Purpose: This study aimed to assess the usefulness of machine learning and automation techniques to match pairs of panoramic radiographs for personal identification. Materials and Methods: Two hundred panoramic radiographs from 100 patients (50 males and 50 females) were randomly selected from a private radiological service database. Initially, 14 linear and angular measurements of the radiographs were made by an expert. Eight ratio indices derived from the original measurements were applied to a statistical algorithm to match radiographs from the same patients, simulating a semi-automated personal identification process. Subsequently, measurements were automatically generated using a deep neural network for image recognition, simulating a fully automated personal identification process. Results: Approximately 85% of the radiographs were correctly matched by the automated personal identification process. In a limited number of cases, the image recognition algorithm identified 2 potential matches for the same individual. No statistically significant differences were found between measurements performed by the expert on panoramic radiographs from the same patients. Conclusion: Personal identification might be performed with the aid of image recognition algorithms and machine learning techniques. This approach will likely facilitate the complex task of personal identification by performing an initial screening of radiographs and matching ante-mortem and post-mortem images from the same individuals.
Purpose: This study compared panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for evaluating the relationship between the maxillary sinus floor and the roots of maxillary molars. Materials and Methods: Paired panoramic radiographs and CBCT images from 97 subjects were analysed. This analysis classified 388 maxillary molars according to their relationship to the maxillary sinus floor on panoramic radiograph and CBCT. Correlations between these two radiographic techniques were examined. Results: Maxillary molar roots that were separate from the sinus floor showed the same classification in 100% of the cases when using these two imaging techniques. The corresponding percentage for such roots that were in contact with the sinus floor was 75%. When roots overlapped the maxillary sinus floor on panoramic radiographs, only 26.4% of maxillary first molars and 60.0% of second molars showed protrusion of roots into the sinus with CBCT. Conclusion : The results of the study suggest that roots projecting into the sinus on panoramic radiographs require a three-dimensional image in order to analyze the proximity of their apex to the sinus floor. A dedicated catadioptric panoramic lens with the rectilinear projection scheme is designed. The resolution is high enough to provide separate VGA quality images for the respective four directions and the image distortion is less than 0.5%.
The purpose of this experiments is to compare the vertical and horizontal magnification, and the distortion of the radiographic image according to the types of panoramic machines. Total 70 radiographs, 10 radiographs out of 7 panoramic machines respectively, were taken from the dry skull with metal balls in the periapical areas of the central incisor, the canine, the second premolar, and the second molar in the maxilla and the mandible. And the author evaluated the vertical and horizontal magnification degrees, and the distortion degrees of radiographic images obtained from each panoramic machine. The results were as follows: There were no significant differences in the vertical and horizontal magnification degrees on the various portions of the jaws (p> 0.05). But there were higher magnification degrees in the Panoura 10C, Panograph Ⅱ, and Veraview than those in other panoramic machines. The lowest average magnification degree was 20.27% vertically, 20.94% horizontally using the Panoradix. The highest average magnification degree was 27.64% vertically, 28.48% horizontally using the Panograph Ⅱ. The lowest distortion was shown using the Panoura 10C in the maxilla, but there was not statistically significant difference between the panoramic machines in the mandible (p>0.05). There were no differences in the vertical and horizontal magnification degrees according to the types of the rotation centers.

Purpose: Panoramic radiographs taken using conventional chin-support devices have often presented problems with positioning accuracy and reproducibility. The aim of this report was to propose a new bite block for panoramic radiographs of anterior edentulous patients that better addresses these two issues. Materials and Methods: A new panoramic radiography bite block similar to the bite block for dentulous patients was developed to enable proper positioning stability for edentulous patients. The new bite block was designed and implemented in light of previous studies. The height of the new bite block was 18 mm and to compensate for the horizontal edentulous space, its horizontal width was 7 mm. The panoramic radiographs using the new bite block were compared with those using the conventional chin-support device. Results: Panoramic radiographs taken with the new bite block showed better stability and bilateral symmetry than those taken with the conventional chin-support device. Patients also showed less movement and more stable positioning during panoramic radiography with the new bite block. Conclusion: Conventional errors in panoramic radiographs of edentulous patients could be caused by unreliability of the chin-support device. The newly proposed bite block for panoramic radiographs of edentulous patients showed better reliability. Further study is required to evaluate the image quality and reproducibility of images with the new bite block.
This paper presents a new matching scheme for creating a single panoramic image from a sequence of partially overlapping images of the same object or scene. This matching scheme is based directly on the searching algorithm, using a multiscale approach to the Hooke-Jeeves algorithm. Matching scheme evaluation was performed using simulated pattern images. The proposed matching scheme reveals good results and could be effectively applied to real ultrasound applications.
