  • In this paper, we proposed a 13.56 MHz wireless power transfer system using loop antennas with tunable impedance matching circuits. In general, a wireless power transfer system shows an impedance mismatching due to a reflected impedance, because a coupling coefficient is varied with respect to separation distance between two resonating antennas. The proposed system can compensate the effect of this impedance mismatch owing to tunable impedance matching circuits using varactor diodes. Therefore, transmission efficiency is enhanced, moreover, the center frequency of the system is not changed, regardless of separation distance between two antennas. In order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed system, a wireless power transfer system with tunable impedance matching circuits is designed and implemented, which has a pair of loop antennas with a dimension of $30\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ cm. The input return loss, coupling coefficient, efficiency, and input impedance variation with respect to a distance between loop antennas were measured. From measured results, the proposed system shows enhanced performances than the case of the general fixed $50\;{\Omega}$ impedance matching circuits. Therefore, we verified that the proposed wireless power transfer system using the proposed impedance matching scheme will be able to ensure robust operation even when the separation distance of antennas is varied.

  • In this paper, we propose a new design method to design a wireless power transfer system using loop antennas for consumer electronics. This method can simply design a wireless power transfer system only using measurements of coupling coefficients and simple equations of equivalent circuit model about loop antennas without complicated electromagnetic analysis. Using the proposed design method, a wireless power transfer system with a pair of loop antennas operating at the frequency of 13.56 MHz, which have a dimension of $50{\times}50\;cm^2$, is designed and implemented. The input return loss, coupling coefficient, efficiency, and input impedance variation with respect to a distance between loop antennas were measured. The proposed design method provides good agreements between measured and predicted results. Also, the wireless power transfer system with impedance matching circuits designed by the proposed design method shows two times higher efficiency characteristics than the case with the general $50\;{\Omega}$ impedance matching circuits. Therefore, we verified that our design method could be an effective tool to design a wireless power transfer system.

  • ELoran Systems can provide Position, Navigation, and Time services with comparable performance to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) as a back up or alternative system. High timing and navigation performance can be achieved by eLoran signals because eLoran receivers use "all-in-view" reception. This incorporates Time of Arrival (TOA) signals from all stations in the service range because each eLoran station is synchronized to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Transmission station information and the differential Loran correction data are transmitted via an additional Loran Data Channel (LDC) on the transmitted eLoran signal such that eLoran provides improved Position Navigation and Timing (PNT) over legacy Loran. In this paper, we propose a technique for adapting the delay time compensation values in eLoran timing receivers to provide precise time comparison. For this purpose, we have designed a system that measures time delay from the crossing point of the third cycle extracted from the current transformer at the end point of the transmitter. The receiver delay was measured by connecting an active H-field, an E-field and a passive loop antenna to a commercial eLoran timing receiver. The common-view time transfer technique using the calibrated eLoran timing receiver improved the eLoran transfer time. A eLoran timing receiver calibrated by this method can be utilized in the field for precise time comparison as a GNSS backup.

  • Under Resolution 122 (Rev. WRC-03), ITU-R is invited to study, as a matter of urgency, power limitations applicable for HAPS ground stations to facilitate sharing with space station receivers in the bands 47.2-47.5 GHz and 47.9-48.2 GHz. However, there have been no studies on this issue. Recommendation ITU-R SF.1481-1 which was developed during past study period, provides methodology and system characteristics for analyzing the sharing feasibility between systems in the FS using HAPS and systems in the FSS. System characteristics for a typical HAPS in the bands above are also given in Recommendation ITU-R F.1500. This paper provides the results on power limitations applicable for HAPS ground stations in accordance with Resolution 122 (Rev. WRC-03). As already shown in ITU-R Recommendation the results show that a sufficient separation distance is required for sharing between HAPS ground stations and FSS satellite systems. We obtain some examples of the sharing conditions considering reducing the power level of HAPS ground stations and using the antenna beam pattern with the low sidelobe to decrease the interference level affecting FSS satellite receiver.

  • In recent, there has been remarkable progress in the field of GPS applications. In a few years, an appreciable number of aircraft will adopt GPS as a landing guidance system because GPS is more economic, more reliable and more accurate than any other aviation systems. In this respect, we have performed several helicopter landing flight tests based on the real-time DGPS system made in SNUGL (Seoul National University GPS Laboratory). From the experimental results, we found several problems Which should be fixed to adopt DGPS as a aircraft landing guidance system. In this paper, we will introduce the problems found in tests and also suggest modifications to solve the problems. Our modifications can be classified into three parts. The first is about the attitude determination with single GPS antenna. The second deals with the cockpit display module. The display was devised to integrate the Instrument Landing System(ILS) with tunnel-the-sky using virtual reality. With the display, pilot can achieve more safe landings. The last part is the digital map. We inserted digital map into our system and put direction indicator on the map using position information from GPS. It is very useful for pilot to find airports even in bad weather. Using the newly designed DGPS landing system, we conducted flight test at Kimhae International Airport, Pusan, Korea. It was successful! Our system can also satisfy Category-I criterion for aircraft landing approach and determine attitude angle with a high level of reliability. It is supported by video materials.

