  • A computer program is developed for the prediction of NO generation by the addition of water moisture and water electrolysis gas in LNG-fired turbulent reacting flow. This study is the first part to deal with the moisture effect on NO generation. In this study, parametric investigation has been made in order to see the reduction of thermal NO as a function of amount of moisture content in a LNG-fired flame together with the swirl and radiation effect. First of all, calculation results show that the flame separation together with the NO concentration separation are observed by the typical flow separation due to strong swirl flow. With a fixed amount of air, the increased amount of water moisture from 0 to 10% by 2% interval shows the decrease of NO concentration and flame temperature at exit are from $973^{\circ}C$ and 139 ppm to $852^{\circ}C$ and 71 ppm. The radiation effects on the generation on NO appears more dominant than swirl strength over the range employed in this study. However, for the strong swirl flow employed in this study, the flow separation cause the relatively high NO concentration observed near exit after peak concentration in the front side of the combustor.

  • In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing design rules for stainless steel members, while the investigation on bolted connections is relatively limited, in particular at elevated temperatures. In this paper, experimental and numerical investigations on stainless steel bolted connections at ambient and elevated temperatures from the literature were reviewed. Firstly, the research program that focused on structural behavior of cold-formed stainless steel (CFSS) bolted connections at elevated temperatures carried out by the authors were summarized. Over 400 CFSS single shear and double shear bolted connection specimens were tested. The tests were conducted in the temperature ranged from 22 to $950^{\circ}C$ using both steady state and transient state test methods. It is shown that the connection strengths decrease as the temperature increases in the similar manner for the steady state test results and the transient state test results. Generally, the deterioration of the connection strengths showed a similar tendency of reduction to those of the material properties for the same type of stainless steel regardless of different connection types and different configurations. It is also found that the austenitic stainless steel EN 1.4571 generally has better resistance than the stainless steel EN 1.4301 and EN 1.4162 for bolted connections at elevated temperatures. Secondly, extensive parametric studies that included 450 specimens were performed using the verified finite element models. Based on both the experimental and numerical results, bearing factors are proposed for bearing resistances of CFSS single shear and double shear bolted connections that subjected to bearing failure in the temperature ranged from 22 to $950^{\circ}C$. The bearing resistances of bolted connections obtained from the tests and numerical analyses were compared with the nominal strengths calculated from the current international stainless steel specifications, and also compared with the predicted strengths calculated using the proposed design equations. It is shown that the proposed design equations are generally more accurate and reliable than the current design rules in predicting the bearing resistances of CFSS (EN 1.4301, EN 1.4571 and EN 1.4162) bolted connections at elevated temperatures. Lastly, the proposed design rules were further assessed by the available 58 results of stainless steel bolted connections subjected to bearing failure in the literature. It is found that the proposed design rules are also applicable to the bearing resistance design of other stainless steel grades, including austenitic stainless steel (EN 1.4306), ferritic stainless steel (EN 1.4016) and duplex stainless steel (EN 1.4462).

  • In this study, the various load cases by specified by the IEC61400-1 international specification and GL Regulations for the wind energy conversion system were considered, and a specific composite structure configuration which can effectively endure various loads was proposed. In order to evaluate the structure, the structural analysis for the composite wind turbine blade was performed using the finite element method(FEM). In the structural design, the acceptable configuration of blade structure was determined through the parametric studies, and the most dominant design parameters were confirmed. In the stress analysis using the FEM, it was confirmed that the blade structure was safe and stable for all the considerd load cases. Moreover the safety of the blade root joint with insert bolts, newly devised in this study, was checked against the design loads and also the fatigue loads. The fatigue life for operating more than 20 years was estimated by using the well-known S-N linear damage rule, the load spectrum and Spera's empirical equations. The full-scale static test was performed under the simulated aerodynamic loads. from the experimental results, it was found that the designed blade had the structural integrity. Furthermore the measured results were agreed with the analytical results such as deflections, strains, the mass and the radial center of gravity. The studied blade was successfully certified by an international institute, GL, of Germany.

