The effect ground-cover weeds on the occurrence of apple pests and their natural enemies was studied in an apple orchard in Ahnsung, Kyung-gi do during seasons of 1993 and 1994. The major apple pests and their parasitoids and predators were surveyed on the apple tree canopy in tow experimental plots; a weed-free lot where all weeds were removed by herbicide treatment, and a mowed plot where weeds were allowed restrictly by cutting with an asickle. Also, a sweep net sampling was taken from ground-cover weeds in the mowed plot. There were no significant differences in the abundance of mite and aphids between two plots, although mite densities tend to be lower in the mowed plot. The apple leaf miner, Phyllonorycter ringoniella, was significantly fewer in the mowed plot,. The densities of natural enemies of mites and aphids were slightly higher in the mowed plot. The parasitism of apple leaf miner in the mowed plot was 6~10% and 20~25% higher than that in the weed-free plot in 1993 and 994, respectively. Several natural enemies such as Apanteles kuwayamai (Braconidae), Orius sauteri (Anthocoridae), Chrysopa sp. (Chrysopidae), coccinellidae, and Eulophidae were collected both from weeds and the apple trees, However, potential apple pests were not observed on weeds. The development of insect community on the apple tree canopy was restricted by the pesticide spray on apple trees, while the insect community on weeds was maintained without significant destruction by pesticides spray on apple trees. Consequentely, the ground-cover weeds under apple trees affected occurrences of apple pests and their natural enemies in apple trees. te specialist natural enemies such as apple leaf miner's parasitoids dispersed from weeds to the apple canopy and affected apple leaf miner density significantly. However, generalist predators that have preys available on weeds stayed on weeds, hence their control effects for mites and aphids on the apple canopy were low.
The occurrence of Oriental Tobacco Budworm (OTB), Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee), larvae in early and late planted tobacco fields showed tow or three distinct peaks. The parasitoid, Campoletis chlorideae Uchida, occurred for a short period with one peak following th second peak of OTB in early planted fields. However, in late planted fields, the parasitoid occurred as long as the OTB larvae were abundant. The OTB larval density was higher in late planted fields than in early planted fields. Among four varieties of tobacco, the OBT larval occurrence was relatively high on NC-744 throughout the season. However, more parasitoid cocoons were found in Burleyf-21 and NC-82. The seasonal occurrence of the larval parasitoid, C. chlorideae, assessed by an OTB larval release and recovery method, continued from late June to early September and relatively higher abundance was noticed from early July to late August. In a field cage evaluation of C. chlorideae as a biological control agent of OTB larvae, higher rate of C. chlorideae release (4 females/2$\m^2$) resulted in higher larval parasitism (86.1%) and less leaf damage (8.7%) in tobacco. The leaf damage by OTB larvae was significantly high in the untreatment plot (23.2%) and the lowest damage (1.6%) was recorded in the chemical treatment plot.
In vitro culture of Toxoplasma gondii in HL-60 cells and cell-mediates immunity against Toxoplasma in dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) -induced HL-60 cells, i.e., differentiation into granulocytes, were pursued. HL-60 calls were treated with various concentrations of DMSO, and 1.3%(v/v) for 3 day incubation was chosen as the optimal condition icy differentiation into granulocytes. The degree of differentiation was assayed in physiological and functional aspects in addition to morphological point. When treated with 1.3% DMSO for 3 days, HL-60 cells did not synthesiar DNA materials beyond background level, and showed active chemotactic response to chemotactic peptide, formal-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine(FMLP). Morphologically promyelocytes of high nuclearlcytoplasmic(NIC) ratio changed to granulocytes of relatively low WJC ratio. The relationships between HL-60 cells or DMSO-induced HL-60 cells and Toxoplasma were examined after stain with Giemsa and Buorescent dye (acridine orange). HL-60 cells did not show any sign of torso- plasmacidal activity but showed intracellular proliferation of Texoplasma to form rosette for 72 hr co-culture. In contrast, OMSO-induced HL-60 cells phagocytosed Toxoplasma within 1 hr, and performed a process of intracellular digestion of Toxoplasma thereafter. With the above results, it is suggested that phagosome-Iysosome fusion is one of the critical events for the parasitism by Toxoplasma or for susceptibility of host cells. The in vitro culture system of this study has offered a defined condition to study the protozoan parasite-host cell interactions.
