  • In this paper, we propose a strategy to improve fault-tolerance and scalability of replicated services in mobile agent systems by applying an appropriate passive replication protocol for each replicated service according to whether the service is deterministic or non-deterministic. For this purpose, two passive replication protocols, PRPNS and PRPDS, are designed for non-deterministic and deterministic services respectively. They both allow visiting mobile agents to be forwarded to and execute their tasks on any node performing a service agent, not necessarily the primary agent. Especially, in the protocol PRPDS, after a backup service agent has received each mobile agent request and obtained its delivery sequence number from the primary service agent, the backup is responsible for processing the request and coordinating with the other replica service agents. Therefore, our strategy using the two proposed protocols can promise high scalability of replicated services a large number of mobile agents attempt to access in mobile agent systems. Our simulation results show that the proposed strategy performs much better than the one using only the traditional passive replication protocol.

  • This paper presents a partially decentralized passive replication algorithm for deterministic servers in message-passing distributed systems. The algorithm allows any backup server, not necessarily the primary server, to take responsibility for processing its received client request and coordinating with the other replica servers after obtaining the delivery sequence number of the request from the primary. Thanks to thus desirable feature, the algorithm with conventional load balancing techniques can efficiently avoid extreme load conditions on the primary. Therefore, it can provide better scalability of deterministic and replicated sewer systems than traditional passive replication algorithms. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can reduce $16.5\%{\~}52.3\%$ of the average response time of a client request compared with the traditional ones.

  • Perpendicular patterned magnetic media have been regarded as a prime candidate to achieve an ultra-high magnetic recording density of over 1 Tera-bits/$inch^2$. Patterned magnetic media with nanoscale patterns have been fabricated using various nanopatterning technologies. We focused on the two technical issues of nanoinjection molding technology. Firstly, we have investigated a cost-effective method to fabricate metallic stamps. Secondly, we focused on the analysis of nanoinjection molding with passive heating, where the replication of 50 nm nanopillar arrays was successful. The effect of the thermal insulation layer on the replication quality was examined by analytical and experimental methods. Finally, we deposited a magnetic layer on a injection molded nanopillars and measured. Our methodology can provide cost-effective mass-production for patterned magnetic media.

  • This paper addresses the issue involved in dependability of distributed mobile agents in the Internet environment. We propose an architectural framework for the Internet applications making mobile agents into fault-tolerant. The replication of agents and data is of great importance to achieve fault tolerance in distributed systems over the Internet. This research focuses on the replication component for the proposed fault-tolerant mobile agent framework. We present and analyze the performance results obtained when doing simulation study on the effects of the degree of replication, the active and passive replication strategies, and the replication scale.

  • In past few years, distributed hash table (DHT)-based P2P systems have been proven to be a promising way to manage decentralized index information and provide efficient lookup services. However, the skewness of users' preferences regarding keywords contained in a multi-keyword query causes a query load imbalance that combines both routing and response load. This imbalance means long file retrieval latency that negatively influences the overall system performance. Although index replication has a great potential for alleviating this problem, existing schemes did not explicitly address it or incurred high cost. To overcome this issue, we propose, in this paper, an integrated solution that consists of three replication schemes to alleviate query load imbalance while minimizing the cost. The first scheme is an active index replication that is used in order to decrease routing load in the system and to distribute response load of an index among peers that store replicas of the index. The second scheme is a proactive pointer replication that places location information of each index to a predetermined number of peers for reducing maintenance cost between the index and its replicas. The third scheme is a passive index replication that guarantees the maximum query load of peers. The result of simulations indicates that the proposed schemes can help alleviate the query load imbalance of peers. Moreover, it was found by comparison that our schemes are more cost-effective on placing replicas than PCache and EAD.

