  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of various thermal treatments on the growth of Morganella morganii and Photobacterium phosphoreum and activity of crude histidine decarboxylase (HDC) obtained from M. morganii and P. phosphoreum. Crude HDC and the two strains were treated at $65^{\circ}C$/30 min, $80^{\circ}C$/10 min, $100^{\circ}C$/10 min, and $121^{\circ}C$/10 min. Activity of crude HDC decreased with increasing temperature. Viable cells counts of M. morganii and P. phosphoreum were not detected in any heated samples. SDS-PAGE patterns of heated HDC did not show significant differences up to $100^{\circ}C$. However, at $121^{\circ}C$, protein band intensity was weakened. In native-PAGE, there was a major change in the pattern of HDC at $65^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that thermal treatment can help to reduce histamine production by reducing HDC activity and growth of M. morganii and P. phosphoreum.

  • Objectives: To explore the expression of astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) in cervical cancer and analyze its correlation with microvascular density (MVD), nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kB p65) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Materials and Methods: Immunohistochemical MaxVision method was adopted to detect the expression level of AEG-1, NF-kB p65 and VEGF in 45 samples of invading cervical cancer and 12 samples of cervicitis from The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. Tumor microvascular endothelial marker CD34 combined with Weidner was used to determine the MVD in cervical cancer tissue. The positive expression and staining conditions of AEG-1, NF-kB p65 and VEGF in cervical cancer tissues were observed under a light microscope. Correlations between expression of AEG-1 protein and those of NF-Kb p65 and VEGF, as well as MVD, were analyzed using Pearson correlation. Results: The expression levels of AEG-1 were $0.186{\pm}0.043$ in cervical cancer and $0.051{\pm}0.002$ in chronic cervicitis (p<0.01). Moreover, expression of AEG-1 was related to vascular invasion and lymphatic metastasis of cervical cancer (p<0.01), but not with age of the patients, differentiation degree, tumour size, pathological type and parametrial infiltration (p>0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that the expression of AEG-1 was linked with NF-kB p65 (r=0.501, p=0.000), VEGF (r=0.718, p=0.000) as well as MVD in cervical cancer tissue (r=0.815, p=0.000). Conclusions: AEG-1 is highly expressed in cervical cancer and promotes angiogenesis, which might be related to the fact that AEG-1 activating the signal pathway of NF-kB could up-regulate the level of VEGF expression.

This study conducted through questionnaire and dietary survey by 24-hr recall to 850 adults residing in Samcheok. Subjects were divided into four groups according to the age in male and female, which included 20~29 yrs group (male n = 94, female n = 66), 30~49 yrs group (male n = 201, female n = 216), 50~64 yrs group (male n = 88, female n = 96), and $\geq65$ yrs group (n = 46, female n = 43). In male, 20~29 yrs group had a larger proportion of subjects who skipped breakfast, lunch and dinner compared to other groups (p < 0.001, p < 0.05, p < 0.01). The daily food and energy intakes in $\geq50$ yrs group were significantly lower than those of < 50 yrs. Protein and fat intakes of 20~29 yrs group were significantly higher than those of the other groups. But ND (Nutrient Density) of minerals as like calcium, iron and plant iron in 20~29 yrs group were significantly lower than those of other groups. The KDDS (Korean's Dietary Diversity Score) of 20~29 yrs group, 30~49 yrs group, 50~64 yrs group and $\geq65$ yrs group in male were 4.1, 3.8, 3.7 and 3.5 respectively and there was significant difference (p < 0.001). In female, skipping breakfast and dinner were significantly higher in 20~29 yrs group than in other groups (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). And the use of nutrient supplementation was higher in 30~49 yrs group than that of other groups (p < 0.05). The daily energy intakes was higher in 20~49 yrs group than that of $\geq65$ yrs group. The ND (Nutrient Density) of animal protein, vitamins A and $B_1$ in 20~29 yrs group were significantly lower than those of other groups. The KDDS of 20~29 yrs group, 30~49 yrs group, 50~64 yrs group and $\geq65$ yrs group in female were 4.0, 3.9, 3.9 and 3.6 respectively and $\geq65$ yrs group was significant lower than other groups. According to these results, $\geq65$ yrs and 20~29 yrs group had more dietary habit problems and poor nutrition status than 30~64 yrs group. The results of this study revealed that nutritional management and education for adequate meals should be emphasized in adults and elderly.

