  • A new picking algorithm has been developed on real-time basis for finding the onset of P wave as well as discriminating the micro seismic signal from artificial noise. Unlike the previous methods which have used the STA/LTA ratio for discriminating the P arrivals, we have adopted the slope discrimination methods for identifying the P onset. As result, this algorithm has been turned out to be efficient in both accuracy and computation in on-line system.

  • Synthetic routes are described for the introduction of hydroxyalkyl groups to the upper rim of calix[4]arene. Treatment of p-bromocalix[4]arene methyl ether 3 with n-BuLi followed by para-formaldehyde produced p-hydroxymethylcalix[4]arene methyl ether 4 in 60% yield. p-Acetylcalix[4]arene methyl ether 7, obtained by Friedel-Crafts acetylation of calix[4]arene methyl ether 6, was reduced with NaBH4 to produce p-(1-hydroxy ethyl)calix[4]arene methyl ether 8 in 67% yield.

  • Serratia marcescens IRBG500 and Herbaspirillum seropedicae Z67 grow endophytically in rice. The ability of these bacteria to colonize rice grown under increased nutrient availability was assessed in variety IR72 using strains marked with transposon-based gusA. The endophytic colonization was monitored via bacterial enumeration and histochemical visualization of GUS expression of bacteria in plant tissues. Rhizoplane and endophytic colonization by both bacteria was significantly inhibited in the rice plants grown in the presence of 10 mM $NH_4Cl$. In contrast, the addition of 10 mM $KNO_3$ showed no adverse effect on colonization. Increasing the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ to 5 mM significantly reduced endophytic colonization by both bacterial strains, whereas the addition of 0.5 mM $Fe^{2+}$ substantially lowered the colonization of roots by S. marcescens IRBG500 but showed no effect on colonization by H. seropedicae Z67. Taken together, these finding suggest that, like in legume-rhizobial symbiosis as well as plant-pathogen interactions, nutrient status, particularly $NH_4^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations in the surrounding medium, plays an important role in the regulation of endophytic infection and colonization processes in rice.

  • This study was carried out investigate the effects of dietary addition of mineral and sugar on the dry matter intake, daily gain, yield grade and quality grade of Hanwoo (Bos taurus coreanae) steers. Three diets fed to steers included a control diet (concentrate mix and rice straw : C) and two treatments diet (control diet + black sugar 100 g + mineral 100 g : T1, and control diet + black sugar 150 g + mineral 50 g : T2). The results are summarized as follows; total feeding intake, body weight gain and daily gain did not show significant differences among the three treatments. Cold carcass weight was significantly (p<0.05) higher in T2 than in the other two treatments (C and T1). There was no significant difference in yield traits of back fat thickness, longissimus muscle area and yield grade among the three treatments (C, T1 and T2). Marbling score showed significantly (p<0.05) higher in order of T2 (5.67) > T1 (4.67) > C (3.67). Meat color, fat color, texture and maturity were no significant difference. Quality grade was higher in T2 than in the other two treatments (C and T1), but there was no significant difference. The results show that marbling score and quality grade of Hanwoo can be increased by high dry matter intake with feeding addition of mineral and sugar.

  • In this study, the H2O reaction with SiO clusters was investigated using ab initio Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory calculations. Three chemistry models, PBE1/DGDZVP (Model 1), PBE1/DGDZVP (Si atom), and aug-cc-pVDZ (O and H atoms), (Model 2) and PBE1/aug-cc-pVDZ (Model 3), were used. The average bond lengths, as well as the relative and reaction energies, were calculated using Models 1, 2, and 3. The average bond lengths of Si-O and O-H are 1.67-1.75 Å and 0.96-0.97 Å, respectively, using Models 1, 2, and 3. The most stable structures were formed by the H transfer from an H2O molecule except for Si3O3-H2O-1 cluster. The Si3O3 cluster with H2O exhibited the lowest reaction energy. In addition, the Bader charge distributions of the SinOn and (SiO)n-H2O clusters with n = 1-7 were calculated using Model 1. We determined that the reaction sites between H2O and the SiO clusters possessed the highest fraction of electrons.

  • Thirty one culture filtrates of Penicillium app. isolated from foodstuffs were submitted for toxicity by use of HeLa cell and ICR-mice. Nine strains among the 31 of Penicillia were cytotoxic to the HeLa cell cultures. Seven strains among the 31 of Penicillia were toxic to the ICR-mice and the pathological findings were the liver injury featured by parenchymal cell necrosis and degeneration. As a mass screening, cytotoxicity test using HeLa cells is feasible method to detect the mycotoxin-producing fungi.

  • To find the optimum growth and metal removal condition of isolated strain LH2, effects of the environmental factors such as medium pH, growth temperature, and metal concentrations were investigated. Based on the 18S rDNA analysis, the isolated strain was identified to Exophiala sp. with 100% homology. Isolated strain Exophiala sp. LH2 showed maximum removal efficiency of metals at the shaking conditions of pH 7 and $25^{\circ}C$. When the concentration of metal was under 200ppm, the specific metal removal velocity at pH 7 increased from 0.01 to 4.43 mg-metal $L^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}{\cdot}mg{\cdot}DCW^{-1}$ as the concentration of metal increased from 10 ppm to 200 ppm. When 200 ppm of each metal was contained in the culture medium adjusted with pH 7, metal removal efficiencies Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were 99.28%, 97.67%, 91.94%, 99.77%, 99.61%, respectively.

  • Background: Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a heterogeneous genetic disease and its etiology remains poorly understood. Recent genome wide association and replication studies have highlighted specific polymorphisms contributing to childhood ALL predispositions mostly in European populations. It is unclear if these observations generalize to other populations with a lower incidence of ALL. The current case-control study evaluated variants in ARID5B (rs7089424, rs10821936), IKZF1 (rs4132601) and CEBPE (rs2239633) genes, which appear most significantly associated with risk of developing childhood B-lineage ALL. Materials and Methods: Using TaqMan assays, genotyping was conducted for 162 de novo B-lineage ALL cases and 150 unrelated healthy controls in India. Appropriate statistical methods were applied. Results: Genotypic and allelic frequencies differed significantly between cases and controls at IKZF1-rs4132601 (p=0.039, p=0.015) and ARID5B-rs10821936 (p=0.028, p=0.026). Both rs10821936 (p=0.019; OR 0.67; 95% CI=0.47-0.94) and rs4132601 (p=0.018; OR 0.67; 95%CI 0.48-0.94) were associated with reduced disease risk. Moreover, gender-analysis revealed male-specific risk associations for rs10821936 (p=0.041 CT+CC) and rs4132601 (p=0.005 G allele). Further, ARID5B-rs7089424 and CEBPE-rs2239633 showed a trend towards decreased disease risk but without significance (p=0.073; p=0.73). Conclusions: Our findings provide the first evidence that SNPs ARID5B-rs10821936 and IKZF1-rs4132601 are associated with decreased B-lineage ALL susceptibility in Indian children. Understanding the effects of these variants in different ethnic groups is crucial as they may confer different risk of ALL within different populations.
