Characterization of an isolated reovirus from the paradise fish Macropodus opercularis imported from Southeast Asia (동남아시아로부터 수입된 paradise fish Macropodus opercularis로부터 분리한 reovirus의 특성)

  • In 2008, mass mortality was observed in paradise fish Macropodus opercularis which was imported from Indonesia. PCR of these fish found positive for megalocytivirus and Mycobacterium sp., while an unidentified virus was culture-isolated using CHSE-214 cells. In the present study, we investigated characterization of the unidentified virus and its pathogenicity to determine whether the virus was the causative agent of the mass mortality of paradise fish. The unidentified virus induced cytopathic effect (CPE) with syncytia in CHSE-214 and other fish cells, BF-2, GF, SSN-1, FSP and FFN. The virus was resistant against treatments with IUdR, chloroform, acidity at pH 3, basicity at pH 11 and high temperature at $56^{\circ}C$ for 3h. By electron microscopy, the viral particles were spherical having a double capsid structure with approximately 65 nm in external diameter. Viral genome was composed of at least 10-segmented RNA with sizes ranging from 0.7 kb to 3.6 kb. Based on these characters, this virus can be classified into family Reoviridae. This reovirus did not cause any mortality in an artificial experiment conducted by injecting the virus to paradise fish. This indicates that the reovirus is not only responsible for the mass mortality of paradise fish in 2008.

Molecular and Histopathological Evidence of Mycobacteriosis in Paradise Fish Macropodus opercularis Imported into Korea

  • We report on mycobacteriosis in an imported tropical ornamental fish Macropodus opercularis commonly known as the paradise fish. Mass mortality occurred in paradise fish imported to Korea from Southeast Asia in 2008. The affected fish did not show any outward clinical signs, but enlargement of the spleen, kidneys, and liver was observed on dissection. Histopathological examination revealed numerous granulomas in the spleen, and acid-fast bacilli were observed in the centers of the granulomas. About 65% of spleen DNA samples were PCR positive using mycobacteria-specific primers targeting the 16S rRNA and hsp65 genes. The nucleotide identities of the 16S rRNA and hsp65 genes with those of Mycobacterium marinum were 99.5% and 99.4%, respectively. Although the bacterium was not cultured, the molecular diagnosis and histopathological findings were consistent with mycobacteriosis in paradise fish.

A Cartographic Study on the Earthly Paradise Represented in the Medieval Mappaemundi (서양 중세 세계지도에 표현된 지상낙원의 지도학적 연구)

  • The achievements of the medieval mappaemundi should be evaluated on their own terms and in the context of their purpose. Medieval mappaemundi expressed christian world view which reflected Augustinian theology. These Christian world view and Greek and Roman classical geography were combined to form the cultural barkground of the medieval mappaemundi. These maps had a function to organize physical space according to religious principles. The Christian concept of the world as a temporal phenomenon, derived from the simultaneous creation of time and space as described in St. Augustin's theology was represented in these maps. The purpose of this paper is to consider geographic characteristics of earthly paradise expressed in medieval mappaemundi and their cartographic characteristics. For this, firstly, we reviewed medieval Christian scholars' opinions on earthly paradise. Secondly, centered on geographic location and representation method, we examined cartographic characteristics of medieval paradise mapping, Thirdly, we considered the shift of paradise according to chronological change. Fourthly, we examined the reason why earthly paradise disappeared from world map after fourteenth century.

  • The article considers the problems of envisaging a paradise on earth, with special reference to Jehovah's Witnesses. After an explanation of their relationship to the Christian Protestant tradition, particularly Adventism and American fundamentalism, some key doctrines of the Watch Tower organisation are identified, with particular reference to their belief in a coming earthly paradise. Jehovah's Witnesses are a restorationist movement, seeking a restored paradise on earth, and endeavouring to restore authentic Christianity in what they take to be its original form. Discussion is given to the possibility of physical accommodation on the earth, the position of animals, family life, language, and technology. Finally, brief comparison is made with the expected paradise of the Daesoon Jinrihoe, which is based on a radically different worldview. It is concluded that such differences help to explain why Jehovah's Witnesses have limited success in Korea, as compared with indigenous Korean new religions such as Daesoon Jinrihoe.

Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Pigment Sources on Pigmentation of the Round Tailed Paradise Fish Macropodus chinensis and the Pale Chub Zacco platypus (사료내 색소원료 첨가가 버들붕어 Macropodus chinensis 및 피라미 Zacco platypus 표피의 색택에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effect of supplement of the pigment source in diets on body color for round tailed paradise fish Macropodus chinensis and the pale chub Zacco platypus. Fish (the round tailed paradise fish: 1.6 g/ fish, pale chub: 2.4 g/fish) were fed diets containing various pigment sources (Porphyra powder, Spirulina powder. yeast astaxanthin and paprika extract) twice a day for 6 weeks. Survival of all treatments was above 80%. Weight gain and total carotenoid contents of round tailed paradise fish fed the diet containing Porphyra powder was higher than that of fish fed the other diets. The apparent redness of skin and fin in round tailed paradise fish fed the diets containing paprika extract and yeast astaxanthin was better than that of fish fed the diets containing Porphyra powder, Spirulina powder and the control diet. Weight gain and total carotenoid contents of pale chub fed the diet containing paprika extract were higher than that of fish fed the containing Porphyra powder, yeast astaxanthin, Spirulina powder and the control diet. The apparent redness of skin and fin in pale chub fed the diets containing parika extract and yeast astaxanthin was better than that of fish fed the diets containing Porphyra powder, Spirulina and the control diet. The results of this study suggest that dietary supplementation with paprika extract and yeast astaxanthin can improve redness of skin and fin of round tailed paradise fish and pale chub.