To investigate identification of species distribution state, population density of plant parasitic nematodes and damaged state by parasitism of nematodes with soil samples taken from major cultivating area of medicinal herbs in Kyungbuk districts are summarized as follow; total species belonging to genera in families were identified from 43 different medicinal herbs. The dominant nematode species on medicinal herbs was Meloidogyne hapla by 55.6% of field infection. Damaged state by parasitizm of Root-knot nematode, M. hapla, M. incognita are severed 15 medical plant except P. japonica, infected field were in 54.5~88.0%, and highered in population densities of 2nd larvae, Gall, Egg sac. Percentage of yield-decrease were 57.8% in A. gigas, 49.1% in P.japonica. Lighten effect of M. spp. by cropping system were lowered in population density in Rice+Paeony than Paeony+Paeony in paddy field, and also lowered in Sesame+Paeony or one year fallowing after harvest Paeony than Red pepper+Pseony, Paeony+Paeony in upland field.
The mymarids egg parasite of rice planthopper, Anagrus nr. flaveolus, were investigated to know their parasitic activities after overwitering in the paddy banks and barley fields, their host preferences and seasonal variations in the pesticide sprayed and unsprayed paddy fields of Gyeongnam province O.R.D. at Jinju from 1977 to 1979. The parasitic activities of Anagrus nr. flaveolus after overwintering in the paddy banks were high early in April and tended to decrease remarkably since mid-April by moving to the barley fields. The parasitic rate of Anagrus nr. flavelous was $47.2\~88\%$ between middle and late in April, the peak of egg deposition period. Anagrus nr. flaveolus parasitized Laodelphax striatellus, Nilaparvata lugens, and Sogatella furcifera, but didn't attack the eggs of Nephotettix cincticeps in the paddy fields. High preference was observed with Laodelphax steriatellus. The parasitic activities of Anagrus nr. flaveolus in the pesticide sprayed paddy fields were high in early July and from late August to early September. The parasitic rate in the pesticide unsprayed fields were higher than those of sprayed fields during the pesticide spraying period, from July to August and parasitic activities were active from October to before coming winter.
The purpose of this study is to explore whether the phenomenon of both married and unmarried adults' cohabiting with their parents in Korean society is "unilaterally parasitic" on the child's side, or is "interdependent", characterized by expectation and dependence from the parent's side. As a result of this study possessing the characteristics of theoretic research, the following propensities of parent-dependent adults have been discussed. First of all, it was discovered that the ratio of adult children dependent on and cohabiting with their parents is considerable. Second, parents cohabiting with their adult children have unfavorable sociological features, such as high age, low level of education and income, and lower standards of education and income, compared to parents in normal households. Third, it was found that parent-dependent adults in Korean society maintain a relatively high rate of financial activity and stable employment-based occupation status. Fourth, it was shown that the level of satisfaction on the relationship between parent-dependent adults and their parents was discovered to be high, which is contrastive to the prediction of negative results based on some previous researches. Single adult children's age, their level of education and financial activity status, and their parents' age and level of education were deducted as variables related to the level of satisfaction of the relationship between parents and their children. It seems that the issue of married and unmarried adults' cohabiting with their parents in Korean society should be approached from various perspectives such as political, economic, socio-cultural and developmental aspects. On the basis of this fundamental awareness and several of the materials, it is pertinent that approaches to both married and unmarried adults' cohabiting with parents in Korean society should be distinguished from approaches to those in Japanese or Western society because it reflects the uniqueness of Korean society. In the phenomenon of married and unmarried adults' cohabiting with their parents in Korean society, there are several factors besides the economic factor, especially the socio-cultural factor that have the characteristics of mutual dependence between parents and their children rather than those of unilateral parasitism, in contrast with the phenomenon in Japanese or Western society. This research was aimed to contribute by establishing basic data for policy making by providing necessary information to treat the issues of instability and anxiety related to families and reflection on the matters of generations and parent-child relationships in current Korean society.
