Fallow paddy areas have been increased due to the import of cheap agricultural product, and the unbalance between farming cost and rice price since 1990. In domestic, rice production control that decrease paddy field area has been introduced for the control of rice demand and supply and stabilization of rice price since 2003. Because of the desire of paddy field's owner to create benefit by using paddy for other object, fallow paddy would be continuously increased. In the other aspect, many people in the world is suffering from hunger because of the shortage of food. In case of Korea, continuous drought and flood damages will be potential concern of stable food supply. From this viewpoint, the increasing fallow paddy area needs to be protected from the devastation by weed breeding for the re-cultivation. In this study, fallow paddy managed with the shallow pools and shallows was selected fur monitoring and analyzing of water quality and plant body change. As the results, the managed fallow paddy found to be effective in the purification of water quality and the control of plant growth.
The objectives of this study were to develop a system linking hydrologic and water quality models considering the mechanisms of agricultural reservoir and paddy cultivation and to evaluate whether the developed system simulates hydrologic and water quality processes better than a hydrologic model that do not consider the mechanisms. The system consisted of Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) as a watershed model, Module-based hydrologic Analysis System for Agricultural watersheds (MASA) as reservoir water balance model, and Chemical, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management System-Paddy (CREAMS-PADDY) as a hydrologic and water quality model for paddy fields. This study carried out on the Seolseong-Cheon watershed in Icheon, and the water level and water quality had been monitored for two years at the outlet of the watershed. According to the results of this study, the performance of the simulation using HSPF-MASA-CREAMS-PADDY system was better than others, but they did not show a statistically significant difference. This seemed to be due to the uncertainty of the farming data and the water quality data of the reservoir. Therefore, if accurate input data for the system is obtained, HSPF-MASA-CREAMS-PADDY system could be used to model an agricultural watershed to obtain more realistic results. The results of this study could be utilized to the modeling of agricultural watersheds in Korea where paddy rice cultivation is dominant.
Field experimental study was performed to examine characteristics of nutrient export from paddy rice fields with irrigation practices. Experimental fields with surface-water and ground-water irrigation were monitored and analyzed during rice culture period. The water balance showed that outflow generally balanced the inflow showing that about half (58~68%) of total outflow was lost by surface drainage. Water and nutrient export are more in surface-water irrigation paddy than in ground-water irrigation paddy. The reasons might be more irrigation water available and easy to use in surface-water irrigation. If irrigation water reduced, it could result in reduction of nutrient export in paddy rice fields, which can save water and protect water quality. However, deviation from conventional standard practices might affect the rice yield and further investigations are necessary.
A Modified CREAMS model, CREAMS-PADDY was developed to simulate the hydrology and nutrient transport at an irrigated rice paddy. The hydrology at a paddy was simulated by a daily water balance routine which reflects daily inflow, outflow, and water level changes. The soil erosion was simulated using modified USLE. The nutrient transport for total nitrogen and phosphorus were depicted for various phases of each constitute such as extraction, percolation, mineralization, and plant uptakes. Field monitoring was conducted to investigate the water quality changes at a paddy field at three times a week during the growing season of 1996. The proposed model simulates the water quality of the paddy reasonably well, and is found to be applicable to field conditions.
To provide variation of water supply for instream flow from reservoirs with various magnifications of paddy irrigation area to watershed area, 8 reservoirs were selected to draw operation rule curve and to analyze water supplies from reservoirs. Reliability of 90% for supplying irrigation water from reservoir was able to maintain and instream flow water was able to be supplied only in the reservoir with magnification of paddy irrigation area to watershed area above 3. The more magnification of paddy irrigation area to watershed area increased, the more ratio of irrigation water to total water storage decreased, and the more ratio of instream flow water to total water storage increased. From the heightening 113 reservoirs in Korea, annual irrigation water was estimated to 1,146.05 $Mm^3$ in normal operation, 839.57 $Mm^3$ in withdrawal limited operation, and annual instream flow water was estimated to 149.68 $Mm^3$ in normal operation, 283.19 $Mm^3$ in withdrawal limited operation. It was concluded that withdrawal limited operation was followed to have the premise of saving irrigation water, more instream flow water was able to be supplied from reservoirs with high magnification of paddy irrigation area to watershed area.
