Evaluation of the relationship between growing temperature and grain yield components across years in two japonica rice varieties in Korea

  • Rice grain yield is determined by crop dry matter production that is sensitive to temperature. Our objective was to determine whether the difference in temperature between years had an impact on the relationship between yield components and grain yield. Field experiments were conducted under machine transplanting cultivation by using yield data of two japonica rice varieties, Odaebyeo (early maturing) and Nampyeong (mid-late maturing), in 2013 to 2016 in Suwon, Korea. Plant height, dry weight, and yield components were examined by analysis of variance, correlation. The milled rice yield of the two varieties were the highest in 2016, however the lowest yields were observed in the different years. In 2016, Odaebyeo produced $0.96t\;ha^{-1}$ greater milled rice yield than in 2015, and Nampyeong produced $1.11t\;ha^{-1}$ greater yield than in 2013. The correlation analysis indicated that spikelet per panicle (R = 0.53) was associated with grain yield of Odaebyeo. In Nampyeong, biomass at heading date (R = 0.74), 1000-grain weight (R = 0.71), spikelet per panicle (R = 0.58), and panicle number per $m^2$ were associated with grain yield. Sink size (spikelet number per $m^2$) of the two varieties responded to accumulative temperature from transplanting to panicle initiation stage. In this experiment, optimal accumulative temperature before panicle initiation has effect on increased spikelet number and/or number of panicle that were mainly responsible for yield difference. Rice production research to increase grain yield should consider all yield components, but increased emphasis on biomass production before heading is also necessary as well as grain ripening conditions.

  • Rice panicle blast is one of the most serious diseases threatening stable rice production by causing severe damage to rice yields and quality. The disease is easy to occur under low air temperature and frequent heavy rainfall during the heading season of rice. In 2021, a rice panicle blast severely occurred in the Jeonbuk province of Korea. The incidence area of panicle blast accounted for 27.7% of the rice cultivation area of Jeonbuk province in 2021, which was 13.7-times higher than in 2019 and 2.6-times higher than in 2020. This study evaluated the incidence areas of rice panicle blast in each region of Jeonbuk province in 2021. The weather conditions during the heading season of rice, mainly cultivated rice cultivars, and the race diversity of the Jeonbuk isolates were also investigated. It will provide important information for the effective control of the rice panicle blast.

  • The use of liming material raised soil pH. This brought about a decrease in panicle number per hill. but an increase in the number of grains per panicle in pot cultured paddy production. It also improved grain maturity and thousand grain weight. .An effective control of such contradictory effect of liming material would be one way to increase the paddy production in actual field.

$CO_2$ 농도의 상승과 온난화환경이 수도의 생장, 물질생산 및 그 분배에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Elevated $CO_2$ and Global Warming on Growth Parameters, Biomass Production and Its Partitioning of Rice)

  • The influence of elevated CO2 and temperature on growth parameters, biomass production and its partitioning of rice (Oryza sativa L.cv. Chukwangbyeo) were investigated in the three experiments (1991-1993). Rice plants were grown from transplanting to harvest at either ambient(350ppm) or elevated CO2 concentrations (690 or 650ppm) in combination with either four or seven temperature regimes ranging form ambient temperature (AT) to AT plus 3$^{\circ}C$.From transplanting to panicle initiation, crop growth rate (CGR) was enhanced by up to 27% with elevated CO2 , primarily due to an an increase in leaf area index. although net assimilatiion rate was also greater at elevated CO2. The effect of elevated CO2 varied with temperature. During the reproductive phase, CGR declined linearly with increased temperature, and was greater at elevated CO2 . Elevated CO2 increased final crop biomass and panicle weight 30% respectively at AT(27.6$^{\circ}C$ : 1991) . However, there was no significant effect of elevated CO2 on panicle weight at AT plus 3$^{\circ}C$, where severe spikelet sterility occurred. There was no significant effect of elevated CO2 on panicle weight at AT plus 3$^{\circ}C$, where severe spikelet sterility occurred. There was also no effect of CO2 on biomass pratitioning into vegetative and reproductive organs (harvest index)) at AT, although higher temperature could affect that by inducing spikelet sterility. These results suggest that elevated CO2 could enhance rice producivity througth promoted growth and biomass production , but its positive effects may be less at higher temperatures.

