  • The purpose of this study was to investigate in vitro antibacterial activities of pozzolan against super bacteria and intestinal bacteria. There were four treatment groups: 1) CON, pozzolan free control group; 2) DP0.3, microbial culture medium prepared by mixing distilled water and 0.3% of pozzolan powder; 3) DP0.5, microbial culture medium prepared by mixing distilled water and 0.5% of pozzolan powder; and 4) PE, microbial culture medium prepared with pozzolan powder extracts without adding distilled water. The count of Lacctobacillus casei was significantly higher in the DP0.3 group compared to CON (P<0.05). However, it showed no significant difference compared to other treatment groups. Numbers of Clostridium butyricum, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium were significantly lower in pozzolanic treatment groups compared to CON (P<0.05). Clostridium butyricum and Salmonella typhimurium counts were significantly different among DP0.3, DP0.5, and PE groups (P<0.05). Counts of E. coli were also significantly between DP0.5 and PE groups (P<0.05). Counts of MRSA and VRE were significantly lower in pozzolanic treatment groups compared to CON (P<0.05). MRSA counts were significantly different among DP0.5, DP0.3 and PE groups. VRE counts were significantly higher in the order of PE > DP0.3> DP0.5> CON (P<0.05). These results suggest that pozzolan could be used as a dietary silicate supplement and a natural antibacterial agent for livestock if its antimicrobial activity against super bacteria and harmful bacteria in the intestine is confirmed.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the setting time, compressive strength, solubility, and pH of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) mixed with glass ionomer cement (GIC) and to compare these properties with those of MTA, GIC, IRM, and SuperEBA. Materials and Methods: Setting time, compressive strength, and solubility were determined according to the ISO 9917 or 6876 method. The pH of the test materials was determined using a pH meter with specified electrode for solid specimen. Results: The setting time of MTA mixed with GIC was significantly shorter than that of MTA. Compressive strength of MTA mixed with GIC was significantly lower than that of other materials at all time points for 7 days. Solubility of 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 specimen from MTA mixed with GIC was significantly higher than that of other materials. Solubility of 1 : 2 specimen was similar to that of MTA. The pH of MTA mixed with GIC was 2-4 immediately after mixing and increased to 5-7 after 1 day. Conclusions: The setting time of MTA mixed with GIC was improved compared with MTA. However, other properties such as compressive strength and pH proved to be inferior to those of MTA. To be clinically feasible, further investigation is necessary to find the proper mixing ratio in order to improve the drawbacks of MTA without impairing the pre-existing advantages and to assess the biocompatibility.

  • The objective of this study was to find an optimum methane yield condition in anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge with microwave pretreatment. The pretreatment process was carried out using a lab scale industrial microwave unit (2,450 MHz frequency). The digestion efficiency of pretreated sludge was evaluated by biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. Box-Behnken design and Response Surface Analysis (RSA) were applied to determine the optimal combination of sludge mixing ratio (0 to 100%), power (400 to 1600 W), holding time (0 to 10 min) and pretreatment temperature (60 to 100℃). BMP test results showed that Volatile Solid (VS) removal efficiency was up to 48% at a condition of 0% for mixing ratio, 1600 W for power, 5 min for holding time, and 80℃ for pretreatment temperature. Methane production was up to 832.3 mL/g VSremoved at a condition of 50% for mixing ratio, 1000 W for power, 5 min for holding time, and 80℃ for pretreatment temperature. The results of the variance analysis (ANOVA) showed that the p-value of the power and pretreatment temperature among the independent variables were significant (p<0.05), and in particular, the pretreatment temperature significantly affected on the solubilization and methane production. The optimum condition for the maximum methane yield (847 mL/g VSremoved) was consist of 38.4% of mixing ratio, 909.1 W of power, 4.1 min of holding time, and 80℃ of temperature within the design boundaries.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of addition of food waste in brown water for anaerobic hydrogen production. Batch experiment was carried out to determine appropriate food waste to brown water mixing ratio. Maximum hydrogen yield of $6.92mmol\;H_2/g\;COD_{removed}$ was obtained at 70% food waste and 30% brown water. Semi-pilot scale reactor was operated based on result of batch experiment. Semi-pilot reactor operated, mixing 70% food waste and 30% brown water showed significant increment in butyric acid concentration. B/P (Butyric to propionic acid ratio) which is considered as governing factor for hydrogen production was found high (52.64). Maximum hydrogen yield of $25.03mmol\;H_2/g\;COD_{removed}$ was obtained. Result of this study concluded that mixing of food waste to brown water at appropriate ratio assists in enhanced hydrogen fermentation.
