The effect of die upset and heat treatment on the magnetic properties of mechanically ground $Nd_{16}Fe_{78}B_{6}$ alloys has been studied. Although stripe domain patterns parallel to the compression direction were observed after die upset, it was found that crystallographic c-axes of a specimen were not completely aligned along the compression direction' which resulted in the decrease of Br. The average grain size of a die-upset specimen annealed for 5 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$ was about $20\mu\textrm{m}$, resulting in reduced values of Br and $_{i}H_{c}$. The maximum magnetic properties (Br=7.8 kG and $(_{i}H_{c}=14\;kOe) were obtained from the magnet die-upset at $750^{\circ}C$ using the alloy powder ground for 13 hours.
In this study, cross-laminated woods were made with spruce wood and the effects of annual ring angles of perpendicular direction laminae on static bending strength performance were investigated. Static bending strength performances of parallel laminated woods with all layers composed of laminae perpendicular to the grain ($P_{\bot}$ type) were in the order of $90^{\circ}$ > $0^{\circ}$ > $45^{\circ}$. The MOE and MOR for the $45^{\circ}$ annual ring angle were 0.0989 GPa and 3.25 MPa, and it showed the lowest values. By placing longitudinal-direction laminae in the core of $P_{\bot}$ type, the strength performances were markedly improved. In the case of cross-laminated woods with perpendicular-direction laminae in the faces ($C_{\bot}$ type), the bending strength performances were in the order of $90^{\circ}$ > $0^{\circ}$ > $45^{\circ}$, but the differences among annual ring angles were less than those of the parallel-laminated woods. In the case of cross-laminated woods with perpendicular-direction laminae in the core ($C_{\parallel}$ type), the bending strength performances were in the order of $45^{\circ}$ > $90^{\circ}$ > $0^{\circ}$ unlike $P_{\bot}$ type and $C_{\bot}$ type. The MOE and MOR for the $45^{\circ}$ annual ring angle were 12.0 GPa and 55.8 MPa, and it showed the highest values.
Threshing forces of seven varieties, that is, three Japonica type varieties-Irri 348, Irri 345, and Milyang 15, and four Indica type varieties-Milyang 23, Irri 342, Suweon 294 and Suweon 287-, which have been cultivated in the standard fertilization field being at Chungnam Provincial Office of Rural Development, Youseong, Chungnam-do, they were measured every other day in the period from September 28 to October 20 which were included the proper harves ting time. Also the threshing forces were checked in three-dimensional directions. Relationships between threshing forces and moisture contents of the unthreshed rice were examined in the laboratory as dried in the natural condition. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The mean threshing force of Japonica type varieties was about 1969r. and that of Indica type varieties was about 113gr. when external force was loaded in the direction parallel to the grain. 2. The threshing force bent to the grain was about 9.8through 28.2gr. equal to 7 through 21 percent to the threshing force parallel to the grain in Indica type varieties meanwhile about 59.8 through 115.0gr equal to 33 through 50 percent in Japonica type varieties. 3. Under the warmer temperature than $0^{\circ}C$, the change of threshing forces was not great in this experimental period on the harvesting dates. 4. The threshing force decreased s lightly as moisture content decreased in natural drying under the shade after cutting. 5. The threshing force of the lower portion was a little biger than that of the upper portion in an ear.

Ground water flow can be studied with model test. Model test of ground water works are necessary for economic and safe design of the works. Also influence of the ground water flow to the durability and safety of hydraulic structures can be studied with this model. a. Sand model ; Water flow through porous media is the principle of sand model. Darcy's formula is the basic equation, $q=k{\frac{dh}{ds}}^{\circ}. The effect of the ground water flow on the grain system itself is represented with this model only. b. Hele-Shaw model ; In this model use is made of the viscous flow analogy. Viscous fluid such as glycerine flowing through two parallel plates depends on Poiseuille law, $q=-c{\frac{dh}{ds}}$. The analogue can be used vertically and horizontally. c. Heat model ; This is based on the analogy of the Fourier's law for heat conduction and Darcy's law for ground water flow. Especially unsteady problem can be studied with this model. A difficulty of the construction of this model is the isolation, which has to prevent losses of the heat. d. Electirc model ; Ohm's law for electric current is analogous to Darcy's law. Resistance material such as metal foil, graphite block, water with salt added, gelatine with salt added, ete. is connected to electric sources and resistor, and equi-voltage line is detected with galvanometer, $N_aCl$, $CuSo_4$, etc. are used as salt in the model. e. Membrane model ; This model is based on the facts that the deflection of a thin membrane obeys Laplace's equation if there is no load in the direction perpendicular to the membrane, and if the dellection is small.