Fallow paddy has been increased in disadvantageous farming condition area because of importation of foreign agricultural products, labor cost and the imbalance between farming cost and agricultural products price since 1990. The fallow paddy that has gradually increased needs to be prevented from the devastation by weed breeding for re-cultivation. In this study, two fallow paddies that manage with different water depth from the experimental field were selected for observation, and analysis of water quality, water balance and plant body change. The managed fallow paddy was more effective in water quality purification and plants growth control than non-managed fallow paddy. And the fallow paddy managed with a some degree water depth was the most effective field on weed control.
A study was performed to examine the effects of reclaimed-water irrigation on microorganism con-centration in ponded-water of paddy rice plots. Several treatments were used and each one was triplicated to evaluate the change of indicator microorganisms (total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms FC), and E. coli) concentrations in 2003 and 2004 growing seasons. Their concentrations increased significantly right after irrigation, but decreased about $45\%$ in 24 hours. It implies that agricultural activities such as plowing and fertilizing should be practiced one or two days after irrigation considering health-risks. Treatments with UV-disinfected water irrigation demonstrated significantly lower concentrations than others including control plots where natural surface water was irrigated. The monitoring results from actual paddy rice fields and experimental paddy plots showed that concentrations of indicator microorganisms ranged from $10^2\;to\;10^5$ MPN/100mL. A comprehensive assessment of existing agricultural practices and a thorough monitoring in the field as well as treatment-plots are recommended to make more realistic national guidelines more applicable. UV-disinfected water irrigation reduced microorganism concentrations in paddy fields down to below the concentration of conventional paddy rice culture, and is thought to be an effective and feasible measure fur agricultural reuse of secondary effluent.
The objective of this study was to develop a modified CREAMS model for paddy field conditions. The model simulates daily balance of water and nutrient from irrigated paddies using meteorological, irrigation, and agricultural management data. The model simulates daily evapotranspiration of paddy using Penman equation and determines daily flooding depth changes. Total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations within flooding water, surface runoff, and leaching water from a paddy field also can be simulated. Parameters of the model were calibrated using observed data of the Agricultural Experiment Station of the Seoul National University in Suwon Korea. The model was applied for the irrigation period of paddy field in Gicheon area when 1,234 mm annual rainfall was occurred. The simulated losses of the total nitrogen and total phosphorous were 11.27 kg/ha and 0.98 kg/ha, respectively. There was a good agreement between observed and simulated data. It was found that CREAMS-PADDY model was capable of predicting runoff and nutrient losses from irrigated paddy fields.
To evaluate nutrient dynamics with different fertilization in paddy field and develop water quality model, mass balance analysis was performed during growing season of 2001-2002 in field experimental plots irrigated with groundwater. As a result of water balance analysis, most of outflow was surface drainage as about half of total outflow and about 500mm was lost by evapotranspiration. The water budget was well balanced. The runoff from paddy field was influenced by rainfall and forced drain. Especially runoff during early cultural periods more depends on the forced drain. As a result of mass balance analysis, most of nutrient was input by fertilization and lost by plant uptake. Significant amount of nitrogen were supplied by precipitation and input from upper paddy field, comprising 12%∼28% of total inflow. Nutrient loading by surface drainage was occurred showing about 15%∼29% for T-N and 6%∼13% for T-P. The response of rice yield with different fertilization was not significant in this study. Water quality model for paddy field developed using Dirac delta function and continuous source was calibrated and validated to surface water quality monitoring data. It demonstrates good agreement between observed and simulated. The nutrient concentration of surface water at paddy field was significantly influenced by fertilization. During early cultural periods when significant amount of fertilizer was applied, surface drainage from paddy field can cause serious water quality problem. Therefore, reducing surface drainage during fertilization period can reduce nutrient loading from paddy fields. Shallow irrigation, raising the weir height in diked rice fields, and minimizing forced surface drainage are suggested to reduce surface drainage outflow.
Model for estimating daily paddy water requirements was developed to simulate daily streamflow in upstream and downstream. Evapotranspiration in paddy fields was estimated using modified Penman equation. Daily water requirements in paddy fields were calculated from multiplication of paddy area to ponding depth decreased for one day. And model was constructed with a system form user-friendly and almost completely using controls of image, grid, and etc. in Visual Basic 6.0. The developed model was applied to estimate daily agricultural water requirements at 12 small watersheds during 20 years from 1983 to 2002 with paddy field areas of $3,332{\sim}26,422ha$ in small watersheds, and with agricultural water requirements of $37.22{\sim}294.53mcm$ on yearly average.
