An increasing global population requires a greater food supply, and accordingly there is demand for enhanced production of rice, as a major crop plant that covers half of the world's population. Rice production in arid area is extremely difficult due to poor soil fertility, salinity, deficit of irrigation water, and weather conditions. The aim of the present study was to determine whether various fertilization recipes could provide a countermeasure to allow rice production while also providing soil amendment such as soil pH adjustment. The study was conducted at an experimental field of the United Arab-Emirates (UAE) from January to April, 2022. Rice seedlings (cv. Asemi, alkaline-resistant) were transplanted in plastic containers, and different types of water and nutrient managements were employed as follows: water management (flooding and aerobic for NPKs treatment group) and nutrient management (NPKs, slow release fertilizers [SRFs] and SRFs + NPK-1 treatment groups with flooding). Water and nutrient management did not show any effect on soil pH adjustment. Rice growth was significantly enhanced in the flooding compared to the aerobic condition, whereas the effect of nutrient management clearly differed among the treatment groups, with SRFs + NPK-1 showing the best results followed by SRFs and NPKs. Most of the fertilization groups markedly accumulated soluble sugars in the shoots and grains of rice plants, but concomitantly a decrease in the roots. Overall, the level of starch showed a tendency of relatively slight perturbation by fertilization. Taken together, the results indicate that soil physical structure should be preferentially amended to find the key for suitable rice production.
Aeration is the most important and indispensable operation unit for the treatment of swine manure using aerobic liquid-composting process. The composting of swine manure depends on biological treatment process, but the highly concentrated ammonia nitrogen is required a pretreatment to expect the appropriate efficiency of the biological treatment process. In this study, pilot experiments have been carried out to estimate of the fit condition about ammonia stripping process as a pretreatment to aerobic liquid- composting. pH adjustment with $Ca(OH)_2$ was economically superior to use of NaOH and optimum pH of ammonia stripping was 12.3, ammonia nitorgen was rapidly removed as pH were increased at $$35^{\circ}C$$. When air stripping is performed before aerobic liquid-stripping, a high initial pH is required for complete ammonia removal and is additional effects such as organic substances, phosphorus, turbidity, and color removal. Stripping process was very efficient in the pretreatment of highly concentrated ammonia nitrogen for composting of swine manure. Emission rate of gaseous ammonia was $0.5355mole\;s^{-1}$ at initial time and $0.0253mole\;s^{-1}$ at finitial time. The fit condition of ammonia stripping in this study were at the temperature of $$35^{\circ}C$$, and the pH of 12.3 during 48 hours.
To Assessment of the quantified renal uptake rates in every $^{99m}Tc$-DMSA scan tests of patients is actually difficult because of time consumption and complicated calculations required to measure the correct dose of the infused radionulide and radiation decay, the adjustment for the depth of kidney and the subtraction of background count. We've formulated two regression models for the quantified renal uptake rates[I] from the simple renal uptake rates[H] with a square shaped ROI (Region-Of-Interest) in 25 cases (Group 1) and with a kidney shaped ROI in 37 cases (Group 2), respectively. The regression model for the Group 1 was $[I]_1$=0.885 $[H]_1$-4.575 (P<0.005), and for the Group 2 was $[I]_2$=0.591 $[H]_2$-2.105 (p<0.005). The formal charts were clinically convenient to evaluate the individual renal functions in patients with $^{99m}Tc$-DMSA renal scan.
Monoiodobromosulfophthalein-$^{131}$ I (MIBSP-$^{131}$ I), one of the useful radiopharmaceuticals for liver function studies, has been prepared by a simple isotope exchange between the MIBSP and the molecular iodine-$^{131}$ I in phosphate buffer, pH 5.3. The pooled cold MIBSP was prepared by a normal iodination of BSP using iodine monochloride, and separated from the iodination mixture by applying a Sephadex LH-20 chromatography. At 10$0^{\circ}C$, the exchange rate was so fast that the reaction could be terminated in 5 min to show upto 95% yield. The final product could be obtained simply by further heating for about 5 min in a boiling water bath in the presence of a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, and subsequent pH adjustment and membrane filtration.

Toxicity of metal plating wastewater was evaluated by using acute toxicity tests on Daphnia magna. To identify toxicants of metal plating wastewater, several manipulations such as solid phase extraction (SPE), ion exchange and graduated pH adjustment were used. The SPE test had no significant effect on baseline toxicity, suggesting absence of toxic non-polar organics in metal plating wastewater. However, anion exchange largely decreased the baseline toxicity by 88%, indicating the causative toxicants were inorganic anions. Considering high concentration of chromium in metal plating wastewater, it is thought the anion is Cr(VI) species. Graduated pH test showing independence of the toxicity on pH change strongly supports this assumption. However, as revealed by toxicity confirmation experiment, the initial toxicity of metal plating wastewater (24-h TU=435) was not explained only by Cr(VI) (24-h TU = 725 at $280\;mg\;L^{-1}$). Addition of nickel($29.5\;mg\;L^{-1}$) and copper ($26.5\;mg\;L^{-1}$) largely decreased the chromium toxicity up to 417 TU, indicating antagonistic interaction between heavy metals. This heavy metal interaction was successfully predicted by an equation of 24-h $TU\;=\;3.67\;{\times}\;\ln([Cu]\;+\;[Ni])\;+\;79.44$ at a fixed concentration of chromium.