중부 평야지에서 고품질 중생종 벼 '하이아미'의 재식밀도에 따른 수수 변화와 수량의 관계 (Relationship between Panicle Production and Yielding Traits Influenced by Transplanting Density in Mid-Maturing Quality Rice 'Haiami' in the Mid-Plain Area of Korea)

  • 중부 평야지에서 최고품질 중생종 벼 '하이아미'의 밀식에 의한 수수 증가 효과와 그에 따른 수량구성요소 및 수량성 변화의 관계를 분석하고, 완전미 수량에 대한 수량 관련요소의 상대적 중요도를 평가하기 위하여 국립식량과학원 중부작물부 수원 벼 재배시험 포장에서 2014~2015년 수행한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 단위 면적당 경수는 재식거리가 좁고 주당본수가 많을수록 증가하는 경향이었는데, 벼 생육이 진전됨에 따라 그 차이는 적어졌으나 이러한 경향은 수확기 수수까지 유지되었다. 2. 완전미 수량은 재식거리에 따라 2014년에는 유의한 차이가 없었고 2015년에는 $30{\times}18cm$에서만 감소하였으며, 두 해 모두 주당본수가 적을수록 높았다. 3. 단위 면적당 포기수와 주당본수 증가에 의하여 $m^2$당 수수는 많아졌으나, 밀식에 의한 수수 증가가 완전미 수량에는 영향을 미치지 않았다. 4. 단위 면적당 수수는 수당영화수와만 부의 상관을 나타내었고, 다른 수량구성요소 및 완전미 수량과 유의한 관계를 보이지 않았다. 5. 재식거리와 주당본수 조절에 의한 완전미 수량의 변화는 완전미 비율과는 관계가 없었고 쌀수량과 직선적인 정의 상관을 보였으며, 쌀수량은 $m^2$당 영화수 증가에 따라 향상되었는데, $m^2$당 영화수는 $m^2$당 수수보다 수당영화수 증가의 영향을 크게 받았으나 이들 두 요소가 함께 영향을 미쳤다. 6. 결론적으로 중부 평야지에서 하이아미를 보통기 보비 재배하는 경우, 완전미 수량은 밀식에 의한 수수 증가로 향상되지 않으며, $m^2$당 수수와 수당영화수의 적절한 조합에 의하여 $m^2$당 영화수를 증가시켜 쌀수량을 증대시킴으로써 높일 수 있는 것으로 분석되었다.

Variety and Seedling Age Affects Fine Rice Yield

  • The research was conducted with the aim of determining effects of seedling age on the yield of four fine rice varieties viz., Kalizura, Tulshimala, BRRI (Bang-ladesh Rice Research Institute)-37 and BRRI-38. The seedling of different ages such as 15, 25, 35 and 45 days were transplanted on the same day maintaining $25cm{\times}15cm$ spacing. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The yield and yield contributing characters were influenced by seedling age, variety and their interaction. BRRI-38 gave the highest number of effective tillers $hill^{-1}$, panicle length, total spikelets $panicle^{-1}$, grains $panicle^{-1}$, 1000-grains weight and grain yield. Likewise, yield and yield contributing characters were the highest in 35 days old seedling. On the other hand, the variety (BRRI-38) with the same age as of seedlings 35 days old seedlings was found superior to other interactions, but, in the production of grains $panicle^{-1}$ and 1000-grains weight there was no significant effect in this interaction. From the findings it may be inferred that BRRI-38 with 35 days old seedlings produced the highest grain yield.

Rice Bran Application under Deep Flooding can Control Weed and Increase Grain Yield in Organic Rice Culture

  • Rice bran application just after transplanting has been increasingly practiced as an herbicide-substitute for organic rice production in Korea. However, this practice is frequently reported to be unsatisfactory in weed suppression. An experiment with five treatments that combines flooding depth, rice bran application dose, and herbicide treatment was done in the paddy field to evaluate whether rice bran application under deep flooding can lead to a successful weed control in compensation for the single practice of rice bran application. Rice bran was broadcasted on the flood water surface just after deep flooding of 8 to 10cm that was started at seven days after transplanting. In the shallow flooding plot without herbicide six weed species were recorded: Monochoria vaginalis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Ludvigia prostrate, Cyperus amuricus, Aneima keisak, and Bidens tripartite. Among the first four dominant weed species, deep flooding significantly suppressed the occurrence of Echinochloa crus-galli and Cyperus amuricus while did not suppress the occurrence of Monochoria vaginalis and Ludwigia prostrate. On the contrary, rice bran application under deep flooding suppressed significantly Monochoria vaginalis and Ludwigia prostrate while didn't exert an additional suppression of Echinochloa crus-galli and Cyperus amuricus compared to deep flooding alone. Rice bran application and deep flooding suppressed complimentarily all the six weed species to a satisfactory extent except for Monochoria vaginalis of which suppression efficacy was 31.9%. Deep flooding reduced the panicle number substantially by inhibiting the tiller production, increased the spikelet number per panicle slightly, and leaded to a lower rice grain yield compared to shallow flooding with herbicide. Rice bran application under deep flooding mitigated the panicle reduction due to deep flooding, increased the spikelets per panicle significantly, and thus produced even higher grain yield in the rice bran application of 2000kg $ha^{-1}$ as compared to the shallow flooding treatment with herbicide. In conclusion, this practice applying rice bran under deep flooding would be promising to be incorporated as an integral practice for an organic rice farming system.

