  • The particle size of medicinal materials is an Important physical property that affects the phar-maceutical behaviors such as dissolution, chemical stability, and bioavailability of solid dosage forms. The size reduction of raw medicinal powder is needed to formulate insoluble drugs or slightly soluble medicines and to improve the pharmaceutical properties such as the solubility, the pharmaceutical mixing, and the dispersion. The objective of the present study is to evaluate physiological activity of amorphous and nano-particle prep-arations of insoluble drug, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), which were made by three types of fine grinding mills. The change of physical properties of ground UDCA was conformed by Mastersiger microplus and X-ray diffraction. We have investigated hepatoprotective effects of the nano-particle preparations of UDCA by plan-etary mill, vibration rod mill and jet mill in $CCI_4$-induced oxidatively injured mouse liver. The results showed that nano-particle preparations of UDCA all decreased reactive oxygen sepecies generation and lipid peroxi-dation in $CCI_4$-induced oxidative stress mice. Among them, nano-particle preparations by vibration rod mill and jet mill showed more significantly hepatoprotective effects compared to intact UDCA and planetary mill-ground UDCA. These results suggest that ground UDCA with vibration rod mill and jet mill shows a high amorphous state and the improved dissolution.

  • We evaluated the effect of particle size and associated dynamics on a hydrocyclone separation process in order to understand the movement of the particle trajectories inside the hydrocyclone via numerical analysis, with particles of acid hydrolysis residues discharged in $TiO_2$ production via the sulfate method as a case study. The values obtained from the numerical simulation were successfully compared with those from experimental tests in the literature, allowing a description of the dynamics of the particles, their acting forces, and their relevant properties together with separation efficiency. The results showed that particle motion is jointly controlled by the drag force, the pressure gradient force and the centrifugal force. With increasing particle size, the influence of the drag force is weakened, whereas that of the centrifugal force and pressure gradient is strengthened. Factors including particle density, slurry viscosity, and inlet slurry flow rate also contribute to a clear and useful understanding of particle motion behavior in the hydrocyclone as a method for improving the separation efficiency.

  • Inorganic-organic hybrid material such as vinyl-nano sized silica ball was synthesized by acrylo-alkoxysilane and nano silica ball with different particle size. And then they were formulated into acrylic-melamine clearcoat. This material is fully characterized with various analytical methods and applied for strength measurement. The glossy effect, matting effect and anti-scratching properties of materials were investigated for further growth and maintenance. When the particle size of nano silica ball is 20~30 nm, the glossy retain effect was increased by 7% compared to bare acrylic-melamine clearcoat. When a commercially available silica Aerosil 200 (Hydrophilic fumed silica, average particle size 12 nm, Degussa) react with vinyl alkoxysilane vinyl-fumed silica complex form. The vinyl-fumed silica along with clearcoat increases only 2% increase at glossy retain. Nano-scratch test results also support the glossy retain effect of vinyl nano-sized silica ball in clearcoat.

  • This research was performed to evaluate the extraction characteristics of heavy metals for soil washing of mine tailings-contaminated soil according to particle size distribution and the chemical distributional existence of the metals. As the soil particle size was decreased, the extracted concentrations of heavy metals was increased except Fe and Mn. Most of all heavy metals were extracted within 6 h by soil washing with 0.05 M EDTA. Extraction efficiency of metals was decreased for Pb, Cu, and Zn with decreasing of particle size. Significant difference was not observed in extraction efficiency for Cd according to particle size distribution. Extraction efficiency for Cd was the highest as 86~91%, while the lowest as 5~14% for Fe. Most metals of the soil without soil washing was distributed as reducible, oxidizable, and residual fractions. Pb, Zn, and Cd existed as reducible (Fe/Mn oxide) and residual fractions and Cu existed as oxidizable and residual fractions after soil washing treatment with 0.05 M EDTA. As the soil particle size was decreased, residual fraction was increased for Pb and Cu. About 90% of reducible fraction in Pb, Zn, and Cd was removed by soil washing with 0.05 M EDTA. As the results, it was founded that soil particle size was the important parameter to effect on distributional fraction and extraction efficiency of metals in mine tailings-contaminated soil.