  • The generation of high-purity hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels is essential for efficient operation of fuel cell. In general, most feasible strategies to generate hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels consist of a reforming step to generate a mixture of $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ (steam) followed by water gas shift (WGS) and CO clean-up steps. The WGS reaction that shifts CO to $CO_2$ and simultaneously produces another mole of $H_2$ was carried out in a two-stage catalytic conversion process involving a high temperature shift (HTS) and a low temperature shift (LTS). In a typical operation, gas emerges from the reformer is taken through a high temperature shift catalyst to reduce the CO concentration to about 3~5%. The HTS reactor was designed and tested in this study to produce hydrogen-rich gas with CO to a range of 2~4%. The iron based catalysts (G-3C) was used for the HTS to convert the most of CO in the effluent from the partial oxidation (POX) to $H_2$ and $CO_2$ at a relatively high rate. Parametric screening studies were carried out for variations of the following variables: reaction temperature, steam flow rate, components ratio ($H_2/CO$), and reforming gas flow rate.

  • Magnetic resonance image (MRI) is widely used in brain research field and medical image. Especially, non-invasive brain activation acquired image technique, which is functional magnetic resonance image (fMRI) is used in brain study. In this study, we investigate brain activation occurred by LED light stimulation. For investigate of brain activation in experimental small animal, we used high magnetic field 9.4T MRI. Experimental small animal is Balb/c mouse, method of fMRI is using echo planar image (EPI). EPI method spend more less time than any other MRI method. For this reason, however, EPI data has low contrast. Due to the low contrast, image pre-processing is very hard and inaccuracy. In this study, we planned the study protocol, which is called block design in fMRI research field. The block designed has 8 LED light stimulation session and 8 rest session. All block is consist of 6 EPI images and acquired 1 slice of EPI image is 16 second. During the light session, we occurred LED light stimulation for 1 minutes 36 seconds. During the rest session, we do not occurred light stimulation and remain the light off state for 1 minutes 36 seconds. This session repeat the all over the EPI scan time, so the total spend time of EPI scan has almost 26 minutes. After acquired EPI data, we performed the analysis of this image data. In this study, we analysis of EPI data using statistical parametric map (SPM) software and performed image pre-processing such as realignment, co-registration, normalization, smoothing of EPI data. The pre-processing of fMRI data have to segmented using this software. However this method has 3 different method which is Gaussian nonparametric, warped modulate, and tissue probability map. In this study we performed the this 3 different method and compared how they can change the result of fMRI analysis results. The result of this study show that LED light stimulation was activate superior colliculus region in mouse brain. And the most higher activated value of segmentation method was using tissue probability map. this study may help to improve brain activation study using EPI and SPM analysis.

  • To evaluate the bioequivalence of two venlafaxine formulations, a standard 2-way randomized cross-over study was conducted in twenty-four healthy male Korean volunteers. A single oral dose of 75 mg of test formulation Venfaxine $OR^{(R)}$ (tablet) or reference formulation Efexor $XR^{(R)}$ (capsule) was administered with one-week washout period. Plasma concentrations of venlafaxine were assayed for over a period of 72 hours with a well validated method using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). The $mean{\pm}S.D$. of maximum concentration $(C_{max})$ and elimination half-life $(t_{1/2})$ were $64.7{\pm}28.5$ ng/mL, $9.2{\pm}3.0$ h, and $67.2{\pm}30.2$ ng/mL, $9.9{\pm}3.5$ h for test and reference formulations, respectively. Time to reach maximum concentration $(T_{max})$ expressed in median value (range), for the test and the reference, were 10 h (6-14) and 8h (4-12), respectively. Similarly, area under the plasma concentration-time curve, from time zero to last sampling time $(AUC_t)$ and from time zero to time infinity $(AUC_{inf})$, for test and reference formulations were $1185{\pm}755$, $1326{\pm}896$ and $1124{\pm}737$, $1185{\pm}755$ $ng{\cdot}h/mL$, respectively. The parametric 90% confidence intervals on the mean of the differences between the two formulations (test-reference) of the log transformed values of $AUC_t$, and $C_{max}$ were 0.9630 to 1.1383 and 0.8650 to 1.0446, respectively. The overall results indicate that the two formulations are bioequivalent and can be prescribe interchangeably.

