The purpose of this study was to contribute to family nursing in the areas of reducing stress and improving coping for parents of mentally retarded children. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires during a period of 2 months between November 1994 and January 1995 in the Kyoung-in area. The subjects consist of 176 parents (88 mothers and 88 fathers) of mentally retarded children attending schools for the handicapped. The levels of general stress and of parental role stress were measured with the General stress scale and the Parental role stress scale, respectively. The coping scale developed by Folkman & LaZarus was adopted to measure the level of coping, and the patterns of adaptation scale developed by Damrosch & Perry was adopted to measure the patterns of adaptation. The data were analyzed by a SAS program using Fisher's exact test, paired t-test, and oneway ANOVA. The results are as follows ; 1. The level of general stress was significantly higher in mothers than in fathers. Mothers experienced a significantly greater level of parental role stress than fathers did. No significant difference in the level of coping was observed between mothers and fathers. There were differences in maternal and paternal patterns of adaptation. 2. The adaptation pattern of fathers was different according to their level of general stress, parental role stress and coping. The adaptation pattern of mothers was not different according to their level of general stress and parental role stress, but was according to their level of coping. 3. General stress experienced by fathers was different according to education, health status and support from their spouses. Satisfaction with family life, satisfaction with spouse and the support from spouse influenced coping used by fathers. Their level of parental role stress was not associated with any of their general characteristics. 4. In mothers, the level of general stress was different according to their health status, the level of parental role stress was related to satisfaction with family life and satisfaction with spouse. Their level of coping was associated with the sup port from spouse. The above findings indicate that mothers did not have more coping strategies than fathers did, despite the results which showed that mothers experienced greater stress than fathers did. Especially, the adaptation pattern of mothers was different according to their level of coping. Hence, nursing interventions directed at managing stress and improving coping should be used with mothers who use adaptation pattern 1. In particular, fathers should actively participate in parenting, and support their spouses.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between marital conflict, parental control, and adolescents' anxiety. The participants were composed of 319 high school $1^{st}$ graders (of which 153 were boys and 165 were girls) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on marital conflict, parental control, and adolescents' anxiety. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and regressions. It was observed that marital conflict (frequency/intensity/resolution/content) was positively correlated with adolescents' anxiety. Parental psychological control was also positively correlated with adolescents' anxiety. However parental behavioral control was negatively correlated with adolescents' anxiety. In addition marital conflict was positively correlated with parental psychological control in contrast with that of behavioral control. It was further found that parental psychological and behavioral control partially mediated the relationship between marital conflict and adolescents' anxiety. These results clearly indicate that parental control plays a crucial role in marital conflict and adolescents' anxiety.

Data were collected through self- reported questionnaires over a period of one month between November 1994 and December 199t in the Kyoung-in area. The subjects consisted of 198 parents (99 mothers and 99 fathers) of children attending 1 elementary school and 2 kindergartens. The levels of general stress and of parental role stress were measured with the General stress scale and the Parental role stress scale, respectively, while the Coping scale was used to measure the level of coping. The data were analyzed by a SAS program using paired't-test and oneway ANOVA. The results were as follows : 1. The level of general stress was significantly higher in mothers than in fathers. Mothers experienced significantly greater level of parental role stress than fathers did. In contrast, fathers revealed significantly greater scores in coping than mothers. 2. General stress experienced by fathers was different according to education, occupation, health status, satisfaction with family life and support from spouse. Occupation, health status, satisfaction with family life, satisfaction with spouse and support from spouse influenced parental role stress experienced by fathers. There was no correlation between level of coping and general characteristics. 3. In mothers, the level of general stress was different according to their health status, family type, and number of children, while parental role stress was related to satisfaction with family life, satis-faction with spouse and family type. There was no correlation between level of coping and general characteristics. The above findings indicate that the mothers did not develop more coping strategies than the fathers, despite their experience of greater stress than the fathers. Hence, nursing intervention for managing stress and improving coping abilities should be provided for mothers. In particular, fathers should actively participate in parenting, and support their spouse.

The effects of parental attachment and empathy on social competence were examined with a sample of 403 fifth and sixth graders (192 males, 211 females) attending elementary schools in Gyoung-gi province. All research variables were measured using self-reported questionnaires conducted by the children concerned. Data were analyzed by means of structural equation modeling. The results indicated that parental attachment had no direct effect, but there was an indirect effect on children's social competence mediated by children's empathy. Maternal attachment influenced children's social competence relatively more than paternal attachment. As compared to parental attachment, however, children's empathy was the more influential variable when it came to social competence. These results were consistent in both genders. The results of this study emphasize that children's own characteristics such as empathy tend to be important factors in developing social competence compared to the parental role in middle childhood. Accordingly, interventions aimed at improving children's empathy need to be emphasized in order to develop children's social competence regardless of gender.
This study attempted to explore the parents' parental satisfaction in Korea. Subjects who were selected nationwidely consisted of 1237 parents with children of the kindergarten and primary school. Parental Satisfaction Scale was used to examine the related variables pertaining to parental satisfaction. The results yielded the following conclusions; 1) The period of the transition to parenthood was too short. The mean interval between marriage and first child birth was 14.4 months. 2) Whereas fathers experienced greater parental role fulfillment than mother did mothers' employment status was not correlated with parental satisfaction. 3) Number and gender of the child and parent's educational attainment were related to parental satisfaction. However age at parental onset was not found as the related variable.

