This paper proposes a wireless LAN antenna system that tracks an object automatically by using image-based tracking. The proposed system consists of a camera and a pan-tilt unit in addition to a directional wireless LAN antenna. The camera and the directional antenna are set in same direction and they are set on the pan-tilt unit. A target object which has a wireless LAN receiver is tracked by using images captured by the camera. And the directional antenna faces in same direction as the camera by the pan-tilt unit. Therefore, the directional antenna keeps pointing the receiver, and a transmitting efficiency is improved. A result of a fundamental experiment shows that a receiver attached to a flying airship was tracked by a prototype of the proposed antenna system. The airship flied about, and the proposed antenna system was set on a roof of a building. The experimental result indicates an effectiveness of the proposed system compared to the conventional directional LAN antenna.
This paper presents a study of position tracing system for Underwater Vehicle Robots(UVR) that is inspecting an atomic furnace. This system development is the basic research for the purpose of position estimation of UVR and preventing that UVR crash into the wall of an atomic furnace. For this purpose, Pan/Tilt Unit that is attached Laser is pointing PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) Sensor which is stuck to the upper side of UVR. Through this action, we can find the Position of UVR. In this paper, we construct the system for aiming the laser pointer at PSD Sensor using pan/tilt and study the optimum algorithm for finding the optional position that is located at the space which is pointable area by Laser device.
In this paper, we studied for the real-time azimuthal measurement of HMD (Head Mounted Display) to control the tele-operated vision system on the mobile robot. In the preexistence tele-operated vision system, a joystick was used to control the pan-tilt unit of the remote camera system. To give the sense of presence to the tele-operator, we used a HMD to display the remote scene, measured the rotation angle of the HMD on a real time basis, and transmitted the measured rotation angles to the mobile robot controller to synchronize the pan-tilt angles of remote camera with the HMD. In this paper, we suggest an algorithm for the real-time estimation of the HMD rotation angles using feature points extraction from pc-camera image. The simple experiment is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility.
Demand for high-rising building has arisen. However, its maintenance is usually executed by labour. It could have a severe problem. We proposed a gondola robot to solve it. In this paper, we designed a height estimation sensor for this gondola. It is consist of pan-tilt unit, ARS sensor, and laser sensor. The pan-tilt unit keeps the laser sensor to indicate the gravity direction by referencing the ARS. The laser sensor's range is vertical distance from gondola to ground. However, if there is an obstacle under the gondola, the distance includes its height. To filter it out, we apply a Kalman filter for the height estimation. If the estimated height is changed extremely, the filter decides that there is an obstacle. Then, it remembers the height of obstacle. Other extreme changes of height estimations are reflected. The experimental results using the proposed sensor system show detail flow of the height estimation.
This paper presents a 3D object recognition method for generation of 3D environmental map or obstacle recognition of mobile robots. An active light source projects a stripe pattern of light onto the object surface, while the camera observes the projected pattern from its offset point. The system consists of a laser unit and a camera on a pan/tilt device. The line segment in 2D camera image implies an object surface plane. The scaling, filtering, edge extraction, object extraction and line thinning are used for the enhancement of the light stripe image. We can get faithful depth informations of the object surface from the line segment interpretation. The performance of the proposed method has demonstrated in detail through the experiments for varies type objects. Experimental results show that the method has a good position accuracy, effectively eliminates optical noises in the image, greatly reduces memory requirement, and also greatly cut down the image processing time for the 3D object recognition compared to the conventional object recognition.
In this paper describes the design and characteristic analysis of a novel 2-DOF(Degree of Freedom) motor. For multi DOF actuating, several numbers of motors have been used. But the using of normal motors they connected each other in single joint, have necessary to a several type of complex power transmission devices. The 2-DOF motor can drive pan, tilt motion in only one unit and it is not necessary to use additional gears and links parts. Therefore by the using of 2-DOF spherical motor ran eliminate; combined effects of inertia, backlash, non-linear friction, and elastic deformation of gears. The validity of the analysis is confirmed by 3D finite element method.
A human gaze detection and tracing method is importantly required for HMI(Human-Machine-Interface) like a Human-Serving robot. This paper proposed a novel three-dimension (3D) human gaze estimation method by using a face recognition, an orientation estimation and SVMs (Support Vector Machines). 2,400 images with the pan orientation range of $-90^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$ and tilt range of $-40^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}$ with intervals unit of $10^{\circ}$ were used. A stereo camera was used to obtain the global coordinate of the center point between eyes and Gabor filter banks of horizontal and vertical orientation with 4 scales were used to extract the facial features. The experiment result shows that the error rate of proposed method is much improved than Liddell's.
This paper describes a real-time control architecture for DUSAUV (Dual Use Semi-Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), which has been developed at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO), KORDI, for being a test-bed oj development of technologies for underwater navigation and manipulator operation. DUSAUV has three built-in computers, seven thrusters for 6 degree of freedom motion control, one 4-function electric manipulator, one pan/tilt unit for camera, one ballasting motor, built-in power source, and various sensors such as IMU, DVL, sonar, and so on. A supervisor control system for GUI and manipulator operation is mounted on the surface vessel and communicates with vehicle through a fiber optic link. Furthermore, QNX, one of real-time operating system, is ported on the built-in control and navigation computers of vehicle for real-time control purpose, while MicroSoft OS product is ported on the supervisor system for GUI programming convenience. A hierarchical control architecture which consist of three layers (application layer, real-time layer, and physical layer) has been developed for efficient control system of above complex underwater robotic system. The experimental results with implementation of the layered control architecture for various motion control of DUSAUV in a basin of KRISO is also provided.
This paper describes a distance measurement system with high accuracy that utilizes a stereo-based camera and a pan-tilt unit for automatically maintaining the positional relationship between a vessel and a target on the side of a facility at a close range. The measurement system offers an advantage in that it can measure the distance to a target while tracking it. In order to improve the ability to control the position of a vessel between it and a target while maintaining the distance especially at a close range, the accuracy of the measurement system has to be improved. The accuracy of the distance measured by our system is increased with revisions of the conclusively generated data of distance measurement. We verified the accuracy of our system from an experiment, which generated results that had an accuracy of 30 mm for distances in the range between 2-8 m.
Current methods for construction site modeling employ large, expensive laser range scanners that produce dense range point clouds of a scene from different perspectives. Days of skilled interpretation and of automatic segmentation may be required to convert the clouds to a finished CAD model. The dynamic nature of the construction environment requires that a real-time local area modeling system be capable of handling a rapidly changing and uncertain work environment. However, in practice, large, simple, and reasonably accurate embodying volumes are adequate feedback to an operator who, for instance, is attempting to place materials in the midst of obstacles with an occluded view. For real-time obstacle avoidance and automated equipment control functions, such volumes also facilitate computational tractability. In this research, a human operator's ability to quickly evaluate and associate objects in a scene is exploited. The operator directs a laser range finder mounted on a pan and tilt unit to collect range points on objects throughout the workspace. These groups of points form sparse range point clouds. These sparse clouds are then used to create geometric primitives for visualization and modeling purposes. Experimental results indicate that these models can be created rapidly and with sufficient accuracy for automated obstacle avoidance and equipment control functions.