A simplified material model, which was efficiently implemented in a three-dimensional finite solid element (3D FE) analysis for wood was developed. The bi-linear elasto-plastic anisotropic material theory was adopted to describe constitutive relations of wood in three major directions including longitudinal, radial and tangential direction. The assumption of transverse isotropy was made to reduce the requisite 27 material constants to 6 independent constants including elastic moduli, yield stresses and Poisson's ratios in the parallel, and perpendicular to grain directions. The results of Douglas fir compression tests in the three directions were compared to the 3D FE simulation incorporated with the wood material model developed in this study. Successful agreements of the results were found in the load-deformation curves and the permanent deformations. Future works and difficulties expected in the advanced application of the model were discussed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of cleavages on indirect tensile strength (ITS) of the granite. Brazilian disc tests and ring tests with three different hole sizes were performed. 2D DEM (Discrete Element Method) simulation was employed to further understand the failure process during the tests and the mechanism behind. Results show that ITS decreases across hardway, grain and rift cleavage. Measured average ITS from ring tests is about 2.5 ~ 6.4 times of those measured from Brazilian disc tests, and it decreases with increasing ratio of diameters of inner hole and specimen. Failure pattern in ring tests is influenced by both hole size and relative positions of cleavages parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction.

Two kind of $\beta$-SiC powders of different particle sizes (${\sim}1.7\;{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}30\;nm$), containing 7 wt% $Y_2O_3$, 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 1 wt% MgO as sintering additives, were prepared by hot pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under applied pressures, and then were hot-forged at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 6 h under 40 MPa in argon. All the hot-pressed specimens consisted of equiaxed grains and were developed grain growth after hot-forging. The smaller starting powder was developed the finer microstructure. The microstructures on the surfaces parallel and perpendicular to the pressing direction of the hot-forged SiC were similar to each other, and no texture development was observed because of the lack of massive $\beta$ to $\sigma$ phase transformation of SiC. The fracture toughness (${\sim}3.9\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$), hardness (~ 25.2 GPa) and flexural strength (480 MPa) of hot-forged SiC using larger starting powder were higher than those of the other.
The characteristics of the Brazilian tensile strengths(σt) parallel to the rock cleavages in Jurassic granite from Geochang were analysed. The evaluation for the six directions of rock cleavages was performed using the parameter values on microcrack length and the above strength. The strength values of the five test specimens belonging to each direction were classified into five groups. The strength values of these five groups increase in order of group A < B < C < D < E. The close dependence between the above microcrack and strength was derived. The analysis results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the chart showing the variation and characteristics of strength among the three rock cleavages were made. In the above chart, the strength values of six directions belonging to each group were arranged in order of rift(R1 and R2), grain(G1 and G2) and hardway(H1 and H2). The strength distribution lines of the five groups concentrate in the direction of R1. And the widths among the above five lines indicating strength difference(Δσt) are the most narrowest in R1 direction. From the related chart, the variation characteristics among the two directions forming each rock cleavage were derived. G2(2)-test specimen shows higher value and lower value of the difference in strength compared to the case of G1(1)-test specimen. These kinds of phenomena are the same as the case between the test specimen H2(2) and H1(1). The strength characteristics of the above test specimens (2) suggest lower microcrack density value and higher degree of uniformity in the distribution of microcracks arrayed parallel to the loading direction compared to those of test specimens (1). The six strength values belonging to each group were arranged in increasing order in the above chart. The strength values of the test specimens belonging to both group D and E appear in order of R1 < R2 < G1 < H1 < G2 < H2. Therefore, the strength values of group D and E can be indicator values for evaluating the six directions of rock cleavages. Second, the correlation chart between slope angle(θ) and strength difference(Δσt) were made. The values of the above two parameters were obtained from the five strength distribution lines connecting between the two directions. From the chart related to rift plane(G1-H1, R'), grain plane(R1-H2, G') and hardway plane(R2-G2, H'), the slope values of linear functions increase in order of R'(0.391) < G'(0.470) < H'(0.485). Among three planes, the charts related to hardway plane show the highest distribution density among the five groups. From the related chart for rift(R1-R2, R), grain(G1-G2, G) and hardway(H1-H2, H), the slope values of linear functions increase in order of rift(0.407) < hardway(0.453) < grain(0.460). Among three rock cleavages, the charts related to rift show the highest frequency of groups belonging to the lower region. Taken together, the width of distribution of the slope angle among the three planes and three rock cleavages increase in order of H' < G < R' < R < G' < H. Third, the correlation analysis among the parameters related to microcrack length and the tensile strengths was performed. These parameters may include frequency(N), total length(Lt), mean length(Lm), median length(Lmed) and density(ρ). The correlation charts among individual parameters on the above microcrack(X) and corresponding five levels of tensile strengths for the five groups(Y) were made. From the five kinds of correlation charts, the values of correlation coefficients(R2) increase along with the five levels of strengths. The mean values of the five correlation coefficients from each chart increase in order of 0.22(N) < 0.34(Lt) < 0.38(ρ) < 0.57(Lmed) < 0.58(Lm). Fourth, the correlation chart among the corresponding maximum strength for group E(X) and the above five parameters(Y) were made. From the related chart, the values of correlation coefficient increase in order of 0.61(N) < 0.81(Lt) < 0.87(ρ) < 0.93(Lm) < 0.96(Lmed). The two parameters that have the highest correlations are median length with maximum strength. Through the above correlation analysis between microcrack and strength, the credibility for the results from this study can be enhanced.