  • In this paper, a low complexity fast Fourier transform(FFT) processor is proposed for multiple input multiple output(MIMO) systems. The IEEE 802.11ac standard has been adopted along with the demand for a system capable of high channel capacity and Gbps transmission in order to utilize various multimedia services using a wireless LAN. The proposed scalable FFT processor can support the variable length of 64, 128, 256, and 512 for 8x8 antenna configuration as specified in IEEE 802.11ac standard with MIMO-OFDM scheme. By reducing the required number of non-trivial multipliers with mixed-radix(MR) and multipath delay commutator(MDC) architecture, the complexity of the proposed FFT processor was dramatically decreased. Implementation results show that the proposed FFT processor can reduced the logic gate count by 50%, compared with the radix-2 SDF FFT processor. Also, compared with the 8-channel MR-2/2/2/4/2/4/2 MDC processor and 8-channel MR-2/2/2/8/8 MDC processor, it is shown that the gate count is reduced by 18% and 17% respectively.

  • Recently, the demands for the satellite broadband mobile communication services are increased. To provide these services, mobile satellite communication systems for the passengers or crews on the high-speed moving vehicles, are being developed for the last several years especially in the Europe and North America. However, most of these systems can provide only several hundred kbps of transmission rate and this is not enough performance to provide satellite internet service for the group users such as passengers on the high-speed train. Moreover, service availability with these systems is limited to be rather low because they don't have any countermeasure scheme for the N-LOS environment which happens often along the railway. This paper describes mobile broadband satellite communication system, which is on the development, to provide high data-rate internet services to the high-speed trains. This system is applied with the inter-networking scenarios of both satellite/terrestrial network and satellite/gap-filler network so that it can provide seamless service even in the train operating environment, and these inter-networking schemes result in high service availability. And this system also has the countermeasure schemes, such as upper layer FEC and antenna diversity, for the short fading which is occurred periodically on the railway due to the power supplying structures so that it can provide high speed internet services. Mobile DVB-S2 technology which is now being standardized in the DVB is used for the forward-link transmission and DVB-RCS for the return-link.

  • Radar systems are used in remote sensing mainly as space-borne, airborne and ground-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), scatterometer and Doppler radar. Those systems are composed of expensive equipments and require expertise and professional skills for operation. Because of the limitation in getting experiences of the radar and SAR systems and its operations in ordinary universities and institutions, it is difficult to learn and exercise essential principles of radar hardware which are essential to understand and develop new application fields. To overcome those difficulties, in this paper, we present the construction and experiment of a low-cost educational radar system based on the blueprints of the MIT Cantenna system. The radar system was operated in three modes. Firstly, the velocity of moving cars was measured in Doppler radar mode. Secondly, the range of two moving targets were measured in radar mode with range resolution. Lastly, 2D images were constructed in GB-SAR mode to enhance the azimuth resolution. Additionally, we simulated the SAR raw data to compare Deramp-FFT and ${\omega}-k$ algorithms and to analyze the effect of antenna positional error for SAR focusing. We expect the system can be further developed into a light-weight SAR system onboard a unmanned aerial vehicle by improving the system with higher sampling frequency, I/Q acquisition, and more stable circuit design.

  • In this paper, we report THz generation and detection characteristics investigated by InGaAs semiconductor epilayers, as results of a basic study obtained from the InGaAs-based THz transmitter/receiver (Tx/Rx). High-temperature and low-temperature (LT) grown InGaAs epilayers were prepared by the molecular beam epitaxy technique for the characterization of THz generation and detection, respectively, and the surface emission based on the photo-Dember effect was tried for THz generation. THz wave was generated by irradiation of a Ti:Sapphire fs pulse laser (60 ps/83 MHz), and a LT-GaAs Rx was used for the THz detection. The frequency band shown in the spectral amplitudes Fourier-transformed from the measured current signals was ranging in 0.5~2 THz, and the signal currents were exponentially increased with the Tx beam power. The THz detection characteristics of LT-InGaAs were investigated by using an Rx with dipole (5/20 ${\mu}m$) antenna, and the cutoff frequency was ~2 THz.

  • The advent of towed geo-electrical array surveying on water and land has resulted in datasets of magnitude approaching that of airborne electromagnetic surveying and most suited to 1D inversion. Robustness and complete automation is essential if processing and reliable interpretation of such data is to be viable. Sharp boundaries such as river beds and the top of saline aquifers must be resolved so use of smoothness constraints must be minimised. Suitable inversion algorithms must intelligently handle low signal-to-noise ratio data if conductive basement, that attenuates signal, is not to be misrepresented. A noise-level aware inversion algorithm that operates with one elastic thickness layer per electrode configuration has been coded. The noise-level aware inversion identifies if conductive basement has attenuated signal levels so that they are below noise level, and models conductive basement where appropriate. Layers in the initial models are distributed to span the effective depths of each of the geo-electric array quadrupoles. The algorithm works optimally on data collected using geo-electric arrays with an approximately exponential distribution of quadrupole effective depths. Inversion of data from arrays with linear electrodes, used to reduce contact resistance, and capacitive-line antennae is plausible. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm using theoretical examples and an example from a salt interception scheme on the Murray River, Australia.
