  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of expenditure on private education and stress caused by private education on the parental efficacy of mothers of junior and senior high school students. The subjects were 300 mothers of students who were enrolled in the junior and senior high school in Seoul and its suburbs. The results were as follows: First, the level of stress from private education was found to be higher than the degree of parental efficacy. Second, a hierarchical regression analysis was performed by using expenditure on private education and stress caused by private education as independent variables and the socio-demographic characteristics of mothers as control variables in order to identify their effect on the parental efficacy of mothers of junior and senior high school students. The results show that stress from private education and monthly income were significantly related to parental efficacy. That is, the lower the level of stress from private education and the higher the monthly income, the higher was the degree of parental efficacy. These findings suggest that expenditure on private education seems to be determined by the household income level; thus, income may affect psychological stress and parental efficacy of mothers with respect to the process of providing private education.

  • This study examined the effect of parental achievement-oriented expectation on high school students' depression and verified the mediating effect of peer relations on relations. Data were derived from the 7th wave (2016) of Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), and 1,979 high school students were included. Descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and a Sobel test were conducted using STATA. The main results were as follows. First, male adolescents perceived higher parental achievement-oriented expectation, lower peer relations, but lower depression than female adolescents. Second, parental achievement-oriented expectation was negatively related to adolescent peer relations but positively related to adolescent depression. This implies that adolescents whose parents have a higher level of achievement-oriented expectation have lower level of peer relations and higher level of depression. Third, adolescents' peer relations significantly mediated the relation between parental achievement-oriented expectation and high school students' depression. The result of Sobel test supported the significance of the mediating effect. The results highlighted a negative impact of parental achievement-oriented expectation on adolescents' mental health, and addressed how parental achievement-oriented expectation affects adolescents' depression by showing an important mechanism of peer relations, which was missed in previous research.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to the parental role in satisfaction and parenting behaviors. The subjects were 102 employed mothers and 110 unemployed mothers of 5-year-old children living in Seoul, Korea. The measures were questionnaire, the Parental Role Satisfaction Scale and the Parenting Behaviors Scale. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, frequency, percentile, mean, correlation, multiple regression and Chow-test. Consistent with Belsky's model of the determinants of parenting, the parental role satisfaction and parenting behaviors of both employed and unemployed mothers were influenced by child characteristics, parent characteristics, and family factors. Results showed that the parental role satisfaction of both employed and unemployed mothers was correlated to child's birth order, temperament and health of child, mothers' and fathers' age, fathers' educational level, and family income. Parenting behaviors were also correlated to sex of child, child's birth order, temperament of child, parental educational level, and family income for employed mothers and to health of child, mothers' and fathers' age, mothers' educational level, and family income for unemployed mothers. Especially, father's age for employed mothers, and child's temperament for unemployed mothers, were the most strongly related variables for parental role satisfaction. On the other hand, family income for employed mothers, and fathers' age for unemployed mothers were the most strongly related variables for parenting behaviors.

They also reported lower peer attachment, and tended to perceive their friendship functions negative. Second, adolescents who showed stronger attachment to their parents reported more positive feelings and less negative feelings toward their friends. They reported higher peer attachment, and perceived friendship functions positively. Third, adolescents who perceived a higher level of parental marital conflict showed weaker attachment to their parents. Finally, attachment to fathers and mothers mediated the association between parental marital conflict and peer relationships. In other words, parental marital conflict had an indirect effect on peer relationships. The results suggest that attachment to fathers and mothers that resulted from parental marital conflict played an important role in determining peer relationships among adolescents, rather than the existence of the parental marital conflict itself.

The mothers of preform babies whose education level was above graduation from college had lower parental role stress than those who had a lowes level of education. The mothers who had experienced cesarean section hd higher parental role stress than those who gave birth to their baby prematurely.
