
