  • The common squid, Todarodes pacificus was infected by parasites. The parasites may be infective to humans if common squid are eaten raw as 'sashimi' or 'sushi'. The species of the parasites in host, T. pacificus were Tentacularia sp., Orygmatobothrim sp. and Ponocaecum sp.. The prevalence, relative density and mean intensity of three parasites were $100.00\%$, 24.13 and 24.13 respectively.

  • Diseased tiger puffer (Takijugu rubripes) showed anorexia and severe anemia in the gills. In wet mount preparations Heterobothrium sp. with 4 sets of clamps on the opisthohaptor attached to the gill filaments of the diseased fish. From the drum-shaped filter for filtration of the culturing water and the sediment of aquarium held the diseased fish in the laboratory, their eggs forming long strings through connection of the bipolar filaments could be easily collected. The parasites with 4 pairs of clamps on the opisthohaptor were 2.38mm in length and 0.71 mm in width, but had no isthmus which was separated the opisthohapor from the body proper. The parasites could be easily distinguished from Heterobothrium tetrodonis and H. okamotoi in the absence of distinct isthmus, and resembled H. yamagutii described from the gills of Takifugu xanthopterus in Japan. Their eggs were yellowish spindle in shape and 180-200 x 5-6 Iffil in size, which were pointed at both ends. The eggs were linked to adjacent egg shells like a string of beads by the filaments. Onchomiracidia, ciliated larvae spawned from the eggs were 133 Iffil (120-146 Iffil) x 751ffil (68-80 Iffil) in size. The length of the ciliates was 12 Iffil in the anterior part of the larvae and 14 Iffil in the posterior part. Round or leaf-shaped young parasites attached on the secondary gill lamellae. There was a tendency that most of round smaller parasites without an opisthohaptor were found in the middle part of the gill lamellae while leaf-shaped larger ones with a opisthohaptor attached on the distal part of the gill filaments. Each clamp of mature parasites grasped one secondary gill filament which resulted in bending of the filaments and hyperplasia of the epithelium and mucous cells. In the branchial cavity around the pseudobranch, mature parasites grasped the adjacent ones by means of the clamps, and the epithelia of the branchial cavity around the parasites showed severe irregular hyperplasia and erosion with strongly PAS-positive mucous cells.

  • As a series of basic study for the prevention of zoonotic parasites, fecal samples and internal organs of cats in Iri and its vicinity were examined for helminth and their ova or protozoan oocysts from November 1994 to March 1995. The results obtained were summarized as follows; Out of the 133 samples, 101(75.9%) were positive and 135(101.5%) were cumulative positive for parasites. The following were identified in the samples and positive numbers of each species detected were ; Toxocura cari, 51;Isospora spp., 27;Spirometra erinacei, 26;Tasnka taentaeformis, 24;Diphyllobothrium latum, 4;and Capillaria spp., 3, respectively. In analyzing the state of infection, 64.9%(61 heads) of all the cats inspected had a single infection, while the rest(excluding the 32 uninfected cats) had mixed infections : 27.6%(26 heads), 6.4%(6 heads) and 1.1%(1 heads) had double, triple, quadruple Infections, respectively. From these results, it can be concluded that since the helminth, zoonotic parasites, in Korean autochthonal cats cause not only various disorders, but also can be very harmful to human beings, they are considered to be of great significance to public health.

  • This study aimed to examine the distribution of gastrointestinal parasitic infections in domestic pigs in the Republic of Korea. From May 2020 to October 2021, 364 pig fecal samples were collected from 75 farms in 7 Provinces and microscopically examined. A total of 170 (46.7%) pigs were infected with at least one of the following parasites: Balantioides coli, strongyles, Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, and coccidia. By parasite species, B. coli, strongyles, A. suum, T. suis, and coccidia oocysts or eggs were detected in 144 (39.6%), 24 (6.6%), 14 (3.8%), 4 (1.1%), and 1 (0.3%) samples, respectively. One hundred fifty-four, 15, and 1 cases showed single, double, and triple infections, respectively. Of the swine fecal samples from 75 farms, 69 specimens (92.0%) were infected with 1 or more parasites. All surveyed farms across the country exhibited a positive rate of over 30%, among which the highest positive rate was 65.0% in Chungcheongnamdo, and Jeollabuk-do was followed by 61.9%. Winter showed a statistically lower prevalence than other seasons. This study showed that gastrointestinal parasites are prevalent in pigs in Korea, although the diversity of parasites is low.

  • Nematode infections compromise human health and reduce agricultural productivtiy. Experiments that exploit the powerful molecular genetics of the free-living nematode Caenorhabdl - elegans have contributed to our understanding of how the major classes of anthelmintic nema-tocides kill worms and how worms might evolve resistance to these drugs In C. elegans, as in parasites, benzimidixoles interfere with microtubule polyumerization the imidazothiazoles/tetra-hydropyrimidines activate nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and the macrocyclic la ctones activate qlutamate-gate chloride chanels. Mutant alleles of genes that encode drug targes often confer resistance in C. elegans. Preliminary evidence suggests that alleles of homologous genes in parasites will, in many cases, also play a role in resistance. Thus information acquired from C. elegans can be usefully applied to understand the mechanisms of drug sensitivity and the genetics of resis-tance in parasites.

  • Four genera of metazoan parasites were recovered from 3 of 6 Sebastes pinniger examined during January 2003. Two hundred forty-five metazoan parasites were recovered. Trochopus trituba Sekerak and Arai, 1977 and Anisakis larvae were found to he infected S. finniger Gill and te be abundant in this rockfish. One hundred eleven worms of monogenean trematodes and 134 larval anisakine nematodes were also found in this fishes. Precise positions with regard to gills, fins, and gastrointestinal tracts were recorded on S. pinniger to determine distribution of metazoan parasites of Trochopus trituba, Anisakis simplex larva, Contracaecum sp. larva, and Pseudo terranova decipiens larva. The monogenean trematodes, T. trituba were attacked to the gill arches and fin, and the larval anisakine nematodes, A. simplex, Contracaecum sp.,and P. decipiens were found on the visceral organs such as intestine, omentum and stomach wall. The second gill arches were the most heavily infested and posterodorsal region of the gill arches contained most monegenenn trematodes. The nam site of infestation of larval anisakine nematodes were the intestine.
