Among others, a question that has long been unanswered is why the seasonal variation of volume transport is larger in the Soya and Korea/Tsushima Straits than in the Tsugaru Strait. An attempt is made to answer this question in terms of the island rule with friction being taken into account. The problem is idealized as a simple model. The model results indicate that volume transport through a channel is determined not only by the circulation created around the adjacent island but also by those created around the neighboring islands farther away. The latter is due to the presence of bottom friction in the channels. The volume transports through the Korea/Tsushima, Tsugaru and Soya Straits estimated from the model using observed wind data show the general pattern of observed seasonality, although they contain large errors associated with the uncertain frictional parameter employed in the model. The model indicates that the observed seasonality arises essentially from the fact that wind stress curl changes its sign, from negative in the summer to positive in winter, following a large fluctuation of zero-stress curl latitude east of Hokkaido.
To evaluate the combustion instability of a gas turbine combustor, the DMD technique was applied. The mode frequency results for each fuel composition were compared with FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) results. The damping coefficient, which is a quantitative parameter for combustion instability, was evaluated for 5 experimental cases. The flame transfer function (FTF) was calculated in the most unstable test case. In deriving the FTF, gain and phase were calculated using DMD technique. As a result of the analysis of the OH radical perturbation of the DMD, the heat release fluctuation was the highest at 100 Hz, at which the highest value of gain is observed. The frequency of FFT and FTF were different. In order to clarify the reason for this, FTF for various resonance frequencies was performed and it shows that the pattern of gain was similar to FFT.
We suggest a monitoring procedure to detect changes in the mean of the stochastic process. The monitoring procedure is based on penalized least squares estimates. Unlike the fluctuation (FL) monitoring, we use the numbers of nonzero estimates not the fluctuations of sequential parameter estimates. We investigate the behavior of the proposed monitoring procedure by means of a simulation study and compare its performance with CUSUM monitoring.
A stochastic numerical model for predictions of differential settlement of foundation Eoils is developed in this Paper. The differential settlement is highly dependent on the spatial variability of elastic modulus of soil. The Kriging method is used to account for the spatial variability of the elastic modulus. This technique provides the best linear unbiased estimator of a parameter and its minimum variance from a limited number of measured data. The stochastic finite element method, employing the first-order second-moment analysis for computations of error Propagation, is used to obtain the means, ariances, and covariances of nodal displacements. Finally, a reliability model of differential settlement is proposed by using the results of the stochastic FEM analysis. It is found that maximum differential settlement occurs when the distance between two foundations is approximately same It with the scale of fluctuation in horizontal direction, and the probability that differential settlement exceeds the allot.able vague might be significant.

This paper presents a study on the fuzzy based approach for the safety assessment of human body under ELF electric and magnetic(EM) field considering power system states. The analysis of ELF EM field based on quasi-static method is introduced. UP to the present, the analysis of ELF EM field has been conducted with the consideration of one transmission line, or a power line model only In this paper, however, the power system is included to model the expected and/or unexpected uncertainty caused by the load fluctuation and parameter changes and the states are classified into two types, normal state resulting from normal operation and emergency state from outages. In order to analyze the uncertainty in the normal state, the Monte Carlo Simulation, a statistic approach was introduced and line current and bus voltage distribution are calculated by a contingency analysis method, in the emergency state. To access the safety of human body, the approach based on fuzzy linguistic variable is adopted to overcome the shortcomings of the assessment by a crisp set concept. In order to validate the usefulness of the approach suggested herein, the case study using a sample system with 765(kV) was done. The results are presented and discussed.
The lack of controllability over the wind causes fluctuations in the output power of the wind generators (WGs) located at the wind farms. Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) equipped with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) can significantly smooth these fluctuations by injecting or absorbing appropriate amount of active power, thus, controlling the power flow of WGs. But because of the component aging and thermal drift, its harmonic filter parameters vary, resulting in performance degradation. In this paper, Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) is used as a robust control scheme in order to deactivate the effects of filter parameters variations on the wind power generation power smoothing performance. The proposed robust control strategy of the DSTATCOM is successfully applied to a microgrid, including WGs. The simulation results obviously show that the proposed control technique can effectively smooth the fluctuations in the wind turbines' (WT) output power caused by wind speed variations; taking into account the filter parameters variations (structural parameter uncertainties).

This study was conducted to simulate long seres of synthetic monthly flows by multi-season first order Markov model with selection of best fitting frequency distribution, harmonic synthetic and harmonic regression models and to make a comparison of statistical parameters between observes and synthetic flows of five watersheds in Geum river system. The results obtained through this study can be summarized as follow. 1. Both gamma and two parameter lognormal distributions were found to be suitable ones for monthly flows in all watersheds by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. 2. It was found that arithmetic mean values of synthetic monthly flows simulated by multi-season first order Markov model with gamma distribution are much closer to the results of the observed data in comparison with those of the other models in the applied watersheds. 3. The coefficients of variation, index of fluctuation for monthly flows simulated by multi-season first order Markov model with gamma distribution are appeared closer to those of the observed data in comparison with those of the other models in Geum river system. 4. Synthetic monthly flows were simulated over 100 years by multi-season first order Markov model with gamma distribution which is acknowledged as a suitable simulation modal in this study.

In this paper, it is suggested that the selection method of parameter of Power System Stabilizer(PSS) with robustness in low frequency oscillation for Static VAR Compensator(SVC) using a Real Variable Elitism Genetic Algorithm(RVEGA). A SVC, one of the Flexible AC Transmission System(FACTS), constructed by a fixed capacitor(FC) and a thyristor controlled reactor(TCR), is designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. The proposed PSS parameters are optimized using RVEGA in order to maintain optimal operation of generator under the various operating conditions. To decrease the computational time, real variable string is adopted. To verify the robustness of the proposed method, we considered the dynamic response of generator speed deviation and generator terminal voltage by applying a power fluctuation and three-phase fault at heavy load, normal load and light load. Thus, we prove the usefulness of proposed method to improve the stability of single machine-infinite bus with SVC system.

High-speed and low-speed flows are simulated numerically by flowfield-dependent mixed explicit-implicit (FDMEI) method. This algorithm depends on implicitness parameters of convection, diffusion, diffusion gradients, and source terms which are calculated from the changes of local Mach, Reynolds, Peclet, and Damkohler numbers between adjacent nodes. Convection phenomena or shock waves are resolved from Mach number-dependent implicitness parameters whereas diffusion or viscous actions are simulated by Reynolds number or Peclet number-dependent implicitness parameters. Fluctuation components of all variables are properly accommodated spatially and temporally in the FDMEI procedure. To illustrate, some benchmark example problems are presented for comparisons of the FDMEI results with other available data. These results appear to be encouraging and point toward the need for further investigations of the FDMEI theory.

The effect of equivalence ratio and velocity on the stability of flame in dump combustor was studied in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory scathe dump combustor operating natural gas. Traditionally, peak-to-peak pressure, fluctuation of the heat release rate and Rayleigh index were used to find and control the combustion instability. Cross correlation coefficients, Ci,j which is defined as the normalized value of the integration of the product of two of the mixer pressure, dump plane pressure and heat release rate, are introduced to see whether the flame is stable or not. Ci,j shows more sensitive to combustion status than Rayleigh index in steadily burning flame. Also, the result indicates that the amplitude of Ci,j between heat release and mixer pressure goes up before the flame at the rich de-stabilizing equivalence ratio near $\psi$=0.85. t means Ci:j at this case has a potential to detect the de-stablizing moment in prior to becoming unstable in dump combustor.
