  • Two realigation procedures of any open-circuit transfer functions are presented through the use of genera1ized immitance converters composed of two operational amplifiers and passive elements. The fast precedure is to select the admittance conversion, h(s), to be k/s , and the second one to be k/s. The merit of the second procedure is the elimination of capacitors in passive networks, however, requires more CGIC's than the first. The second-order transfer function is realiged in the two methods under discussion to find that the sensitivity of Q factor and the undamped oscillation frequency to the variation of circuit elements. The first procedure proved to be favorable from the view point of sensitivities.

  • The transfer of cupric sulfate across the rat small intestine in vitro was studied by perfusion method using the segments of everted rat small intestine. Copper transport was approximately propotional to the metal concentration in the mucosal solution and no difference was observed in the metal transport among rat duodenum, jejunum and ileum. It was suggested from these results that copper transport across the rat small intestine would occur by passive diffusion. The effect of various chelating agents on copper transport across the rat small intestine n vitro and its uptake by the intestine were also studied. Copper transport was greatly enhanced in the presence of EDTA and NTA. Copper uptake decreased to a greater extent in the presence of EPTA and NTA.

  • A condensation heat transfer model is essential to accurately predict the performance of the passive containment cooling system (PCCS) during an accident in an advanced light water reactor. However, most of existing models tend to predict condensation heat transfer very well for a specific range of thermal-hydraulic conditions. In this study, a new correlation for condensation heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is presented using machine learning technique. To secure sufficient training data, a large number of pseudo data were produced by using ten existing condensation models. Then, a neural network model was developed, consisting of a fully connected layer and a convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm, DenseNet. Based on the hold-out cross-validation, the neural network was trained and validated against the pseudo data. Thereafter, it was evaluated using the experimental data, which were not used for training. The machine learning model predicted better results than the existing models. It was also confirmed through a parametric study that the machine learning model presents continuous and physical HTCs for various thermal-hydraulic conditions. By reflecting the effects of individual variables obtained from the parametric analysis, a new correlation was proposed. It yielded better results for almost all experimental conditions than the ten existing models.

  • This study analyzed the performance of passive solar system for office building. A unit model of the passive solar system was proposed in order to predict its performance under varying parameters and Seoul weather date. Steady state heat transfer equations were set up using a energy balanced equations and solved using a inverse matrix method. Numerical simulation program to analyze system was developed by using MATLAB. As the results, the passive solar system performance of office building was determined by the insolation and the outdoor air temperature. Also the passive solar system indicate 6.7~16.2% of annual average efficiency. In the comparison with other systems of the conventional wall, mass wall could reduce the heating loads of 7.1% and trombe wall could reduce heating loads of 11.5%. Through this study, performance of passive solar system for office building was verified by numerical method. Consequently, the passive solar system could operate an important role as the alternative for saving energy consumption of office building, and the additional studies should be made through the experimental method for the commercialization.

  • Extensive researches have been carried out for enhancing the safety of nuclear power plants and, especially, the development of passive cooling systems, such as passive containment cooling system (PCCS) and passive residual heat removal system, is increasingly important, where condensation is a crucial heat transfer mechanism. Recently, Ahn & Yun et al. developed a horizontal in-tube condensation heat transfer model as one of the activities for the PCCS development. In this work, we implemented the Ahn & Yun 's condensation heat transfer model into the MARS code and assessed it using the PASCAL experimental data. Based on the results of the assessment, we identified the limitations of the Ahn & Yun 's model and suggested a modified Ahn & Yun 's model, and assessed the model using various experimental data.

  • Purpose: The second toe PIP joint free flap is a method of reconstruction used for abnormalities of the PIP joint of the finger. We report the results of the additional tenolysis in patients with a difference between passive ROM and active ROM after second toe PIP joint free flap. Methods: From March 2001 to July 2008, tenolysis was performed in patients with a difference in their active and passive ROM after second toe PIP joint free transfer, performed on 14 fingers. We performed a retrospective analysis of the medical records, noting the clinical and radiological findings. In addition, we measured the preoperative and postoperative range of motion of the PIP joint. Results: The average active ROM was $22.5^{\circ}$ at the three months after the joint transfer surgery, and was $38^{\circ}$ after additional tenolysis between five months and twelve months after the joint transfer. Conclusions: Additional tenolysis, after the second toe PIP joint free flap, might be a good option for improved results in patients with difference in active and passive ROM of a transferred PIP joint.

