  • $[^{13}N]$Ammonia or $[^{13}N]NH_3$ is one of the most widely used PET tracer for the measurement of MBF. To produce $[^{13}N]NH_3$, devarda's alloy which contains aluminum, copper and zinc is used for the purpose of reduction from $^{13}N$-nitrate/nitrite to $[^{13}N]NH_3$. Since aluminum has neurotoxicity and renal toxicity, the amount of it should be carefully limited for the administration to the human body. Although USP and EP provide a way to identify the aluminum ion concentration, there are some difficulties to perform. Therefore, we tried to develop the modified method for verifying aluminum concentration of test solution. We compared color between test and standard solutions using chrome azurol S in pH 4.6 acetate buffer. We also tested color change of test and standard solutions according to pH, amounts and the order of reagent and time difference These results demonstrated that the color change of the solution can reflect quantitatively measure aluminum ion concentration. We hope the method is to be used effectively and practically in many sites where $[^{13}N]NH_3$ is produced.

  • This study was carried out to investigate relationships between atmospheric $SO_2$ concentration and both soluble sulphur contents in the tree leaves and bark pH to test the possibility of using them as bioindicators for air pollution. Mt. Kwanak, Mt. Nam, Mt. Bukhan (located in Seoul) and Mt. Paldal (located in Suwon, Kyonggi-do) as polluted areas and Pyongchang, Kwangwon-do as an unpolluted area were selected for this study. Soluble sulphur contents in the leaves and hark pH of two tree species (Pines densiflora S. et Z. and Quercus mongolica Fisch.) were analyzed in May, August, and October, 1990 by $BaSO_4$ precipitation method and pH measurement, respectively. In both species, concentration of soluble sulphur in the leaves increased with increasing concentration of atmospheric $SO_2$ (correlation coefficient : 0.52). Soluble sulphur contents in the 2-year-old needles of Pines densiflora (0.170%) and current year leaves of Quercus mongolica (0.081%) in Mt. Nam in the center of Seoul were higher than those in unpolluted Pyongchang area (0.023% and 0.034%, respectively). Bark pH decreased with increasing atmospheric $SO_2$ concentration (correlation coefficient : -0.52). Bark pH of P. densiflora (pH 3.42) and Q. mongolica (pH 3.63) in Mt. Nam were lower than those in Pyongchang area (pH 3.94 and pH 4.93, respectively). Both soluble S content in the leaves and bark pH were recognized as suitable bioindicators for air pollution by $SO_2$. Especially, bark pH showed more sensitive response to air pollution by $SO_2$ than soluble S concentration in the leaves. The lowest concentration of soluble sulphur and the highest bark pH in August were considered to be due to heavy rain during the rainy season. Soluble S content in the leaves and bark pH were not significantly different at 5% level between the two species in polluted areas.

  • The measurement and monitoring of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) play an important role in the planning and operation of wastewater treatment plants. The most basic method for determining biochemical oxygen demand is direct measurement. However, this method is both expensive and takes a long time. A five-day period is required to determine the biochemical oxygen demand. This study has been carried out in a wastewater treatment plant in Turkey (Hurma WWTP) in order to estimate the biochemical oxygen demand a shorter time and with a lower cost. Estimation was performed using artificial neural network (ANN) method. There are three different methods in the training of artificial neural networks, respectively, multi-layered (ML-ANN), teaching learning based algorithm (TLBO-ANN) and artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC-ANN). The input flow (Q), wastewater temperature (t), pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended sediment (SS), total phosphorus (tP), total nitrogen (tN), and electrical conductivity of wastewater (EC) are used as the input parameters to estimate the BOD. The root mean squared error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) values were used in evaluating performance criteria for each model. As a result of the general evaluation, the ML-ANN method provided the best estimation results both training and test series with 0.8924 and 0.8442 determination coefficient, respectively.

