  • When particles are dissolved in solution, they have different zeta-potentials depending on pH. Zeta-potential has an influence on particle separation, which can control particle size. And the size of $WO_3$ particle affects the sensitivity of $WO_3$ sensor for detecting NO gas. Therefore we study influence of pH on NO-sensing $WO_3$ gas sensor fabricated by Sol-Coprecipitation method. As pH increases from 2 to 7, dynamic mobility of $WO_3$ precursor was increased. When pH was 7, it showed the largest distribution separation. It means when pH is 7, we can make $WO_3$ powder which has smaller particle size. And it is confirmed by particle size analysis of $WO_3$ powder, X-ray diffration result of $WO_3$ sensing layer and surface morphology. It also affect NO sensing characteristics of $WO_3$ gas sensor. The sensing film synthesized at pH 7 showed the largest sensitivity.

  • The diffusion of hydrogen ions into a sensing membrane causes the output voltage of pH-ISFET to vary with time, which might be considered to be drift in this sensor. We tried to deposit ultra-thin film for minimizing tile drift that has been considered to be main obstacle for putting pH-ISFET to practical use. In this paper, tantalum pentoxide, known as a good pH sensing membrane, was formed to about $70{\AA}$ thick by sol-gel method on $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiO_{2}$-gate of pH-ISFET. The fabricated $Ta_{2}O_{5}$-gate pH-ISFET showed good sensitivity(about 59mV/ pH) and good lineality in the range of pH $3{\sim}11$, and had relatively small average pH drift of about 0.06 pH/day.

  • An ultraviolet pulsed laser ablation of polyimide film coated with platinum has been used to enhance the sensitivity for the application as an electrochemical biosensor. Densely packed cones are formed on polyimide surface after UV irradiation which results in increase of surface area. In order to apply the sensitivity improvement of laser ablated polyimide film electrodes, the glucose oxidase modified biosensor was fabricated by using an encapsulation in the gel matrix through sol-gel transition of tetraethoxysliane on the surface of laser ablated polyimide film. The optimum conditions for glucose determination have been characterized with respect to the applied potential and pH. The linear range and detection limit of glucose detection were from 2.0 mM to 18.0 mM and 0.18 mM, respectively. The sensitivity of glucose biosensors fabricated with laser ablated polyimide film is about three times higher than that of plain polyimide film due to increase in surface area by laser ablation.

  • Piezoelectric or magnetostrictive materials, known as smart materials, have been researched widely for sensors or actuators in micro system technology. In our research, thick sol-gel lead zirconate titanate(Pb(Zr$\sub$1-x/Ti$\sub$x/)O$_3$) films were fabricated and their characteristics were investigated f3r angular rate sensor applications. The thickness of the PZT films is 1.5${\mu}$m, which is required by a vibration angular rate sensor for a good actuation and sensing. The remnant polarization of the PZT flms is 12.0 ${\mu}$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The electromechanical constants of PZT thin film showed the value of susceptance(B) of 4800${\mu}$ s at capacitance of 790pF. The PZT films were applied to the vibration angular rate sensor structure and the vibration of 1.78 ${\mu}$m in amplitude at the resonant frequency of 35.8㎑ was obtained by driving voltage of 5V$\sub$p-p/ of bulk piezoelectric materials with out of phase signal through voltage and inverting amplifier.

  • An ISFET urea sensor was fabricated by immobilizing the urease using photosensitive polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol)-SbQ on the H$^+$ sensing $Si_3$$N_4$ thin film of pH-ISFET. The sensor could determine the urea concentration in the range of 1∼50 mg/dl with fast response and good repeatability. For its application to clinical analysis, the interferences of the various materials which cause inhibition in urease catalytic reactions in blood was investigated. The results of the urea measurements in blood plasma using the ISFET urea sensor were compared with these of conventional spectrophotometric method.

