To investigate the effects of sodium alginate, gum karaya and gum arabic on the foaming properties of sodium caseinate, surface tension, specific viscosity, turbidity, foaming ability and foam stability of the caseinate solution with added gums were examined. Surface tensions of the 5%(w/v) protein solutions containing gums at pH 7.0 and 8.0 were $43.7{\sim}44.7dyne/cm$ and $43.6{\sim}44.0 dyne/cm$, respectively. Specific viscosities of the solutions with 0.2 and 0.3% sodium alginates were 15.6 and 39.1 at pH 7.0 (control, 2.8), and 12.1 and 8.2 at pH 8.0 (control, 2.6), respectively. Turbidities were $69.5{\sim}74.0$ at pH 7.0 and $68.0{\sim}72.5$ at pH 8.0. The optimum conditions for foaming ability of the solutions were 0.1% conc. and 15 min whipping in addition of sodium alginates; 0.2% conc. and 20 min whipping in gum karaya; 0.1% conc. and 10 min whipping in gum arabic. For foam stability optimal concentrations were 0.3% in sodium alginate and gum karaya at pH 7.0 and 0.2% at pH 8.0. Addition of sodium alginates was most effective to increase foam stability of the solution, but was not effective to increase foaming ability. At same pH, surface tensions and turbidity of the solutions were related to foaming ability and specific viscosities were related to foam stability.

This study was conducted to analyze the cytotoxic effects of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and propyl gallate (PG) in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells. Here we measured the inhibition level of gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) and elucidated the relationships between GJIC and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) such as ERK, JNK, and p38. The cytotoxicities of BHT and PG appeared at concentrations of 1.0mM and 0.25mM, respectively, in the WB-F344 cells; and GJIC inhibition, which was analyzed by a scrape-loading/dye transfer assay and Western blotting analysis, appeared at 0.6mM for BHT and 0.1mM for PG, respectively. Also, the phosphorylations of Cx43, ERK, JNK, and p38 increased in dose-dependent manners. This suggests that BHT and PG treatments inhibited GJIC by the phosphorylation of MAPKs prior to cell damage.
The characteristics of $Co^{2+}$ removal in the kaolinite column were analyzed by electrokinetic remediation. Ethanoic buffer was injected in the kaolinite column and $CH_3$COOH was continuously added to the cathode reservoir to restrain the pH increase. The pH of the cathode of the kaolinite column was 4.0 at first. Since it was controlled to be under 6.5 after 43.6 hours due to ethanoic buffer, precipitation of ${Co(OH)}_2$ was not formed in the column. Effluent rate increased with time and $Co^{2+}$ removal in the column at initial time was mainly controlled by ion migration. 13.1% of total $Co^{2+}$ in the column was removed after 10 hours, the 46.8% of total $Co^{2+}$ after 20.8 hours, and the 71.7% of total $Co^{2+}$ after 30.1 hours, the 94.6% of total $Co^{2+}$ after 43.6 hours, Meanwhile, the residual concentrations in the column calculated by the developed model were similar to experiment results.

This study is tried to confirm the effect of practical education environment and practical stress perceived by nursing college students who have experienced clinical practice on department adaptation. The subjects of the study were 154 nursing students who experienced clinical practice at nursing universities in Area C. As a result of the study, there was a positive correlation between the practical education environment perceived by nursing students and department adaptation (r=.43, p=.001), a negative correlation between practical stress and department adaptation (r=-.15, p=.012). The practical education environment and practical stress were identified as factors influencing nursing students' adaptation to the department. Therefore, in order to positively improve the practical education environment, it is necessary to continuously train related factors that can help adapt to field practice and prepare measures to improve the practical education environment through close cooperation with practice institutions.
Our works performed for preparation of oligosaccharides from carrageenan, seaweed polysaccharide, and one active strain for carrageenan was isolated from sea water and identified to Pseudomonas alcaligenes. Carrageenan degrading enzyme was purified from the culture fluid of isolated strain-Pseudomonas alcaligenes JCL-43, by DEAE-Cellulose, Sephadex G-100, Q-Sepharose and CM Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography. Two enzyme-F-I, F-II- was identified this purifying process, and the molecular weight of the purified carrageenase were estimated to be 23.6kDa and 30.2kDa, respectively. The optimum pH and temperature for two carrageenase activity were 7.0 and 4$0^{\circ}C$. These enzymes were stable in the pH range of 6.0~7.5 and lower than 5$0^{\circ}C$, and required 1.5% NaCl for optimum activity. And these carragennase were inhibited by metal ions such as Cu2+, Zn2+, Hg2+, but increased by Ba2+ and Ca2+, and showed specificity on -carrageenan.

To study the risk factors associated with maternal HBsAg carrier and the effects of maternal HBs antigenemia on the neonatal health, sera of 729 pergnant women admitted to the Keimyung University Hospital for delivery during the period of February 1-May 30. 1982 were tested for HBsAg by RPHA method and for anti-HBs by PHA method. Among them 43 women (5.9%) had HBsAg and 246 women (33.7%) had anti-HBs giving an infection rate of 39.6%. The interview data for 43 HBsAg positive mothers and randomly selected 210 HBsAg negative mothers showed a statistically significant association between acupuncture history and HBsAg positive rate (p<0.005) which suggest that acupuncture might have contributed significantly to the propagation of viral hepatitis in Korea. The living standard of HBsAg positive mothers was generally lower than that of HBsAg negative mothers which supports the hypothesis that environmental factors are associated with viral hepatitis B infection. None of the 43 neonates born to HBsAg positive mothers had HBsAg in their cord blood. Three months after birth, 35 out of 43 infants were retested and only one infant became HBsAg positive. At six months of age, 32 out of 35 infants were retested and none of them were HBsAg positive except the same infant who was positive at three months. Among 20 control infants of HBsAg negative mothers, all of them were HBsAg negative at three and six months follow-up. These findings are not consistent with the supposition that perinatal infection is a main route of viral hepatitis B transmission in south-east Asia including Korea. HBsAg positive mothers had significantly higher rate of premature delivery (27.9%) than HBsAg negative mothers (11.7%) (p<0.05). Also, the low birthweight incidence rate was higher among HBsAg positive mothers (23.3%) than negative mothers (14.1%) but this was not statistically significant (P=0.16). The premature rupture of membrane was more frequent among HBsAg positive mothers (25.5%) than negative mothers (11.1%) (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in the stillbirth rate and incidence of congenital anomalies between HBsAg positive and negative groups. It was not clarified in this study due to small sample size whether higher incidence of premature delivery and premature rupture of membranes among HBsAg positive mothers was due to HBs antigenemia per so or their lower living standard than HBsAg negative mothers.
