  • In this paper, the effect of corrosion level and crack width on the cohesive strength-slip behavior of corroded steel rebar and concrete interface is conducted. The existing studies mainly focus on the decrease in bond strength with respect to the level of corrosion; there are, however, few studies on the decrease in cohesive strength according to the crack width of the concrete surface due to corrosion. Therefore, in this study, a series of tests for the cohesive strength, slip behavior and mass loss of the reinforcing bar is evaluated at the surface of corroded rebar and concrete. It is found that the tendency to decrease the bond strength is closely related to the crack width rather than the corrosion level. Hence, to determine the degradation performance for the bond strength-slip behavior relation, the occurrence of cracks on the concrete surface can be a suitable index.

  • The effect of nitrogen gas pressure in arc ion plating on surface properties of the TiN-coated high speed steel(SKH51) is presented in this paper. The surface roughness, micro-particle, micro-hardness, coated thickness, atomic distribution of TiN, and adhesion strength are measured fur various nitrogen gas pressures. It has been shown that the nitrogen gas pressure has a considerable effect on the surface roughness, adhesion strength, atomic distribution of TiN, and surface deposition of TiN of the high speed steels but that it has little influence on the micro-hardness and coated thickness.

  • This paper investigates the temperature history of slab mock-up specimens with various surface curing sheets, in order to determine a favorable surface curing method in hot weather condition. Test showed that insulating double bubble sheets+aluminum foil simultaneously on the upper section of a specimen prevented an increase of sudden temperature and a decrease of vaporization when placed during the hot weather condition. It also secured the high strength in early age. Therefore it is found that using the double bubble sheets+aluminum foil on concrete surface declined the plastic and drying shrinkage and inclined the early strength, thus improving the concrete quality.

  • We used polymers of alternating cationic and anionic nature to build up shells on fiber surfaces, strengthen the worn-out fibers and improve paper properties made from such fibers. OCC and ONP pulps were either dipped or salted out in the cationic polyallylamine, polyacrylamide and starch solutions. After centrifugal drying, these were followed by treatments in anionic polyacrylic acid, poly-acrylamide, and starch solutions, respectively. The shell-enhanced fibers were formed into handsheets and their physical properties evaluated. The results show that building multiple shells on worn-out fiber surfaces can strengthen the fibers and paper. The simpler and more practical impregnation-centrifuging treatment provided the desired effects, whereas salting out the polymers produced somewhat superior fibers. The latter process, were impractical, however. The first pair of polymeric shells imparted marked strength improvement, whereas later layers had diminishing efficacies. Overall, the methods can improve fiber quality, attaining paper strength requirements without resorting to expensive measures. Alternate cationic polymer and filler powders were also deposited on fiber surface based on the micriparticle system in an anticipation of stiffness gains. Platy minerals, such as montmorillonite, bentonite, sericite, clay and talc were added following cationic PAM. After dewatering of polymer-pigment shelled fiber of one to 3 pairs of layers, handsheets either calendered or uncalendered were evaluated. The results indicate that regardless of calendaring, stiffness of the handsheets did not improve appreciably while certain other strength properties showed gains. We also attempted the novel starch gel filler addition method wherein tapioca starch and filers (PCC, sericite or clay) were mixed at high solids content of 50% and cooked until gelatinized. The filled handsheets were dried under various conditions and then tested for their properties. Improvements in strengths of modified filled paper were observed.

  • Out of all the nondestructive test (NDT) methods, the pullout test is one of the most reliable techniques for estimating the strength of concrete under construction. However the pullout test inevitably produces significant surface damage because of the inherent test mechanism and costs too much for using measurement devices. In the view of construction engineers and inspectors, the main purpose of NDT methods for concrete is to verify whether the concrete strength of structure members exceeds the target strength or not. In this paper, a new pullout test method, which involves a pre-installed breaking bolt, with pre-determined breaking torques corresponding to the target strength of concrete, is introduced with related test data. The three types of test, the rebound hammer test, the pullout test, and the new pullout test with breaking bolt, were carried out on wall specimen with three types of concrete strengths. Our results show that concrete strength as evaluated by the pullout test with breaking bolt was similar with cylinder test results. Therefore it can be said that the new pullout test with breaking bolt is a useful method for checking the concrete strength without any surface damages in construction site.

  • Effects of the process variable in Condebelt press drying including drying temperature, pressure , drying time, and moisture content of the sheets on the paper properties were examined. The experiment was performed with a static rig and Korean OCC was used as raw material. Significant improvement in sheet density, compression strength, tensile strength, surface smoothness ,etc. was obtained when condebelt drying was applied. Control of pressure and inlet dryness was found to be two most critical variables in improving sheet properties.

  • Surface glossing and physical properties of exposed concrete varied with blast furnace slag content are dsicussed in this paper. According to experimental results, as the content of blast furnace slag increases, concrete gains high strength moderately at later stage and surface glossing increase. It shows that glossing decrease with age. Surface glossing shows high as W/B decreases and surface coating is applied. Concrete according to form type shows good results in surface glossing in order for acryl form, fancy form and steel form.

  • The primary objectives of this paper are to describe the buckling patterns and to determine the squash load of steel plate-concrete (SC) walls. The major variables in this study were the width-thickness (B/t) ratio and yield strength of surface steel plates. Six SC walls were tested, and the results include the maximum strength, buckling pattern of steel plates, strength of headed studs, and behavior of headed studs. Based on the test results, the effects of the B/t ratio on the compressive strength are also discussed. The paper also presents recommended effective length coefficients and discusses the effects of varying the yield strength of the steel plate, and the effects of headed studs on the performance of SC structures based on the test results and analysis.

  • Papers loaded with 10-40% $TiO_2$ by dry weight were calendered under the various combinations of calendering conditions such as calender type, linear pressure, and roll temperature. After being calendered, light scattering coefficient, surface roughness, density, and tensile strength of the papers were measured and the results were summerized as follows: 1. To increase the light scattering coefficient of $TiO_2$-highly-loaded paper further by calendering, the calender roll pressure and temperature should be kept low. Under these conditions, the physical strength of the paper was not significantly affected. 2. At low roll temperature, soft nip calender and machine calender type showed the same relationship between paper density and its roughness. At high roll temperature, soft nip calender type gave much lower roughness than machine calender type at the same density. 3. At high roll temperature of both calenders, the density as well as the tensile strength of the TiO$_2$-loaded paper was increased significantly.

  • In this paper, AC dielectric strength of the interface between Epoxy and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) was investigated. Air compress system was used to give pressure to the interface. Specimens were prepared in various ways to generate different surface conditions for each type of interface. Increasing interfacial pressure, decreasing surface roughness and spreading oil over surfaces improve the AC interfacial dielectric strength. Especially, the dielectric strength was saturated at certain interfacial pressure.