  • John Milton's 17th century epic poem, Paradise Regained, is deconstructed or re-birthed in Panter's new graphic novel, Songy of Paradise in 2017, and the most notable change comes from the main character, Jesus. In the original text, Jesus as an "anointed universal King" achieves his greatness in the progress of lonely journey, and is declared as Son of God. Therefore, Panter's description of Songy as hillbilly is quite stunning. Panter's Punk vagabond, however, shares common aspects with Milton's Jesus in terms of his stubborn resistance against Satan's temptation. Jesus and Songy succeeds in the battle against Satan leading their talk into the "failure of a conversation." This study examines how ironically this punk art embraces the original character of the grand epic while destroying it utterly.

  • This study tries to evaluate the similarities and differences between Paradise Lost and the Journey to the West through the characteristics of Satan and Monkey King. In Paradise Lost, the spirit of Satan revolts God is just like the spirit of Bourgeois revolts the Feudal Aristocracy; however, Monkey King's figure in the Journey to the West is a character with rebellious spirits. In the western world, they often advocate punishments afterward, while the eastern world notes social orders and rules. Although eastern epics have distinct differences toward western epics due to the different cultural and historical backgrounds, the results that the winners at the end always get supreme powers are the same.

The Literary World of T. Tolstaya (따지야나 똘스따야의 문학세계 - '잃어버린 낙원', 유년으로의 회귀)

  • This study focused on the literary world of T. Tolstaya, a Russian writer who takes a crucial position in contemporary Russian literature, drawing upon the wrier's a couple of short stories. 'Youth' is a key motive encompassing all works of Tolstaya, so that it becomes the poetic keynote among her literary works. In order to examine such distinctions of the main characters' world awareness in their youth as shown in Tolstaya's literary works, Chapter 2 of this paper paid a special attention to the analyse of her representative works such as "Sitting on a Golden Terracing Stone" and "Meeting with a Bird", and expressed potential implications of youth with mimetic imagination for her. For Tolstaya, youth is perceived as a paradise but original imagination of youth gradually fades away in adult and ends up with a lost paradise. This is why Tolstaya uses poetic means based on nostalgia for youth like paradise and literary motto for recovery of imagination in youth. In this regard, this study particularly examined the retrospective prologue resisting the power of time as well as different fictional characters living in her own fantastic world. As a result, this study draws a conclusion that such longing and nostalgia for youth and lost paradise as delineated by Tolstaya through retrospective prologue and characters speak for an existential speculation that explores any profound implication of afflictions in reality of human life, rather than focusing on the painful reality of human life which consists of honest dialogues with realities like 'darkness' and 'pain.' In addition, this study, complying with Zolotonosov's ideas which deal with and define Tolstaya's literary works as a shabby and humble box invisibly containing a full wealth of precious jewels inside, sheds a new light on the writer's literary world.

A Study on the Costume Work Applying Kkot Mun(Floral Doors) (꽃문을 응용한 의상 작품 제작에 관한 연구)

  • Buddhist temples and halls signify paradise on earth. Buddhist sutras refer to paradise as a place where flowers fall down like snow, fragrance and music fill the air, flowers blossom and butterflies fly. The Kkot Mun of Buddhist temples are an essential part of the creation of this paradise and are ornamented with elaborate sculptures of flowers and animals. The ornamentation of the Kkot Mun is truly admirable for its artistry and beauty. Although the Kkot Mun is an element of Korean traditional Buddhist architecture, it could also be applied to costume work. I thought the characteristic elements of the Kkot Mun for the costume work were the flower, the lattice and the transparent effect that was made with the lattice and Dagjongee. I used the technique of strap cutting, strap twisting and cut-out for the lattice of Kkot Mun and flower making, knitting, cut-out and quilting for the flower of Kkot Mun. I represented the transparent effect of Kkot Mun with the lapped materials. I selected six remarkable Kkot Mun of Korean temples, revised shapes of these and made six costume works. These six costume works would be the suggestion of costume design if an element of Korean traditional architecture was applied to modern costume making.

Post-Historical Description and Spatial Attribute - Focusing on the Movie Paradise in Service - (탈역사 서술과 공간의 표상 - 영화 <군중낙원>을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the narrative-building method and the post-historical descriptive aspects of the movie Paradise in Service, which deals with the modern history of Taiwan. Although Paradise in Service tells the history of a certain time period, it focuses on the anguish and agony felt by people who lived during that age rather than on the meaning of historical events or interpretation of the past in terms of official historical discourse. That is, as it avoids looking at the present by composing a narrative in the descriptive historical context and from bearing weight from the viewpoint of realism, it gains the possibility of establishing a new field of discourse through a post-historical discussion using descriptive historical texts. However, the movie tries to create fantasy through a special type of licensed prostitution as a means of post-historical description. In other words, when this movie tries to reproduce the microscopic history of common people in trouble because of a historical tragedy, it considers only men and excludes "weak" women. Thus, although Paradise in Service has meaning in that it gives an example of how movies can disrupt official historical discourse and group memory and rewrite history by focusing on individuals, it is limited by its male-centrism.
