In general, particle simulation methods such as the MPS(Moving Particle Simulation) or SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) methods have some serious drawbacks for pressure solutions. The pressure field shows spurious high fluctuations both temporally and spatially. It is well known that pressure fluctuation primarily occurs because of the numerical approximation of the partial differential operators. The MPS and SPH methods employ a pre-defined kernel function in the approximation of the gradient and Laplacian operators. Because this kernel function is constructed artificially, an accurate solution cannot be guaranteed, especially when the distribution of particles is irregular. In this paper, we propose a particle simulation method based on the moving least-square technique for solving the partial differential operators using a Taylor-series expansion. The developed method was applied to the hydro-static pressure and dam-broken problems to validate it.
In the present study, deposition of discrete and small particles, which diameter is less than $1{\mu}m$, on a filter element was simulated by stochastic method. Trajectory of each particle was numerically solved by Langevin equation and Brownian random motion was treated by Brownian dynamics. Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) was used to solve flow field around the filter collector and deposit layer. Interaction between flow field and deposit layer was obtained from a converged solution from an inner-loop calculation. Simulation method is properly validated and collection efficiency due to different filtration parameters are examined and discussed. Morphology of deposit layer and its evolution was visualized in terms of the particle size. The particle loaded effect on collection efficiency was also discussed.
In this paper, a recently proposed parallel hybrid particle-continuum (DSMC-NS) scheme employing 3D unstructured grid for solving steady-state gas flows involving continuum and rarefied regions is described [1]. Substitution of a density-based NS solver to a pressure-based one that greatly enhances the capability of the proposed hybrid scheme and several practical experiences of implementation learned from the development and verifications are highlighted. At the end, we present some simulation results of a realistic RCS nozzle plume, which is considered very challenging using either a continuum or particle solver alone, to demonstrate the capability of the proposed hybrid DSMC-NS method.
A new multi inner stage(MIS) cyclone was designed to remove the acidic gas and minute particles of harmful materials produced from electronic industry. To characterize gas flow in MIS cyclone, pressure and velocity distribution were calculated by means of computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial program. Also, the flow locus of particles and particle removal efficiency were analyzed by Lagrangian method. When outlet pressure condition was -1,000 Pa, the efficiency was the best in this study. Based on the CFD simulation result, the pressure loss and destruction removal efficiency was measured through MIS cyclone experiment.
We present numerical results for inertialess elliptic particle suspensions in a Newtonian fluid subject to simple shear flow, using the sliding bi-periodic frame concept of Hwang et al. (2004) such that a particulate system with a small number of particles could represent a suspension system containing a large number of particles. We report the motion and configurational change of elliptic particles in simple shear flow and discuss the inter-relationship with the bulk shear stress behaviors through several example problems of a single, two-interacting and ten particle problems in a sliding bi-periodic frame. The main objective is to check the feasibility of the direct simulation method for understanding the relationship between the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behaviors.
An analysis program for pedestrian flow has been developed to investigate the flow patterns of passenger in railway stations. Analysis algorithms for pedestrian flow based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) are newly developed. There are lots of similarity between particle-laden two phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the unit vector of calculation cell, each particle to passenger, volume fraction to population density and the particle velocity to the walking velocity, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger. By using the developed program, we compared the simulation results of the effects of the location and size of exit and elapsed time.

A homogeneous flow field including more than 2000 spherical particles was directly simulated. Particles are settling by gravity with the Reynolds number ranging from 50 to 300, based on diameter and slip velocity. Particular attention was focused on the distribution of particles. The Reynolds-number dependence, influences of particle rotation and loading ratio, and the dynamics of particle clusters are discussed. In the higher Reynolds number case, the wake attraction causes particle clusters and the average drag coefficient decreases significantly. Non-rotating particles maintain cluster structure and rotating ones moves randomly in the horizontal direction. It is because of the difference in the direction of the lift force.
The Lagrangian dispserion of fluid particles in inhomogeneous turbulence is investigated by a direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow. Fluid particle velocity and acceleration along a particle trajectory are computed by employing several interpolation schemes such as linear interpolation, high-order Lagrange polynomial interpolation and the Hermite interpolation schemes. The performances of the schemes are evaluated through comparison of errors in computed particle positions, velocities and accelerations against spectral interpolation. Adopting the four-point Hermite interpolation in the homogeneous directions and Chebyshev polynomials in the wall-normal direction appears to produce most reliable Lagrangian statistics including acceleration correlations with a reasonable amount of computational overhead.
As a Lagrangian particle method, Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method has great capability to capture interface/surface. In recent years, the multiphase flow simulation using MPS method has become one of the important directions of its developments. In this study, some key methods for multiphase flow have been introduced. The interface tension model in multiphase flow is modified to maintain the smooth of the interface and suitable for the three-phase flow. The mass transfer at immiscible liquid interface entrained by single bubble which could occur in Molten Core-Concrete Interaction (MCCI) has been investigated using this particle method. With the increase of bubble size, the height of entrainment column also increases, but the time of film rupture is slightly different. With the increase of density ratio between the two liquids, the height of entrained column decreases significantly due to the decreasing buoyancy of the denser liquid in the lighter liquid. In addition, the larger the interface tension coefficient is, the more rapidly the entrained denser liquid falls. This study validates that the MPS method has shown great performance for multiphase flow simulation. Besides, the influence of physical parameters on the mass transfer at immiscible interface has also been investigated in this study.