The purpose of this study is to develop and validate the parental roles and responsibilities for young children. A survey was conducted on 301 parents with children attending preschools. The parental roles and responsibilities scale were determined from a total of 60 items and 11 sub-factors based on the criteria for goodness, validity, and reliability of items (i.e., factor load ≥ 0.5; AVE ≥ 0.5; CR ≥ 0.7; Cronbach's alpha ≥ 0.7). The parental roles and responsibilities scale include 'hygiene management' (4 items), 'physical activities' (6 items), 'survival and health care' (6 items), 'cognitive development' (5 items), 'emotional stability' (5 items), 'social skills' (6 items), 'social norms and values' (7 items), 'physical environment' (5 items), 'protection' (5 items), 'family community consciousness and family tradition' (4 items), and 'the role and responsibility of parents for childcare institutions' (7 items). It is significant that the indicators on the parental roles and responsibilities for young children were developed and verified to fit the situation in Korea. In this study, 354 college students responded to questionnaires on parental roles, and their parents' and their own attitudes about childrearing. Data were analyzed by SPSS. Findings were that most college students perceived instrumental reasons for becoming a parent, and the parental role as consultant and provision of financial support. Most college students thought that mothers and fathers gave equal responsibility for raising children, that information on childrearing is to be found among friends and other adults, and that pre-parenthood education is important. They perceived their own parents to be satisfied with their parental roles, and they perceived both their patents and themselves to hold favorable attitudes about childrearing. Students' attitudes about childrearing correlated positively with their perceptions about their parents' childrearing attitudes.
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors associated with child's Body Mass Index (BMI) and physical activity. The participants (n = 133) were Korean juveniles (3rd and 4th graders) and their parents. They completed a questionnaire packet including the SPARK (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) survey and the parent equivalent survey. Correlation, multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression analyses were applied to identify the association between child's BMI and 10 factors of SPARK as predict or variables. 25.6% of the participants were classified as overweight (21.1%) or obesity (4.5%). 3 parental factors including mother's BMI and frequency of mother's and father's physical activity were identified as significant predictors of children's BMI. The 10 variables accounted for 28% of the variance (p<.01) in the linear regression model. These results provide insight into parental factors which are related to a child's BMI and physical activity. Parental role modeling which refers to parents' efforts to model an active lifestyle for children plays an important role.
The main purpose of this study is to examine the relation between different patterns of commitment to work role and fathering and the level of life satisfaction. 272 fathers, whose oldest child is under 12 years old with professional, managerial and clerical jobs, were selected. The major findings of this study were as follow: 1) Married men with the oldest child under 12 years old were more likely to be committed to fathering than to work role. 2) The significant variables that affected the level of commitment to fathering were the age of the oldest child, the frequency of participation in the meeting after work, parental satisfaction, and how they perceive the spousal support. And the significant variables that affected the level of commitment to work role were type of job, parental distress, work satisfaction, work distress. 3) Patterns of commitment to fathering and work role were categorized into four groups. The names were given as positively balanced commitment pattern, positive fathering commitment pattern, negative fathering commitment pattern, and totally negative commitment pattern. 4) The significant variables important in classifying the patterns of commitment to work role and fathering appeared to be the age of the oldest child, work distress, the frequency of participation in the meeting after work, parental satisfaction, how they perceive the spousal support, work satisfaction and weekend total working hour. 5) The balanced positive commitment to work and fathering was associated with the highest level of life satisfaction.

The main purpose of this study was to explore the variables predicting mothers' parenting attitudes in Korean-Japanese multi-cultural families in comparison to Korean families. Differences in parental beliefs, life-satisfaction and parenting attitudes between these two groups were also examined. Data were collected via questionnaires from 110 Japanese and 168 Korean mothers of young children. Results revealed that mothers' beliefs on value of child and parental role, life-satisfaction and parenting attitudes were different across the families. Costed-concept of child and low life-satisfaction predicted 'shaming' and 'coercive' parenting for Japanese mothers whereas parental role beliefs as an 'authority' figure predicted 'shaming' parenting for Korean mothers. Life-satisfaction was most influential to predict 'affectionate-rational' parenting for both group.