Effects of Panicle Position and Planting Density on the Physicochemical Properties of Starch in Panicle Number Type Rice

  • The tillering potential of panicle number type (PNT) rice greatly varies with planting density. Moreover, grain filling and ripening differ depending on the panicle position, which may further affect rice grain quality. The present study evaluated the grain quality of PNT rice sparsely planted to reduce production costs. The physicochemical characteristics of starch from the grains of PNT type rice 'Ilpum' planted at different densities (37, 50, 60, and 80 plants/3.3 m2) and at different positions of panicles (upper or lower on the culm) were determined. Overall, as the planting density decreased, the number of panicles increased but the starch content decreased, which further reduced the 1,000-grain weight. In particular, at the lowest density (37 plants/3.3 m2), protein content increased but particle size, enthalpy, and relative crystallinity decreased. The effects were more pronounced at lower than at upper panicle positions. These findings indicate that tillering potential differs with planting density, ultimately affecting the palatability of rice grains. Based on these findings, we propose restricting rice transplantation to a planting density of ≤37 plants/3.3 m2 to achieve the best quality of grains at lower costs and with less labor.

벼의 영화수와 생식 생장기 경엽중, 질소함량 및 비구조 탄수화물함량과의 관계 (Relationship of Spikelet Number with Nitrogen Content, Biomass, and Nonstructural Carbohydrate Accumulation During Reproductive Stage of Rice)

  • 일반계인 추청벼, 화성벼와 통일계인 남풍벼를 공시하여 질소(5수준), 분시방법(2수준) 및 유수형성기 차광처리(3수준)에 따른 영화수, 지경 분화수, 퇴화수 등 영화수 구성요소, 질소함량, 건물중, 비구조탄수화물 등을 조사하여 경엽의 질소보유량 및 건물중과 영화수 구성요소와의 관계, 그리고 영화형성 효율의 품종간 차이를 검토하였으며 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 단위면적당 1차지경수는 유수분화기와 그 후 15일 및 출수기, 3차지경수는 유수분화 후 15일 출수기의 경엽중의 질소보유량과 유의한 정의 상관을 나타내었다. 단위면적당 1차지 경수는 유수분화기의 경엽중, 2차지경수는 유수분화 후 15일의 경엽중과 유의한 정의 상관이 있었다. 2. 단위면적당 2차지경 퇴화수와 영화의 퇴화수는 유수분화 이후 15일간의 경중 증가량, 경중의 비구조탄수화물 증가량, 그리고 이때의 비구조탄수화물 함량과 유의한 부의 상관을 나타내었다. 3. 단위면적당 영화수는 출수기의 경엽중 질소보유량, 경업의 건물중과 유의한 정의 상관관계가 있었다. 4. 출수기 경엽중의 질소보유량당 영화수로 표현한 영화형성호율은 통일계인 남풍벼가 일반계인 화성벼와 추청벼보다 높았으며, 영화형성효율은 건물중이 증가함에 따라 감소하였다. 이 기간중 엽의 건물중과는 상관관계가 없었으나 경의 건물 중 증가에 따라서는 모든 품종에서 유의하게 감소하였다. 생식생장기간 동안의 건물 중 증가에 따른 영화형성효율은 구조 탄수화물의 증가에 따라서 감소되었으며, 출수기 경중의 저장 탄수화물 함량이 높은 경우 영화형성효율이 높아지는 경향이었다.

캄보디아 남부 천수답지역의 벼 집약관리재배 시스템(SRI)에 대한 현장 연구 (On-Farm Study of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) of Rainfed Lowland in Southern Cambodia)

  • 1. 본 연구는 저지대 천수답지역인 캄보디아 남부 따게오주에서2012~2013년에 2년간 벼 집약재배관리 시스템(System of Rice Intensification: SRI)에 대한 현장 연구 결과이다. 2. 천수답 지역에서 2년간 SRI는 FP 보다 화학비료 사용 없이 쌀 수량이 증가 되었다. 캄보디아 천수답 농가의 SRI은 어린모로 조기 이앙과 넓은 재식 밀도로 인해 이삭수 확보와 함께 지형에 따른 물 보유 능력과 오랜 기간 유기물 사용으로 수량이 증가된 것으로 판단된다. 3. 쌀 수량에 미치는 영향으로 총 질소 흡수량과 단위면적당 총 영화수는 ($r^2=0.95$) 정의 상관관계를 보였으며, 천수답 지역에서 물 관리 방법은 어렵지만 유기물을 장기간 사용한 지역 농가의 쌀 생산은 증가 되었다. 4. 최근 국내에서 일부 지역에서 소식재배가 확대되고 있는데 SRI원리를 소식재배와 연계한다면 보다 좋은 재배방법이 될 것으로 기대된다.