  • A structure of a glass electrode-type pH sensor for measuring any concentration of $H^+$ in an aqueous solution was embodied with bulk micromachining technology. Two open well structures were formed, and a reference electrode was secured by the Ag/AgCl thin film in the sloped side of the etched structure. A sensitive membrane of an indicator electrode for generating a potential by an exchange reaction to $H^+$ was made with a glass containing Na 20% or more finely so that its thickness might be $100{\mu}m$ or so, and then it was bonded to one pyramidal structure. A liquid junction for a current path was formed by filling an agar in the anisotropically etched part of the Si wafer, which had a size of $50{\mu}m{\times}50{\mu}m$, and then bonded it to the other. After complete fabrication of each part, it was filled with a 2M KCl reference solution and encapsulated the sensor structure with a cold expoxy. The potential value of fabricated pH sensor was about 90mV/pH in the standard pH solutions.

  • This study proposes a pH-dissolved-oxygen monitoring system using 8-HydroxyPyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid Trisodium Salt (HPTS) and tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)Ruthenium(II) chloride (Rudpp). Commercial water-quality sensors are electrochemical devices that require frequent calibration and cleaning, are subject to high maintenance costs, and have difficulties conducting measurements in real-time. The proposed pH-dissolved-oxygen monitoring system selects a thin-film sensing layer to measure the change in fluorescence intensity. This change in fluorescence intensity is based on reactions with hydrogen ions in an aqueous solution at a given pH and specific amount of dissolved oxygen. The change in fluorescence intensity is then measured using light-emitting diodes and photodiodes in response to HPTS and Rudpp. This method enables the development of a relatively small, inexpensive, and real-time measureable water-quality measurement system.

  • The gas response characteristic toward C2H5OH has been demonstrated in terms of copper-vacancy concentration, hole density, and microstructural factors for undoped/Li(I)-doped CuO thin films prepared by sol-gel method. For the films, both concentrations of intrinsic copper vacancies and electronic holes decrease with increasing calcination temperature from 400 to 500 to 600 ℃. Li(I) doping into CuO leads to the reduction of copper-vacancy concentration and the enhancement of hole density. The increase of calcination temperature or Li(I) doping concentration in the film increases both optical band gap energy and Cu2p binding energy, which are characterized by UV-vis-NIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The overall hole density of the film is determined by the offset effect of intrinsic and extrinsic hole densities, which depend on the calcination temperature and the Li(I) doping amount, respectively. The apparent resistance of the film is determined by the concentration of the structural defects such as copper vacancies, Li(I) dopants, and grain boundaries, as well as by the hole density. As a result, it is found that the gas response value of the film sensor is directly proportional to the apparent sensor resistance.

  • Recently, dense sensor instrumentation for structural health monitoring has motivated the need for novel passive wireless sensors that do not require a portable power source, such as batteries. Using a layer-by-layer self-assembly process, nano-structured multifunctional carbon nanotube-based thin film sensors of controlled morphology are fabricated. Through judicious selection of polyelectrolytic constituents, specific sensing transduction mechanisms can be encoded within these homogenous thin films. In this study, the thin films are specifically designed to change electrical properties to strain and pH stimulus. Validation of wireless communications is performed using traditional magnetic coil antennas of various turns for passive RFID (radio frequency identification) applications. Preliminary experimental results shown in this study have identified characteristic frequency and bandwidth changes in tandem with varying strain and pH, respectively. Finally, ongoing research is presented on the use of gold nanocolloids and carbon nanotubes during layer-by-layer assembly to fabricate highly conductive coil antennas for wireless communications.

  • Hydrogen (H2) gas is widely preferred for use as a renewable energy source owing to its characteristics such as environmental friendliness and a high energy density. However, H2 can easily reverse or explode due to minor external factors. Therefore, H2 gas monitoring is crucial, especially when the H2 concentration is close to the lower explosive limit. In this study, metal oxide materials and their p-n heterojunctions were synthesized by a hydrothermal-assisted dip-coating method. The synthesized thin films were used as sensing materials for H2 gas. When the H2 concentration was varied, all metal oxide materials exhibited different gas sensitivities. The performance of the metal oxide gas sensor was analyzed to identify parameters that could improve the performance, such as the choice of the metal oxide material, effect of the p-n heterojunctions, and operating temperature conditions of the gas sensor. The experimental results demonstrated that a CuO/ZnO gas sensor with a p-n heterojunction exhibited a high sensitivity and fast response time (134.9% and 8 s, respectively) to 5% H2 gas at an operating temperature of 300℃.
