  • This study was performed to survey on the prevalence of swine internal parasites at 12 piggeries being operated by the sawdust fermentative pigsty in Kyongnam central area. To investigate the effects of viability of eggs, larva and cysts, temperatures at the underlayer of the sawdust floor and rooms of pens were taken four times each season for one year. In a pig farms which have been operated by the sawdust fermentative pigsty, eggs of Ascar is suum(8.8%), Trichr is suis(18.3%), Oesophagostomum sp(9.4%), Strongyloides ransomi(1.3%), Hyostrongylus sp(3.8%) and Metastronylus apri(2.3%) were detected from 480 heads of Pigs. Cysts and oocysts of Coccidia(12.7%), Balantidium coli(5.4%) were also detected form 480 heads of pigs. The change of the temperature in the pig room was variable between $13^{\circ}C\; to\; 27^{\circ}C$ accord-ing to outside condition, whereas that in underfloor was consistently stable between $28^{\circ}C \;to\; 31^{\circ}C$ which was strictly suitable for the development of eggs, larva and cysts.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of helminths parasites from collected fecal samples of 410 feral pigeons (Columba livia) in 3 different areas of Gwangjin-gu, Seongdong-gu and Dongdaemun-gu in Seoul from December, 2011 to July, 2012 in Korea. The fecal samples were examined through by the centrifugation method using formalin-ether solution. The overall prevalence of parasites in the pigeons was 29.27% (120/410). Two nematodes (Tetrameres spp. and Capillaria spp.) and one protozoa (Eimeria spp.) were identified. In the case of nematodes, Tetrameres spp. dominated numerically (58, 14.15%), followed by Capillaria spp. (10, 2.44%) and oocysts of Eimeria spp. were detected in 78 cases (19.02%). This investigation introduces the result of examination on the prevalence of parasites in feral pigeons from some areas in Seoul for the first time.

  • The in-vitro eliminative effects of against three types of herbal extract and formalin Ichthyophthirius multifiliis were examined. All parasites were killed within one hour after exposure to the 500 fold dilution of the complex herb extract whereas the 10 fold dilution of the fertilized solution of Salvia plebeia R. Br. killed all parasites within one hour after exposure. The 5,000 fold dilution of the extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves killed all parasites within one hour after exposure. As a comparative agent, formalin killed all parasites within one hour at 100 ppm. As the results, the extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves extracts have the most eliminative ability against the parasite. No differences were found among different parasite density in eliminative effects of the three types of herbal extracts and formalin. Also there were no changes in the fish gill tissues after exposure for two hours to the 5,000 fold dilution of the extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves.

  • Molecular techniques have been introduced for malaria diagnosis because they offer greater sensitivity and specificity than microscopic examinations. Therefore, DNA isolation methods have been developed for easy preparation and cost effectiveness. The present study described a simple protocol for Plasmodium DNA isolation from EDTA-whole blood. This study demonstrated that after heating infected blood samples with Tris-EDTA buffer and proteinase K solution, without isolation and purification steps, the supernatant can be used as a DNA template for amplification by PCR. The sensitivity of the extracted DNA of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax was separately analyzed by both PCR and semi-nested PCR (Sn-PCR). The results revealed that for PCR the limit of detection was $40parasites/{\mu}l$ for P. falciparum and $35.2parasites/{\mu}l$ for P. vivax, whereas for Sn-PCR the limit of detection was $1.6parasites/{\mu}l$ for P. falciparum and $1.4parasites/{\mu}l$ for P. vivax. This new method was then verified by DNA extraction of whole blood from 11 asymptomatic Myanmar migrant workers and analyzed by Sn-PCR. The results revealed that DNA can be extracted from all samples, and there were 2 positive samples for Plasmodium (P. falciparum and P. vivax). Therefore, the protocol can be an alternative method for DNA extraction in laboratories with limited resources and a lack of trained technicians for malaria diagnosis. In addition, this protocol can be applied for subclinical cases, and this will be helpful for epidemiology and control.

  • The prevalence of intestinal parasites and CLonorchis sinensis infection was observed among inhabitants in the upper stream of Kumgang (River) from Junuary to October 1991. A total of 743 fecal specimens was examined by cellophane thick smear and formalin-ether concentration technique. The parasite positive rate including helminth eggs and protozoan cysts was 40.8%, the positive rates for every species were: Clonorchis sinensis 30.8%, Metqgonimur app. 14.5%, Fosciolc spry. 0.7%, Tqsnia app. 1.5%, Asccris lumbricoides 0.4%, Enterobius vermicularis 0.1%, Hookworm 0.1%, Trichuris kichiura 1.6%, Entamoeba coli 0.7%, E. histolytica 0.3%, Endolimox nana 0.3%, Giardia lamblia 0.3% and lodamoebc buetschlii 0.1%, respectively. The cumulative positive rate in Okchon-gun showed 51.1%, in the Kumsan-gun 50.8% and in the Muju-gun 28.6%. Through this survey, it was concluded that the soil transmitted intestinal parasites including helminthseggs and protozoan cysts have been decreased remarkably among the inhabitants along the upper stream of Taechong Dam, Kum-gang (River), on the other side, Clonorchis sinensis, Metogonimw app. and Tuenin sap. are still inorderate prevalent. Key words: Intestinal parasites, Clonorchis sinensis, Metogonimus app. Fasciolc sup. Kumgang (River).
