The concern over the risk of environmental exposure to brominated phenols has been increased and has led the researchers to focus their attention on the study of bromophenol treatment. In this study, the effects of pH and ferrate(VI) dose on the degradation of 2-bromophenol were investigated. The results indicated that the oxidation of 2-bromophenol by liquid ferrate(VI) was found to be highly sensitive to the pH condition. Furthermore, the highest removal efficiency was observed at the neutral condition with the removal efficiency of 94.2%. In addition, experimental results showed that 2-bromophenol removal efficiency increased with increasing of ferrate dosage. Ferrate(VI) dose of 0.23 mM was sufficient to remove most of the 2-bromophenol with the efficiency of 99.73% and kapp value of $2982M^{-1}s^{-1}$. Seven compounds were identified as the intermediate products by the GC/MS analysis.
The solubilization of p-bromophenol by the micellar system of TTAB(tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) and the micellization of TTAB were studied by the UV-vis spectrophotometric method simultaneously. And the effects of temperature on these properties have been measured for the thermodynamic study. The results show that the ${\Delta}G_s{^o}$ and ${\Delta}H_s{^o}$ values are negative and the ${\Delta}S_s{^o}$ values are positive for the solubilization of p-bromophenol within the measured range. On the other hand, the ${\Delta}G_m{^o}$ values are negative and the ${\Delta}H_m{^o}$ and ${\Delta}S_m{^o}$ values are positive for the micellization of TTAB. The effects of additives such as n-butanol and NaCl have been studied also for both properties and the relationship between these two properties has been also studied. From the results, we can postulate the solubilization site of p-bromophenol in the micelle.

Several microorganisms from rat and human feces and lumen fluid of cows were screened for their ability to decolorize the synthetic dyes. Consequently, a novel dye-degrading strain AB&J was isolated. Taxonomic identification including 165 rDNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate had 99.9% homology in its 165 rDNA base sequence with Clostridium perfringens. After 27 h Incubation with the strain, brilliant blue R, bromophenol blue, crystal violet, malachite green, methyl green, and methyl orange were decolorized by about 69.3%, 97.7%, 96.3%, 97.9%, 75.1%, and 97.2%, respectively. The triphenlmethane dye, bromophenol blue, was decolorized extensively by growing Clostridium perfringens AB&J cells in liquid cultures under anaerobic condition, although their growth was strongly inhibited in the initial stage of incubation. This group of dyes is toxic, depending on the concentration used. The dye was significantly decolorized at a relatively lower concentration of below 50 $\mu g \;ml^{-1}$, however, the growth of the cells was mostly suppressed at a dye concentration of 100 $\mu g \;ml^{-1}$. The decolorization activity in cell-free extracts was much higher in cytoplasm than in periplasm and cytoplasmic membrane. Therefore, the enzyme related uptake of bromophenol blue seemed to be localized in cytoplasm. The optimal pH and temperature of bromophenol blue uptake fur decolorization activities were 7.0 and 4$0^{\circ}C$, respectively.
When m-phenylenediamine (MPD) or m-aminophenol (MAP) was treated with formaldehyde(F), under $N_2$ stream, at the temperature $-5\sim0^{\circ}C$, addition condensation occurred and insoluble resins formed immediately. Under the same reaction conditions m-phenylenediamine, m-aminophenol and formaldehyde also easily copolycondensed and insoluble MPD-MAP-F type copolymer formed. MPD-MAP-F type copolycondensed resin was superior in both heat-resistant property and adsorptivity of Bromophenol Blue or Methylene Blue than the MPD-F and MAP-F type resins. From the result of TGA, under $N_2$stream, MPD-MAP-F resin showed about $40\%$ weight loss at $800^{\circ}C$, and this type of resin 1g adsorbed 308mg of Bromophenol Blue.
Direct preparative method of 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol and 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde from 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylphenol using activated $Mn(IV)O_2$ was described. Hexadentate compartmental Iigands, $H_4L[A]\;and\; H_4L[B]$ were prepared by condensation reactions of 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxy methyl-5-methylbenzaldehyde with ethylenediamine and 1,3-diaminopropane respectively. By the reaction of macrocycle($H_4[20]DOTA$) with Ln(III) nitrate {Ln(III)=Pr, Sm, Cd, Dy }, discrete mononuclear Ln(III) complexes of the type $[Ln(H_2[20]DOTA)(ClO_4)(H_2O)]\;{\cdot}\;3H_2O$ were synthesized in the solid state. $[Ln([20]DOTA)(NO_3)(H_2O)](NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;xH_2O$ was placed in methanol for 2 days, and $[Ln([20]DOTA)(NO_3)(CH_3OH)]^{2+}$ was formed. The equilibrium constants(K) for the substitution of coordinated $CH_3OH$ in the Ln-[20]DOTA complexes by various auxiliary ligand, $L_a$(=salicylic acid, p-chlorobenzoic acid, benzoic acid, acetic acid, 4-bromophenol) were determined spectroscopically at 25$^{\circ}C$ and 0.1M $NaClO_4$. The K values calculated were in the order of salicylic acid > p-chlorobenzoic acid > benzoic acid > acetic acid > 4-bromophenol, while pKa of auxiliary ligands was in the opposite trend.
Dendritic macromolecules of the first to fourth generation were synthesized, using alkenylation and hydrosilation cycles with allylmagnesium bromide and dichloromethylsilane as building blocks and siloxane tetramer $(Me(CH_2=CH)SiO)_4$, as core molecule. By the reaction of the dichloromethylsilyl-capped generation (G4P) with p-bromophenol, p-phenylphenol and lithium phenyethynylide, dendrimers with specific functions (G4P-BP (Mw: 16,300), G4P-PP (16,121), and CAP-PA (11,764)) have been produced. Analysis of new dendrimers by NMR, UV and MALD1 mass spectrometry suggests that they are pure and unified.