Field experiments on red-pepper were conducted in Suweon area during 1972-1974 to determine the seasonal fluctuation of Heliothis assulta H. using black light traps and direct counts. Adult moths emerged in late May, and showed three peaks of fluctuation from late June to middle July, from middle August to late August, and in mid-September. Eggs were first discovered in the field in early July, with peak incidence Iron late August to early September. Larval peaks occurred in late July to early August, in late August and mid-September to mid-October Initial hatching in the field occurred in early July. The numbers of the first larval generation were the highest. The parasitization ratio of Trichogramma spp. on eggs averaged 51 percent during mid-July to mid-September. The numbers of Trichogramma spp. emerging from one tobacco bud-worm egg ranged from one to four, but in most cases one or two egg parasitizing wasps emerged.

Marine parasitoid Amoebophrya infects and kills various bloom-forming dinoflagellates and strongly influences the harmful algal bloom dynamics. We investigated the effect of temperature on survival, infectivity, generation time of the parasite from the parasitoid Amoebophrya sp. and the harmful dinoflagellate host Akashiwo sanguinea system. Temperature had a significant effect on the parasite generation time and infectivity. While the lower temperature ($15^{\circ}C$) arrested parasite intracellular development and infectivity, resulting in the longer generation time ($115{\pm}0.1h$), the higher temperatures ($25^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$) accelerated the parasite development, with the generation times of $58{\pm}0.1h$ and $83{\pm}0.1h$, respectively. Parasite prevalence (percent of host infected) was $71.5{\pm}0.30%$, $54.3{\pm}1.68%$, and $29.6{\pm}1.42%$ at $25^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $15^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results suggest that biological control by parasitism on A. sanguinea bloom would not be highly effective during low water temperature season. Further, water temperature would be an important factor of bottom-up controls for the host-parasite population dynamics.

Rice is responsible for the stable crop of 3 billion people worldwide, about half of Asian depends on it, and rice is grown in more than 100 countries. Rice diseases can lead to devastating economic loss by decreasing yield production, disturbing a stable food supply and demand chain. The most commonly used method to control rice disease is chemical control. However, misuse of chemical control can cause environmental pollution, residual toxicity, and the emergence of chemical-resistant pathogens, the deterioration of soil quality, and the destruction of biodiversity. In order to control rice diseases, research on alternative biocontrol is actively pursued including microorganism-oriented biocontrol agents. Microbial agents control plant disease through competition with and antibiotic effects and parasitism against plant pathogens. Microorganisms isolated from the rice rhizosphere are studied comprehensively as biocontrol agents against rice pathogens. Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Trichoderma sp. were reported to control rice diseases, such as blast, sheath blight, bacterial leaf blight, brown spot, and bakanae diseases. Here we reviewed the microorganisms that are studied as biocontrol agents against rice diseases.

This study investigated the distribution and overwintering of Phanuromyia ricaniae(Hemiptera: Platygastroidea), an egg parasitoid of Ricania sublimata(Hemiptera: Ricaniidea), in order to acquire basic information for biological control. P. ricaniae is distributed in some areas of Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongnam provinces. P. ricaniae is highly prevalent in the southwestern plains, with a tendency to expand to the northeastern area of Korea in line with the dispersal of R. sublimata. The parasitism of P. ricaniae was 1-8% in the field, and the highest in Suncheon, followed by Gurye and Gongju. P. ricaniae overwintered inside the eggs of R. sublimata from September to June of the next year, and transformed into adults in June. The rapid cold-hardiness of P. ricaniae was the highest in the egg state.