  • The purpose of this work was to investigate the relationships between acrylamide degradation by Pseudomonas sp. JK-7 and several relevant physicochemical environment parameters. In initial experiments, the bacterial culture, strain JK-7 isolated from paddy soil sample was developed to grow aerobically with acrylamide as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. The bacterium was identified as genus Pseudomonas in the basis of use BIOLOG test, and designated as Pseudomunas sp. JK-7. Strain JK-7 could degrade 50 mM acrylamide completely within 72 hours of incubation. Major intermediates resulting from acrylamide degradation were not detected with the HPLC methodology except acrylic acid which appeared to accumulate transiently in the growth medium. The pH increased from 7.0 to 8.7 with complete degradation of the initial 50 mM acrylamide within 72 hours of incubation. pH control in the range of 5 to 9 influenced the growth of JK-7 and acrylamide degradation, whereas it was not examined the growth and degradation at pH 3 or pH 11, respectively. The effect of supplemented carbons (e.g., glucose, fructose, citrate, succinate) on the acrylamide degradation by the test culture of JK-7 was evaluated. The results indicated that the addition of carbons accelerated the bacterial growth and acrylamide degradation compared to those in the absence of supplemented carbons. The effect of supplemented nitrogens on the degradation was monitored. Increasing concentrations of yeast extract resulted in higher growth yield, based on the turbidity measurement, and complete degradation of acrylamide. However, acrylamide degradation was essentially uninfluenced by the addition of $(NH_{4})_{2}SO_{4}$, $NH_4Cl$ or urea. Addition of $AgNO_3$, $CuSO_4$ or $HgCl_2$ except $ZnSO_4$ in the test culture inhibited the degradation of acrylamide and growth of JK-7.

  • Objectives: Based on the amount of amalgam, the duration of exposure, and the water pH, this study aims to investigate the change patterns in the mercury concentrations in water after amalgams have been introduced into sewage water. It is expected that the study results will be useful in improving the system for regulating the amount of mercury that is introduced into the environment. Methods: During the study, a glass test-tube with a cap was washed and disinfected using the glass laboratory device washing method. Then, 1, 2, 3, and 4 tabs were placed into a 10 mL pH 4 solution and 10 mL pH 7 distilled water. Each specimen was prepared in duplicate. The mean of the two mercury concentrations was used as the representative value, and the mercury concentration was measured using a mercury measurement device (DMA-80, Milestone, Italy) a total of eight times at one-week intervals. Results: The results show that the lower was the pH, the higher was the amount of amalgam. Also the longer was the duration, the more significant was the increase of mercury concentration in the water. Conclusions: Dental clinics are collected separately from dental clinics that used them. Given this, dental clinics in Korea must have the necessary facilities to separately collect mercury at their level. In addition, proper disposal systems and social attention to the proper management of dental wastes are required to prevent environmental pollution from mercury.

  • The study was carried out to evaluate characteristics of inorganic phosphate fractions in cultivating soil with paper mill sludge comport(PMSC). The experiment were conducted in cultivating corn by a pot test. The place of the pot test was a plastic house. The pot size was 1/5000a and PMSC was added at rates of 0, 30, and 100 Mg/ha. The pot experiment was divided to two treatments, one in which corn was cultivated and the other which was not. The items of measurement was pH and inorganic phosphate fractions which were determined for the pot tests for 80 days. The results can be concluded as follows, pH increased depending on the higher rates of PMSC application to the soil during the Pot tests, because calcium content was high and contents of nutrient were high. When the application rates of PMSC were increased, Saloid-P and Fe-P decreased, while Al-P and Ca-P in soil increased during the pot tests. According to the increase of PMSC application rates, the growth and the yield of com significantly increased Such results seem to be associated with the higher nutrient level from PMSC application. Although uptake of phosphorus in corn decreased in the corn with increased application of the PMSC, phosphate deficiency didn't appear in the pot test.

  • This paper describes the design method of a magnetic system to maximize the magnetic flux leakage (MFL) in a non-destructive testing (NDT) system. The defect signals in a MFL type NDT system mainly depend on the change of the magnetic leakage flux in the region of a defect. The characteristics of the B-H curves are analysed and a design method to define the operating point on B-H curves for maximum leakage is performed. The computed MFL signal by a nonlinear finite element method is verified by measurement using Hall sensors mounted on the 6 legs PIG, the traveling detector unit in gas pipe, in an 8 inch test tube with defects. The rhombic defects could be successfully identified from the defect signals.

  • A method is proposed in this paper to determine the harmonic contributions of a customer at the point of common coupling. The method can quantify customer and utility responsibilities for limit violations caused by either harmonic source changes or harmonic impedance changes. It can be implemented in current power quality monitors and digital revenue meters. The method is comparison of measurement phase angles between harmonic voltage and current. The proposed method has been applied to the test system. The study results have indicated the accuracy of harmonic injection and emission for customer and utility.
