  • A sphere-packing problem is to find an arrangement of the spheres to fill as large area of the given space as possible, and covering problems are optimization problems which are dual problems to the packing problems. We generalize the concepts of the weight and the Hamming distance for a binary code to those of Boolean algebra. In this paper, we define a weight and a distance on a Boolean algebra and research some properties of the weight and the distance. Also, we prove the notions of the sphere-packing bound and the Gilbert-Varshamov bound on Boolean algebra.

  • Optimum packing of aggregate is an important aspect of mixture design, since porosity may be reduced and strength improved. It may also cause a reduction in paste content and is thus of economic relevance too. Several mathematic packing models have been developed in the literature for optimization of mixture design. However in this study, numerical simulation will be used as the main tool for this purpose. A basic, simple theoretical model is used for approximate assessment of mixture optimization. Calculation and simulation will start from a bimodal mixture that is based on the mono-sized packing experiences. Tri-modal and multi-sized particle packing will then be discussed to find the optimum mixture. This study will demonstrate that computer simulation is a good alternative for mixture design and optimization when appropriate particle shapes are selected. Although primarily focusing on aggregate, optimization of blends of Portland cement and mineral admixtures could basically be approached in a similar way.

  • Purpose: Closed reduction and nasal packings for 3-7 days is usual procedures in managing nasal bone fracture. Most patients experience several discomfort owing to lack of nasal breathing. There are many reports concerning how to reduce patient's discomforts or complications. But it is obvious that the duration of nasal packing is 3-7 days. The aim of this study is evaluate the effect of half day nasal packing in results of nasal bone fracture. Methods: The study was performed on 97 nasal bone fracture patients who had simple nasal bone fractures from January to June 2012. The incidence, cause, patient's discomfort and satisfaction with half day nasal packing are analyzed according to patient's medical records and questionnaire at each nasal packing removal, postoperative 4 weeks. Results: Young male patients, especially the teenagers and the twenties were the common age group, and physical violence was most common cause of injury. A total of 78 out of 97 patients were male. In 92 cases, closed reduction were applied. Approximately, 87% of the patients were satisfied with the outcomes. Conclusion: Half day nasal packing is considered as an effective method to minimize patient's discomfort owing to prolonged absence of nasal breathing with maintenance of stability.

  • The modern logistics has tried not only to convert the conventional packing system into unit load system using pallet but also to enhance the fitness between packing facilities and transport modes. This is based on the goal to reduce total logistics cost using logistics efficiency. Because the packing unit can affect on both loading rate and loading facilities, the basic form of packing unit is very important to the unit load system. In Korea, the standardization of logistics has been centered on pallet, and the basic condition will be continued except of the variety of standardized pallet form. Because of this, to enhance the standardization of pallet, it is necessary to develop new standard size and form of pallet. The object of this study is to develop a new method of collecting the effectiveness of standardized packing module. The new method is based on measure of effectiveness (MOE) which can be developed by expert survey. This study has originality from the fact that the collecting method for effectiveness of pallet standardization has not been developed up to now.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influences of environmental condition in storage room, moisture content and packing weight of leaf on the carbonization of processed flue-cured leaf tobacco, and find out a regression model able to pre-estimate the degree of carbonization. The influence of temperature and humidity in storage room on the carbonization was high,, while that of packing weight was relatively low, However, high moisture content and packing weight of leaf accelerated the carbonization under the high temperature and humidity condition. Thus the leaf tobacco under the condition of 4$0^{\circ}C$, 7$0^{\circ}C$ R.H. in storage room, 16% moisture content and 286 kg/box of packing weight could be carbonized within one month. The pH, total sugar content, lightness(L) and yellowness(b) of leaf were closely related to carbonization of leaf during storage. There were significant regression and yellowness of leaf. It is considered that the certification and/or pre-estimation of carbonization during storage may be possible by applying the regression equation.