In order to extend the shelf-life of packaged or coated foods, an antibacterial edible film containing 1.8% of BLS was developed from the defatted corn germ meal, which had been fermented with Bacillus subtilis under the optimum condition of pH 7.0-7.5 and $33^{\circ}C$ for 33 h. Water vapor permeability of the fermented film $(88.3mg/cm^2\;h)$ was higher than those of the normal corn germ films $(75.8mg/cm^2\;h)$. Protein solubility of the fermented film was also higher than ordinary corn germ film at the pH range of 3-10. The fermented corn germ film had higher tensile strength and lower % elongation (elongation rate) than the ordinary corn germ film. The antimicrobial activity of the film was more than 50% of the maximum activity after film production with heat treatment at $90^{\circ}C$ and pH adjustment to 9. When the corn germ protein film with bacteriocin-like substance was applied on the mashed sausage media containing E. coli, the bacterial growth inhibition was higher than the ordinary corn protein film.
Operational parameters for struvite crystallization, as a process to recover nitrogen and phosphorus resources from animal wastewater, were studied in this research. Crystallization distinctive of NH$_4$-N and PO$_4$$^{3-}$ in accordance to chemical sources, influent pH, aeration and stirring was examined using 2L of working volume of struvite reactor. Also, to find an effective treatment process combining with electrolysis method, removal characteristics of NH$_4$-N and PO$_4$$^{3-}$ in 6 different processes was tested. As chemical sources for the derivation of struvite formation, MgSO$_4$ and MgCl$_2$ were superior to CaCO$_3$ and CaCl$_2$. From experiment which was conducted to know the effects of aeration and stirring on struvite formation, it was revealed that aeration stimulated the crystallization reaction by inducing faster pH increase. While 90% of P removal was achieved within 1 hour under aeration, 14 hours was consumed under stirring condition. Struvite formation under aeration was affected by influent pH. No crystallization was observed at pH 5 level, but active crystallization reaction was induced over pH 6.0. 95% of P removal by struvite formation at pH 6, 7 and 9 was achieved within 3h, 2h and 10 min., respectively. However, over pH 10, operational problem due to excessive foam formation occurred, and blunting of crystallization reaction was observed at pH 11. When consider the pH range of animal wastewater, pH 7 to 9, efficient struvite formation could be achieved by simple aeration, without any chemical usage for pH adjustment. Among tested processes, the treatment process which electrolyzing the supernatant from struvite reactor, providing air to both reactors, showed best pollutant removal efficiencies. In this combined process, the removal efficiencies of NH$_4$-N and PO$_4$$^{3-}$ was 86% and 98%, respectively, and 92.4% of color removal was obtained.
The experiment was carried out to investigate the productivity of freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus and marine rotifer, B. rotundiformis at various temperatures, initial inoculation and pH in a 5 L semi-continuous high density culture. Rotifers were fed by commercial condensed freshwater Chlorella. When pH was not controlled, average daily productions of freshwater and marine rotifers increased with temperature. The highest production, $44\times10^6$ rotifers, was achieved of B. calyciflorus at $32^{\circ}C$ and the possible production lasting period of B. calyciflorus was shorter than that of B. rotundiformis. Under the adjustment of pH at 7, the possible production lasting periods of B. calyciflorus and B. rotundiformis inoculated with 5,000 inds./mL were longer than those of rotifers inoculated with 10,000 inds./mL, and the daily production rate of the former was higher than that of the latter. The results from this study indicated that optimum density of the initial inoculation for the cultivation of B. calyciflorus and B. rotundiformis was 5,000 inds,/mL under the controlled conditions of pH 7 and at $32^{\circ}C$ in a semi-continuous high density culture, in terms of production rate and food cost aspects.
Purpose: The purpose of this study were to analysis the effect on change of spinal neuron excitability during gait training of hemiplegia patients by the functional electrical stimulation. Methods: Thirty six hemiplegia patients participated in this study. Stimulation conditions of FES were pulse rate 35pps, pulse width $250{\mu}s$, and on-time 0.3 second, treatment hour was 30 min. and treatment period was once a day for five days a week through six weeks. For functional evaluations before and after treatment, Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), active range of motion (AROM), Hmax threshold, H/Mmax ratio were measured and the following conclusions were obtained. Results: Functional evaluation showed significant changes in experimental group as MAS(p<0.01), AROM(p<0.001), compared to control group. In spinal neuron excitability evaluation, change of Hmax threshold was significantly reduced in both non weight bearing (p<0.001) and bearing condition (p<0.05), H/Mmax ratio was significantly reduced in non weight bearing (p<0.05) and bearing condition (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, application of FES to hemiplegia patients in recovery stage during gait training improved mitigation of muscular spasticity, balance adjustment and moving ability and it was interpreted that it was caused by mitigation of muscular spasticity by the spinal neuron excitability.
Phytic acid known as an antinutritional facfor was studied for its effect on the solubility and digestibility of high-phytate and low-phytate soy protein isolates (SPI) obtained by two different methods of pH adjustment. Phytic acid content was 2.48% in high-phytate SPI and 0.72% in low-phytate SPI. Solubility of soy proteins was higher in low-phytate SPI than in high-phytate SPI at all pH values tested and it was lowered by adding more phytic acid to result in precipitation of the proteins. The inhibitory effect of phytic acid toward pepsin digestion of SPI increased by the increasing amount of phytic acid added and its effect was slightly higher in high-phytate SPI than in low-phytate SPI.