  • This study has been made to execute a research in order to lead the improvement of indoor air quality, examining the indoor ventilation characteristics by using a numerical analysis method. To this end an extensive parametric investigation are made according to various external flow variables such as main wind direction and wind speed by season, building layout design, and location of ventilators, etc. in Daedeok Techno Valley, one of large-scaled apartment in Daejeon. It is observed there was a significant difference of main wind direction between summer and winter. The main wind direction in summer was a south wind, and on the contrary the direction in winter is northnorthwest, which is similar to the average main wind direction for 10 years. One of the important calculation results is that the change of wind direction causes a significant effect on the apartment ventilation by the change of pressure difference around each complex of apartment. In case of favorable area of ventilation, the indoor ventilation rate can meet 0.7 ACH from the standard value only with natural ventilation. On the contrary, in other area the value was much lower than the standard value. If the calculation result applies to the design of layout apartment or placement of ventilators, it will be greatly helpful to the energy saving because it can be parallel with the natural ventilation to help securing ventilation rate, not much depending on the mechanical ventilation.

  • Recently, offshore bucket cut-off walls were developed to solve several problems in conventional offshore cut-off walls. In this study, a numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the seepage stability of offshore bucket cut-off walls. The ground was assumed as uniform homogeneous sand and steady state flow conditions were applied. The flow condition was compared among 2-dimensional flow (2-D), 2-dimensional concentrated flow (2-DC), and axisymmetric flow. The analysis results showed that the seepage velocities in axisymmetric flow were about 1.5 and 2 times larger than those of 2-DC and 2-D flow conditions, respectively. Thereafter, the axisymmetric flow condition was applied because the seepage flow was concentrated toward the center of the circular-shaped wall. A parametric study was performed varying bucket radius, penetration depth, total head difference between in and outside of the wall. The exit gradient, which used for the calculation of piping stability, decreased with increase of the penetration depth and bucket radius. Design charts were proposed to estimate the factor of safety and the exit gradient at various analysis conditions. Finally, the design equation was proposed to calculate the exit gradient for the preliminary design of the bucket cut-off wall.

  • Recently, use of the precast concrete (PC) system, which can increase economy by minimizing field work, has rapidly increased. However, the PC system cannot exhibit structural performance under construction, specifically before integration between members. Furthermore, since it is difficult to secure the structural integrity of beam-column joints even after construction, the PC system is vulnerable to progressive collapse. In the PC system, various types of details for PC beam-column joints have been proposed, while the structural/construction details of PC system generally used in Korea differ from those of overseas PC systems. However, studies on the progressive collapse of the domestic PC system are limited. Thus, in this study, we investigated the structural/construction details of PC beam-column joints mainly used in Korea. Based on the investigation, for the prototype PC system with typical joint details, a nonlinear finite element analysis was carried out to evaluate its structural performance under progressive collapse. Further, a parametric study was performed, and the effect of the design parameters was investigated, to recommend a method to improve the progressive collapse resistance of the PC system.

  • The use of land at the time of investigation of groundwater quality in the rapidly urbanized Bu-chon city is classified into 5 categories based on the change process of land use. The difference in groundwater quality according to the land use and its usage period is tested by non-parametric statistical procedures. The seven constituents of water quality with the highly frequent detection in the area for this study are used for the statistical test. The shallow groundwater quality within the areas of the same land use at the time of investigation varies significantly according to the period of land usage. The concentration of KMnO$_4$consumed and hardness is significantly higher in the old residential area (of more than 20 years old) than in the younger one (of less than 10 years old). The quality of the shallow groundwater is also significantly different among the three categories with the similar period of land usage (of more than 15 years old). The concentration of No$_3$-N, hardness and total solid is significantly higher in the residential area than in the agricultural one (namely, the area used as paddy fields 2 to 5 years ago). The median concentration of these constituents is 2.2 to 3.8 times higher in the residential area than in the agricultural one. The concentration of NO$_3$-N, KMnO$_4$, consumed and Cl is significantly higher in the industrial area than in the agricultural one. The median concentration of these constituents is 5.5 to 18 times higher in the industrial area than in the agricultural one. The concentration of KMnO$_4$consumed is significantly higher in the industrial area than in the residential area. The median concentration of these constituents is 12 times higher in the industrial area than in the residential one. The spatial distribution of shallow groundwater quality in the rapidly urbanized area is closely related to the period of land usage as well as the land use, which is presumed to be attributed to the difference in the concentration and leakage rate of the contaminants leaking from damaged sewer into shallow groundwater.
