  • The increasing elderly population has created an urgent need for well-managed convalescent hospitals, which should provide appropriate clinical nutrition services. The new accreditation policy requiring participation of all convalescent hospitals since 2013 may promote improvement of clinical nutrition services. This study examined whether or not the accreditation policy has increased practice level and dietitians' perception of the importance of clinical nutrition management. Of the 177 convalescent hospitals accredited by January 30, 2014, dietitians from 73 hospitals (41.2%) completed the survey questionnaire. The pre-tested questionnaire surveyed general characteristics of the hospital and dietitians, current status of clinical nutrition management, and changes in the perception and practice levels of various aspects of food and clinical nutrition management. In average, dietitians with more than 5 years of work experience (68.1%) provided food and clinical nutrition services (71.2%). After accreditation, dietitians' perception of the importance and practice level of clinical nutrition service increased (P<0.001). Level of perception, however, was significantly (P<0.001) higher than practice level before and after accreditation. During perception and practice level of initial nutrition assessment, a compulsory accreditation item, notably and significantly (P<0.001) improved after accreditation. The significant difference between perception and practice level disappeared after accreditation. In conclusion, the accreditation process had positive effects on clinical nutrition management in terms of dietitians' perception and practice levels. Making more accreditation items compulsory and providing motivation and professional education to dietitians in convalescent hospitals could lead to additional improvements.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a promotion campaign for subject recruitment and selection, and reasons of withdrawal from a prospective clinical trial of mandibular two-implant supported overdenture. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The subjects of this study were participants in a randomized controlled clinical trial for investigating prognosis of implants and overdentures with attachments. Recruited subjects were classified by gender, age, and participation motives. Withdrawal rate of the participants before and after enrollment were evaluated. RESULTS. 177 patients were recruited and 51 patients were enrolled for the trial. Among them, 40 participants eventually took part in the trial. 116 subjects (65.5%) were recruited by advertisement and 61 (34.5%) were referred by patients of the hospital or local clinics. Regarding recruitment effectiveness, newspaper recruited the largest number of participants. With respect to referral patients, the proportion of our hospital patients was higher (37/61). Subjects in their 70s comprised the largest proportion (22/51). The male to female ratio was similar (25:26). Final withdrawal rate of all subjects were 74.0%. Among the reasons for withdrawal from enrollment (n=126) presence of remaining teeth and lack of motivation were the most common reasons. CONCLUSION. To facilitate recruitment of clinical trial subjects and improve enrollment rate, it is important to obtain a sufficient number of researchers, perform promotion activity with diverse strategies, cooperate with local dentists, increase the research funding, and alleviate subjects' fear against clinical trials by thorough consultation.

  • Multicultural scholarship in sport and exercise psychology should help us understand and apply cultural competencies for all to be physically active. In the present study, two Asian countries, Japan and Singapore, were chosen. The participation rate for physical activities among adolescent girls tends to be lower than that of boys in both countries. Thus, the purpose of the project was to gain knowledge and understanding about sociocultural factors that may explain adolescent girls' perceptions and behaviors toward sport, physical activity, and physical education (PE). A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with focus groups was used to understand meanings of physical activity among Buddhist Japanese, and Hindu Indians and Christian Chinese from Singapore. Each focus group consisted of four or five girls and female researchers. Based on the analysis, we created four themes which were "cultural identities", "Asian girls and sport/physical activities", "PE experiences", "motivation for future involvement". The Buddhist Japanese, Hindu Indian, and Christian Chinese participants each reported unique physical activity experiences, and all the participants were aware of how Asian culture may affect being physically active. Experiences of PE classes were similar but perceptions of their PE attire were different for Christian Chinese and Hindu Indian adolescent girls. Based on the results, the importance of nurturing cultural competencies and ways to encourage girls to be physically active throughout life were discussed.

  • The purpose of teacher education is to improve the professionalism of teachers above the current level. The type of teacher education to improve the professionalism of experienced teachers is broadly divided into top-down education and bottom-up education. So far, studies on top-down education were commonly conducted in the field of Korean language education. However, there has been an increasing number of studies emphasizing the need for bottom-up education, driven by the voluntary participation of teachers in recent years. The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of reflective teacher education for experienced Korean language teachers. For this purpose, a survey was conducted of 71 Korean language teachers who had more than 5 years of experience. The contents of the survey consisted of opinions regarding existing teacher education, the need for reflective teacher education, and the perception of teaching professionalism. The results showed that experienced Korean language teachers had a positive perception of the existing teacher re-education experience. Also, 91% of the respondents said they intend to participate in the reflective teacher education program. In particular, respondents showed high demands for 'peer coaching', 'peer observation', and 'teaching portfolios' among reflective teacher education programs. Lastly, many respondents selected 'development and utilization of teaching materials', 'encouraging learner's utterances', and 'leading learner's interest and motivation' as sub-elements of teaching professionalism that they wish to improve through teacher re-education.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand how participants' experiences of participating in self-sufficiency projects were. To do this, we analyzed phenomenological methods using in-depth interview data of 48 participants from the Central Self-Sufficiency Foundation, which is qualitative data of the "Project for Strengthening Self-Support for the Working Poor". The study revealed 214 meaningful statements and general re-statements, 24 themes, 9 themes cluster, and 5 categories. Participants' experience was found to be forced work, felt alienated from the self-sufficiency business, and could not receive a clear vision for the future. At the same time, the experience of participating is an opportunity for motivation for change in one's own life, and the essence of becoming a stepping stone to move forward for self-reliance has been derived. Based on the results of this study, we proposed a practical policy task to create a positive expectation effect.