  • Background: Lung cancer continues to increase and one half of all cases of lung cancer occur in patients age 65 years and older. However, it seems that lung cancer is less treatable in elderly patients because of co-morbid illness or poor tolerance of surgery and chemotherapy. The intention of this study is to seek an adequate treatment approach for lung cancer in the elderly through an understanding of its characteristics. Method: The clinical data of 207 patients who were diagnosed with histologically proven lung cancer at the department of internal medicine in Seoul Municipal Boramae Hospital between September 1994 and August 1998 were retrospectively analyzed according to their age groups; group I$\geq$65 years(n=122) and group II<65 years(n=85). Results: The peak incidence of age was 7th decade(36.2%) and male age 65 years and older were 42% of all patients. Although dyspnea was more common in group I(26%) than in group II(11%)(p=.0l), there were no significant difference in other symptoms, stage, and histologic type between two groups. Group I significantly had more patients with poor performance(ECOG 3&4) than group II(35.2% vs.12.9%, p=.000). The percentage of patients with non-small cell carcinoma received supportive care only was significantly higher in group I than in group I(74% vs. 35%, p=.000). However, survival of patients who had curative intent treatment was similar between two groups(median survival 11.3 mos vs. 23 mos, p>.05). The histologic subtype, stage and performance status were significant prognostic factors affecting survival, but age itself was not. Conclusion : Lung cancer is prevalent in the elderly and aggressive diagnosis and treatment should be considered in elderly patients with good performance status.

  • We fabricated a P-I-i-I-N $GaAs/Al_{0.35}Ga_{0.65}As$waveguide phase modulator with significant phase shift for the TE mode but negligible for the TM mode. We selected the P-I-i-I-N structure to cause a phase shift about the TM mode. The wavelength of $\lambda=1.55$\mu\textrm{m}$ was measured for both the TE and TM modes, respectively. As a result, the measured phase shift efficiency ($\Delta\phi$) by using the Fabry-Perot resonance method was $7.9^{\circ}/V.mm$ for TE-polarized light. Also, no modulation was observed for TM-polarized light.

  • The relationship between exercise intensity, oxidative stress and antioxidant status has been studied in sixteen trained male athletes aged 20-25years. Subjects performed 30-40minutes of treadmill running at 65% of VO2 max(high intensity exercise). Blood samples were taken before and immediately after two exercise bouts for measurement of blood antioxidants, indices of lipid peroxidation and susceptibility of crythrocyte to peroxidation. Plasma concentrations of cholesterol(7.3%), vitamin C(7.5%) and uric acid(2.1%) were elevated a little after exercise at 65% of VO2 max(13.7%)were significantly high than before exercise(p<0.05). However, these exercise-induced changes could be partly due to significant decreases in plasma volume which occurred after both exercise bouts(p<0.05). Plasma volume decreased 5.85$\pm$2.06% and 11.25$\pm$2.87% with exercise at 65% and 85% of VO2 max, respectively. The erythrocyte susceptibility to peroxidation after exercise at 65% of VO2 max was unchanged compared with the value before exercise, whereas after exercise at 85% of VO2 max, it was significantly higher than after exercise at 65% and 85% of VO2 max as well as before exercise(p<0.05). A significant increase at 85% of VO2 max, it was significantly high than after exercise at 85% of VO2 max (29.10$\pm$4.76ug/g Hb)when compared with the level before exercise (24.61$\pm$3.45ug/g Hb)(p<0.05). The results suggest that exercise-induced changes in plasma levels of lipid peroxide and antioxidant need to be evaluated, taking the shift in plasma volume into consideration. Also, exercise at high intensity corresponding to 85% of VO2 max alters the erythrocyte antioxidant status in relation to exercise-induced of oxidative stress.