  • The failure of network and/or node on which server object is executed is a single point of system failure in the CORBA application. One of the possible ways to overcome such problem is to replicate server objects to several independent nodes. The replicated objects executing same tasks are called object group. In order to provide fault tolerance of server object, this paper proposes and implements new CORBA model that supports the object group based on active replication. The proposed model not only provides interoperability with existing CORBA application but also minimizes additional application interface required to support object group because it uses nop to exchange messages between client and server. And this paper extends IDL structure. Depending to application logic, it makes possible to prevent performance degradation caused by consistency maintenance. At present, this paper supports only active replication. But it can be easily extended to provide warm ancVor cold passive replication without modification of architecture required for active replication.

  • Most mobile agents are migrated to many mobile agent systems by the sequential node migration method. However. in this case, if some problems such as host's fault or obstacle etc. happened, mobile agent falls infinity walt or orphan states. Therefore, it is difficult to get an expectation effect as use of other distribution technologies because the required time for networking between nodes increases. And so, many researches have been performed to solve this problems. However, most of methods decide node migration based on passive routing table or detour hosts which have some problems. Actually, the researches for reducing the total required time for networking are insufficient yet. In this paper, to reduce the required time for networking of mobile agent we design an active routing table based on the information of implemented objects which are registered in the meta-table of naming agent. And also, for user's keyword, we propose an replication model that replicates many agent object according to the information and number of object references corresponding to meta-table. Replicated objects are migrated to mobile agent systems in parallel and it provides minimized required time for networking.

  • Background: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), known to latently infect the host's trigeminal ganglion, can lead to severe herpes encephalitis or asymptomatic infection, potentially contributing to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. The virus generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that significantly impact viral replication and induce chronic inflammation through NF-κB activation. Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), an oxidative stress regulator, can prevent and treat HSV-1 infection by activating the passive defense response in the early stages of infection. Methods and results: Our study investigated the antiviral effects of ginsenoside Rg5, an Nrf2 activator, on HSV-1 replication and several host cell signaling pathways. We found that HSV-1 infection inhibited Nrf2 activity in host cells, induced ROS/NF-κB signaling, and triggered inflammatory cytokines. However, treatment with ginsenoside Rg5 inhibited ROS/NF-κB signaling and reduced inflammatory cytokines through NRF2 induction. Interestingly, the Nrf2 inhibitor ML385 suppressed the expression of NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1(NQO1) and enhanced the expression of KEAP1 in HSV-1 infected cells. This led to the reversal of VP16 expression inhibition, a protein factor associated with HSV-1 infection, thereby promoting HSV-1 replication. Conclusion: These findings suggest for the first time that ginsenoside Rg5 may serve as an antiviral against HSV-1 infection and could be a novel therapeutic agent for HSV-1-induced neuroinflammation.

  • The nano imprint process is one of the next generation lithography has been mentioned as one of major nanoreplication techniques because it is simple process, low cost, high replication fidelity and relatively high throughput. This process requires a surface contact between a template with patterns and a wafer on a stage. After contact, the vertical moving the template to the wafer causes some directional motions of the stage. Thus the stage must move according to the motions of the template to avoid the damage of the transferred patterns on the wafer. This study is to develop the wafer stage with a passive compliance to overcome the damage. This stage is designed with the concept like that it has a monolithic, symmetry and planar 6-DOF mechanism.

  • An A-B-A-C single subject research design was used to assess the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) and inhibitive techniques on spasticity in a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. Stimulation electrodes were placed over the sural nerve of the right leg. The standard method of cutaneous stimulation, TENS with impulse frequency of 100 Hz, was applied. Inhibitive techniques including stretch, antagonist contraction, and weight bearing were used. The tonus of the leg muscle was measured by means of a surface-EMG biofeedback unit. Visual analysis of data indicate that the child showed clinically significant reduction of spasticity in passive ankle movement following 30 minutes of TENS and inhibitive techniques application, respectively. The effect of TENS on spasticity inhibition was similar to that of inhibitive techniques. This result suggests that for this child with cerebral palsy, the application of TENS to the sural nerve may induce short-term post-stimulation inhibitory effects on the spasticity of cerebral palsy. Replication of this study with a more complex single-subject design involving more subjects is recommended to confirm this result.