  • For pearl pigments used for splendor or gloss effect of make-up products, especiallv point make-up products like eye-shadow and blusher, we studied the variation of particle size distribution by the grinding time and by the binder used as a binding agent. In this study. high speed mixer was used and the particle sire distribution was measured by using the light scattering method. In case of pearl pigments, its median diameter of $5{\;}{\mu}m$, the particle size was reduced to 4.6 um when it was ground for 120 s. When it was applied for the pearl pigment of $45{\;}{\mu}m$, the particle size was reduced to $27{\;}{\mu}m$. We confirmed that the latter was reduced more largely and the original gloss was reduced too. For the binder, we studied the correlation between particle size of raw material and grinding time. We also investigated the effects of the binder contents on the variation of particle size distribution of products by aggregation of particles.

  • Purpose: Surface damage and bonding strength difference after micromechanical treatment of zirconia surface are to be studied yet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the difference of fracture resistance and bonding strength between more surface-damaged group from higher air-blasting particle size and pressure, and less damaged group. Materials and Methods: Disk shape zirconia ($LAVA^{TM}$) was sintered and air-blasted with $30{\mu}m$ particle size (Cojet), under 2.8 bar for 15 seconds, $110{\mu}m$ particle size (Rocatec), under 2.8 bar for 15 seconds, and $110{\mu}m$ particle size (Rocatec), under 3.8 bar for 30 seconds respectively. Biaxial flexure test and bonding failure load test were performed serially (n = 10 per group). For bonding test, specimens were bonded on the base material having similar modulus of elasticity of dentin with $200{\mu}m$-thick resin cement for tension of surface damage. Failure load of bonding was detected with acoustic emission (AE) sensor. Results: There were no significant differences both in the biaxial flexure test and bonding failure load test between groups (P > 0.05). Sub-surface cracks were all radial cracks except for two specimens. Conclusion: Within the limitations of no aging under monotonic load test, surface damage from higher air-blasting particle size and pressure was not significant. Evaluations of failure load with bonded zirconia disks was clinically relevant modality for surface damage and bonding strength, simultaneously.

  • The thermal conductivities of nano-sized fumed silica-based insulation media were investigated by varying a mean particle size of the silicon carbide opacifiers and ceramic fiber content. Opacifying effect of ceramic fiber and silicon carbide powders was discussed in terms of their content and the mean particle size of them. As the fiber contents increased from 10 wt% to 30 wt% in a material, its thermal conductivity at temperatures of about $620^{\circ}C$ decreased from 0.171 $Wm^{-1}K^{-1}$ to 0.121 $Wm^{-1}K^{-1}$. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity at temperatures of about $625^{\circ}C$ decreased from 0.128 $Wm^{-1}K^{-1}$ to 0.092 $Wm^{-l}K^{-1}$ as the mean SiC particle size decreased from $31{\mu}m$ to $10{\mu}m$.

  • The objective of this paper was to investigate the effect of dextran gel on preparation of nano-liposomes loaded with ginkgolide. During preparation, Sephadex G75, G50 and G25 were added in the aqueous phase respectively. From the experiment, nano-liposomes prepared by dextran gels were found spherical and smooth. The result indicated that aperture of dextran gels were narrower, particle size of nano-liposomes was smaller (207.13 ~ 89.16 nm) and zeta potential was greater (-36.2 ~ -29.5 mV) in more negative. The study also revealed that differences of the entrapment efficiency and drug loading among the three types of nano-liposomes were not significant. In vitro drug release test demonstrated that nano-liposomes had a better controlled release. To conclude, by using dextran gel in the preparation of nano-liposome loaded with ginkgolide, the particle size could be effectively controlled and the drug stability could be improved.
