The present study conducted in the Children's Museum investigated patterns of participation by type of exhibit and interaction with 150 5-to 12-year-old children and 50 mothers. A timing and tracking observation checklist was used to document time spent at each type of exhibit and the interaction of children and mothers. All children chose and spent more time interacting with participatory than non-participatory exhibits and they chose more participatory exhibits than mothers. Mothers chose more non-participatory than participatory exhibits and spent more time with non-participatory exhibits than the preschool group. The preschool age group interacted with mothethan other interactions.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between outdoor play environments and child's play behaviors. The data were collected by this study included field measurement survey, and non-participatory observation from 8 child care centers in Seoul. The field measurement survey were conducted from February 20 to March 20, 2005, whereas non-participatory behavior observation were conducted from June 15 to July 10, 2005. The major results showed the following. 1) Most of child care centers were too small, did not use the adequate surfacing to play various activities, and were made of play equipment setting. 2) Child's play behavior focused on functional play activity and construction play activity. 3) The relationship between outdoor play environments and child's play behaviors showed that small outside play environment with monotonous construction of play setting produced functional play behaviors on children. However, in some cases, despite the small and monotonous play area, diverse play behaviors were observed. These playgrounds at least differed from others in that they provided the place where multi purpose play was possible. This finding shows that multi purpose play areas can be an alternative in small playground environment.

To understand the types of interactions between the nurses' college students and patients, this research used Spradley's Cultural Description Method to carry out his eleven- stage research conduct process : participatory observation, cultural description recording, descriptive observation, category analysis, focus observation, classification analysis, selective observation, components analysis, cultural themes, cultural discovery, and cultural description writing. The research participants were 7 nurses' college students practising at the hospital affiliated to E university, and data were collected from May 2000 through primary and secondary in-depth interviews and observations. The cultural characteristics of the subjects extracted from these results were as follows : 1. The students learned through contacts with patients. 2. The students experienced "Sharing" through interactions with patients. 3. The students showed evasive behaviors in difficult situations. 4. The students paltered when faced with difficult situations. 5. The students did not surrender to the refusals of patients. 6. The students identified their studentship. 7. The students regarded human interaction as 'contact'.
Environmental Literacy is needed to establish a sustainable society and can be very well developed through Outdoor Environmental Education(OEE). However, establishing OEE in Korea is a very difficult. Thus, it is very important to find out which factors influence the sustainability of OEE. The purpose of this study is to identify those factors. Participatory observation research and some interviews were used in "The Whale Class" of the University of Georgia in the United States. Major findings and recommendations were as follows: (1) OEEs give participants good experiences about the environment; (2) Program operators of OEEs are enthusiastic about education and environmental conservation; (3) Good educational practices such as cooperative education and participation in conversation foster learning; (4) Good organizations with guest lectures from various environmental fields would be beneficial; (5) Public information about environmental programs would be helpful; (6) Administrative support for those organizations connected to environmental programs would be useful; and (7) OEE provide reflection activities to foster Environmental Literacy.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between outdoor play environments and child's play behaviors. The data were collected by field measurement survey, and non-participatory observation from 9 child care centers in Daejeon. The field measurement survey were conducted from June 20 to July 20, 2004, whereas non-participatory behavior observation were conducted from September 2 to October 10, 2004. The major results showed the following. 1) The characteristics of outdoor play environment in child care centers showed that most of them were too small and did not use the adequate surfacing to play various activities. In many cases, outdoor play settings was made of play equipment setting, play props and manipulative settings, and tree/vegetation. 2) Child's play behavior has been focused on functional play activity and construction play activity. 3) The relationship between outdoor play environments and child's play behaviors showed that small outside play environment with monotonous construction and multi-complex play equipments produced functional play behaviors on children. On the other hand, where various play areas were put together, we could observe relatively diverse play behaviors. However, in some cases, despite the small and monotonous play area, diverse play behaviors were observed. These playgrounds at least differed from others in that they provided the place where multi purpose play was possible. This finding shows that multi purpose play areas can be an alternative in small playground environment.