  • The decay heat that is produced by nuclear reactor spent fuel must be cooled in a spent fuel storage pool. A wickless heat pipe or a vertical two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) is used to remove this decay heat. The objective of this research is to investigate the thermal performance of a prototype model for a large-scale vertical TPCT as a passive cooling system for a nuclear research reactor spent fuel storage pool. An experimental investigation and numerical simulation using RELAP5/MOD 3.2 were used to investigate the TPCT thermal performance. The effects of the initial pressure, filling ratio, and heat load were analyzed. Demineralized water was used as the TPCT working fluid. The cooled water was circulated in the water jacket as a cooling system. The experimental results show that the best thermal performance was obtained at a thermal resistance of $0.22^{\circ}C/W$, the lowest initial pressure, a filling ratio of 60%, and a high evaporator heat load. The simulation model that was experimentally validated showed a pattern and trend line similar to those of the experiment and can be used to predict the heat transfer phenomena of TPCT with varying inputs.

  • Since the TMI and Chernobyl accidents, many passive safety features are suggested in advanced reactors in order to enhance the safety in future nuclear power plants. In order to verify the effectiveness and provide the data for detailed design of passive cooling system, in the present work, the effects of air inlet position and external condition on the natural circulated air flow rate and the natural and forced convective heat transfer coefficient have been investigated for the one-side heated closed path such as the passive containment cooling system of the Westinghouse's AP-600. A series of experiments have been peformed with the 1/26th scaled segment type test facility of the AP-600 passive containment. Under natural and forced convection, the air velocities and temperatures are measured at several points of the air flow path. The experimental result are compared with a simple one-dimensional model and it shows a good agreement.

  • The method of the reducing duct noise can be classified by passive and active control techniques. However, passive control has a limited effect of noise reduction at low frequencies (below 500Hz) and is limited by the space. On the other hand, active control can overcome these passive control limitations. The active control technique mostly uses the Least-Mean-Square (LMS) algorithm, because the LMS algorithm can easily obtain the complex transfer function in real-time particularly when the Filtered-X LMS (FXLMS) algorithm is applied to an active noise control (ANC) system. However, the convergence performance of the LMS algorithm decreases slightly so it may delay the convergence time when the FXLMS algorithm is applied to the active control of duct noise. Thus the Co-FXLMS algorithm was developed to improve the control performance in order to solve this problem. The Co-FXLMS algorithm is realized by using an estimate of the cross correlation between the adaptation error and the filtered input signal to control the step size. In this paper, the performance of the Co-FXLMS algorithm is presented in comparison with the FXLMS algorithm. Simulation results show that active noise control using Co-FXLMS is effective in reducing duct noise.

  • To improve safety analysis technology for a nuclear reactor containment considering an interaction between a reactor coolant system (RCS) and containment, this study aims at an experimental investigation on the integrated simulation of the RCS and containment, with an integral effect test facility, ATLAS-CUBE. For a realistic simulation of a pressure and temperature (P/T) transient, the containment simulation vessel was designed to preserve a volumetric scale equivalently to the RCS volume scale of ATLAS. Three test cases for a steam line break (SLB) transient were conducted with variation of the initial condition of the passive heat sink or the steam flow direction. The test results indicated a stratified behavior of the steam-gas mixture in the containment following a high-temperature steam injection in prior to the spray injection. The test case with a reduced heat transfer on the passive heat sink showed a faster increase of the P/T inside the containment. The effect of the steam flow direction was also investigated with respect to a multi-dimensional distribution of the local heat transfer on the passive heat sink. The integral effect test data obtained in this study will contribute to validating the evaluation methodology for mass and energy (M/E) and P/T transient of the containment.