  • Purpose: Packing the nose is a common procedure after the closed reduction of a nasal bone fracture to prevent postoperative complications, such as bleeding and adhesion formation as well as to stabilize the framework of the nasal bone. On the other hand, it is difficult for a patient to endure nasal packing because of breathing difficulties, headaches, chest discomfort, insomnia, general weakness and hypoxia. This study examined the availability of a bronchodilator to improve the decreased oxygen saturation and postoperative symptoms on nasal packing. Methods: From February, 2010 to July, 2010, a prospective randomized comparison of the incidence of a range of postoperative signs and symptoms was conducted on 60 patients, who did (n=30) and did not (n=30) undergo bronchodilator infusion (aminophylline 250 mg/10 mL + normal saline 100 mL IV qd) following nasal packing. The postoperative symptoms and oxygen saturation in the two groups were compared. Results: Patients who had infused the bronchodilator showed improved oxygen saturation. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences in the postoperative uncomfortable symptoms (dyspnea, headache, chest discomfort, insomnia, general weakness) between the two groups. Conclusion: A bronchodilator after nasal packing improves oxygen saturation by dilating the airway tract but it cannot reduce the uncomfortable symptoms caused by nasal obstruction. Overall, the bronchodilator is a useful medication for improving the level of oxygen saturation.

  • In this country, mackerel landing, sorting, and packing are mostly performed manually, which is time consuming and labor intensive. An unloading automation system saves time and labor by automating the landing, sorting, and packing processes. Casers are devices for manufacturing packing boxes for fish used by unloading automation systems. The caser design in this study is for mackerel packing boxes. This caser makes a packing box based on a press using the caser's slide crank. When the caser makes a packing box, the manufacturing sequence is determined by the caser's production guide and assisting rod. The caser design in this study is simulated using a multi-body dynamics program. The simulation is used to analyze the caser and to visualize the box-making sequence.

  • In this study, visual simulations were performed on the packing behaviors of various press scraps. The packing states after the initial charging step were quantitatively compared. The comparison targets were 300mm cubic press scraps, customized cubic press scraps, customized octagonal prism press scraps and customized cylinder press scraps. The customized press scraps were designed in customized sizes for furnaces with melting capacities of 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6t/h. The packing states such as the initial charging number, the additional charging weight percentage, the packing density and the gap volume percentage were comparatively evaluated.

  • In this work, we confirm a weak version of a conjecture proposed by Hong Wang. The ideal of the work comes from the tree packing conjecture made by Gyárfás and Lehel. Bollobás confirms the tree packing conjecture for many small tree, who showed that one can pack T1, T2, …, $T_{n/\sqrt{2}}$ into Kn and that a better bound would follow from a famous conjecture of Erdős. In a similar direction, Hobbs, Bourgeois and Kasiraj made the following conjecture: Any sequence of trees T1, T2, …, Tn, with Ti having order i, can be packed into Kn-1,[n/2]. Further Hobbs, Bourgeois and Kasiraj [3] proved that any two trees can be packed into a complete bipartite graph Kn-1,[n/2]. Motivated by the result, Hong Wang propose the conjecture: For each k-partite tree T(𝕏) of order n, there is a restrained packing of two copies of T(𝕏) into a complete k-partite graph Bn+m(𝕐), where $m={\lfloor}{\frac{k}{2}}{\rfloor}$. Hong Wong [4] confirmed this conjecture for k = 2. In this paper, we prove a weak version of this conjecture.

  • Injection molding operation consists of phases of filling, packing, and cooling. The highest cavity pressure is involved in the packing phase among the operation phases. Thus the cavity pressure largely depends upon velocity to pressure (v/p) switchover timing and magnitude of packing pressure. Developed cavity pressure is directly related to stress concentration in the cavity of mold and it may cause a crack in the mold. Consequently control of cavity pressure is considered very important. In this study, cavity pressure was analyzed in terms of v/p switchover timing and packing pressure through computer simulation and experiment. Cavity pressure was increased as the v/p switchover timing was delayed. Residual pressure after cooling phase was observed when the v/p switchover timing was late, which was due to increased pressurizing time for long filling phase. Cavity pressure was increased proportionally with the packing pressure. Residual pressure after cooling phase was also observed, and it was increased with increasing packing pressure. High cavity pressure and residual pressure have been observed at late v/p switchover and high packing pressure. Compared with simulation and experimental results, the profiles of pressures were very similar however simulation could not predict residual pressure. Packing condition was important for the control of cavity pressure and the optimum condition could be set up using CAE analysis.