Students are engaged in classroom learning, and classroom learning occurs not only through conversation but also through nonverbal behavior. In science classrooms especially, there are meaningful nonverbal behaviors such as practical activities like observation and measurement. But these behaviors have not been properly investigated by existing instruments that try to measure students' engagement. This study aims to develop a new instrument for analyzing students' behavioral engagement especially in science classrooms. The method of developing the instrument was structured along three steps. First, student behaviors have been classified into fourteen categories through literature review and a series of observation of elementary science classroom. Second, based on these, a framework for analyzing student behavioral engagement has been developed. With the framework, every student moment could be labeled as Participatory Speech or Participatory Silence or Non-Participatory Speech or Non-Participatory Silence. Third, an instrument to which the framework is applied has been developed by using Microsoft Excel. As a trial, two fourth-grade students in elementary science class were analyzed with this instrument. The results of the trial analysis shows that the longest period of a science lesson was occupied by Participatory Silence (63% and 72%). Among the participatory silence, 'listening' was the most common (51% and 42% of the trial lesson) and 'observing' which is a specific behavior to science was the fourth position (17% and 17% of the trial lesson). It is expected that the developed instrument could be used in improving our understanding of the patterns of student engagement in science classrooms.
Recently many research reports on effective use of mobile devices for museums to provide information on displayed artifacts providing individualized learning space, collaborative learning, and discovery learning, Such devices have many possibilities to support learning as a participatory media and social network. Mobile devices are used, however, limited for its usability and lack in providing expected learning experiences. It offers one-way interaction and they are often limited in providing customized services for different patrons to experience learning and entertainment. In this research, we have adopted user centered design approach to identify the needs and possible usage of PDA system in the museum. Research methods include contextual observation and inquiry with symbolic interactionism for qualitative research and its epistemology. We have developed conceptual model with scenario and storyboard method, and developed vertical prototype with Flash.
This article examines the academic world of Professor Sa jin-sil. This article is not a detailed and rigorous assessment of Prof. Sa's work. During my directly or indirectly meeting with Prof. Sa jin-sil, the writing was based on my experiences. This is why the theme of "participatory observation records" is attached. I was aware that this writing would become a customary and formal funeral speech. Because I thought Prof. Sa also did not want formal and customary writing. The initiation of the participatory observational records that I describe was the literature study of Prof. Sa. What I am about to say in the title of the table of "Known Performance and to Revalue." There I summarized my thoughts on what Prof. Sa contributed to the research of the literature study on traditional performance and my opinion of the justice of the assessment of her contributions. I have not recommitted again about contributions or achievements that have already been widely recognized. What I noticed here was what was to be revalued. I once again stressed the achievements that were not properly evaluated despite their importance and significance. In the ensuing discussion, I looked at Prof. Sa's entirely different academic side. I call the passage "an unexpected result against prejudice." The subjects covered were Prof. Sa's field-contextual studies. Prof. Sa is often referred to as a dramatical history or a traditional performing arts scholar who studies literature. Such an idea is so common that it is easy to overlook field-contextual research results, not literature-based. But I think this is prejudice. That is why the title of the table of contents has the words 'unexpected' and 'prejudice'. Here I actively emphasized and evaluated Professor Sa's achievements in field-contextual studies.
This study is designed to positively transform a teacher's emotional state whilst teaching their classes and be able to create happier lessons for preschool children. To do this, a teacher needs to reflect upon current problems and take steps to deal with them. The data for this study was collected from participatory observation and in-depth interviews, making use of photos, a reflective teacher's journal and interview records from Mar. 28, 2011 through Oct. 7, 2011. The problems identified were, (1) teacher centered classes, (2) a daily routine filled with large group activities, (3) disruptive students, and (4) repetitiveness. The routes to greater classroom "happiness" are (1) rearranging seats, (2) "story sharing activities" in small groups, (3) making a separate "story sharing activity" area, (4) using small groups instead of large groups, (5) changing the daily routine. The role of the teacher in finding greater "happiness" are (1) meaningful, 'real observation', (2) discovering genuine change from small points, (3) power sharing, and (4) growing and developing with children.