Changwon City first constructed riverbank filtration plants in Book-Myeon and Daesan-Myeon in Korea in the year 2001. This study evaluated hydrogeological characteristics and groundwater flow simulation between the Nakdong River and the fluvial aquifers adjacent to the river in Book-Myeon, Changwon City. The groundwater simulation calculated the influx rate from the Nakdong River and the fluvial aquifers to pumping wells through the riverbank filtration system. The groundwater flow model utilized drilling, grain size analysis, pumping test, groundwater level measurements, river water discharge and rainfall data. Hydraulic heads calculated by the steady-state model closely matched measured heads in pumping and observation wells. According to the transient flow model, using a total pumping amount of 14,000 $m^3$/day, the flux into the pumping wells from the Nakdong River accounts for 8,390 $m^3$/day (60%), 590 $m^3$/day (4%) is from the aquifer in the rectilinea. direction to the Nakdong River, and 5,020 $m^3$/day (36%) is from the aquifer in the parallel direction to the Nakdong River. The particle tracking analysis shows that a particle from the Nakdong River moves toward the pumping wells at a rate of about 1.85 m/day and a particle from the aquifer moves toward the pumping wells at a rate of about 0.75 m/day. This study contributes to surface water/groundwater management modeling, and helps in understanding, how seasonal change affects pumping rates, water quality, and natural recharge.
The lateral strength test of bending type was done to investigate the lateral capacity of the double bolt connection of domestic larix glulam according to bolt spacing. In the shear specimen, which is bolted connection in the inserted plate type, the hole of bolt was made, changing the diameter of bolt (12 mm and 16 mm), the number of bolt (single bolt : control and double bolt), the direction of bolt row (in parallel to grain : Type-A and in perpendicular to grain : Type-B) and the bolt spacing (Type-A : 4 d and 7 d and Type-B : 3 d and 5 d). Lateral capacity and failure mode of bolt connection were compared according to conditions. In prototype design (KBCS, 2000), the reduction factor of the allowable shear resistance that the bolt spacing is reduced was calculated. The results were as follows. 1) Bearing stress per bolt in the single and double bolt connection of Type-A was directly proportional to bolt diameter and bolt spacing. Bearing stress of Type-B decreased as bolt diameter was increased, and decreased by 2~10% when bolt diameter was increased. 2) In the single bolt connection and the double bolt connection of Type-A, the splitted failure was formed in the edge direction. When the bolt spacing was 3 d in Type-B, bolt was yielded more in the part of tension than in the part of compression, and the splitted failure started at the bolt in the part of tension. In the 5 d spacing specimen, the bolt in the part of tension was yielded similarly to bolt in the part of compression, and the splitted failure started in the part of compression. 3) In the prototype design, the reduction factor was calculated by non-dimensionizing the yielding load in the standard of bolt spacing (Type A : 7 d and Type B : 5 d). In 12 mm bolt connection, the reduction factor of bolt spacing 4 d (type-A) and single bolt connection was 0.87 and 0.55, respectively, and the reduction factor of bolt spacing 3 d (Type-B) and single bolt connection was 0.91 and 0.55, respectively. In 16 mm bolt connection, the reduction factor of bolt spacing 4 d (type-A) and single bolt connection was 0.96 and 0.76, respectively, and the reduction factor of bolt spacing 3 d (Type-B) and single bolt connection was 0.91 and 0.77, respectively.