Scuticociliates are regarded as serious pathogens in marine aquaculture worldwide. In Korea, they cause mass-mortalities in fish such as the commercially important olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. In particular, mixed infections of scuticociliates with pathogenic bacteria have been commonly reported. During efforts to identify natural marine-algae derived products that possess anti-bacterial and anti-scuticociliate properties, we found that an 80% methanolic extract of the red alga Polysiphonia morrowii Harvey exhibits both anti-scuticociliate activity against Miamiensis avidus, which is a major causative agent of scuticociliatosis, and anti-bacterial activities against fish pathogenic bacteria. Activity-guided fractionation and isolation of the 80% methanolic extract of P. morrowii yielded three bromophenols, which were identified as 3-bromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzyl methyl ether (1), 3-bromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (2) and urceolatol (3) based on spectroscopic analyses. 3-bromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzyl methyl ether (1) showed the highest anti-bacterial and anti-scuticociliate activities, with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of $62.5{\mu}g/mL$ (against Vibrio anguillarum) and minimal lethal concentration (MLC) of 62.5 ppm (in seawater). Investigations of the anti-bacterial and anti-scuticociliate activities of seventeen bromophenol derivatives, including the three isolated natural bromophenols, showed that the existence of an electron donating group or atom with a non-covalent electron pair at $C_4$ of the 2-bromophenol structure may be important in anti-scuticociliate activity. These findings suggest that the extract and bromophenol derivatives of P. morrowii may provide useful alternatives in aquaculture anti-scuticociliate therapies.
With an aim to evaluate dye decolorization by white rot fungus on natural living conditions, reproducing by solid-state fermentation, the process of triphenylmethane dyes decolorization using the white rot fungus P. ostreatus BP, cultivated on rice straw solid-state medium, has been demonstrated. Three typical dyes, including malachite green, bromophenol blue, and crystal violet, were almost completely decolorized by the fungus after 9 days of incubation. During the process of dye decolorization, the activities of enzyme secreted by the fungus, and the contents of soluble components, such as phenolic compounds, protein, and sugar, changed regularly. The fungus could produce ligninolytic, cellulolytic, and hemicellulolytic enzymes and laccase was the most dominant enzyme in solid-state medium. Laccase, laccase isoenzyme, and the laccase mediator could explain the decolorization of malachite green, bromophenol blue, and crystal violet by the fungus in solid-state medium, respectively. It is worth noting that the presence of the water-soluble phenolic compounds could stimulate the growth of fungus, enhance the production of laccase, and accelerate dye decolorization.

Water extract from spent mushroom substrates (SMS) of Pleurotus eryngii was utilized in decolorization of eight synthetic dyes and wastewater from a textile factory. High laccase activity was detected in the extract of P. eryngii (SMSE). The SMSE showed that decolorization rate was 34~93% after 24 h incubation without any mediator on eight dyes including Rit-blue and Rit-red used in fiber dyeing. Dye decolorization rate more than 90% was observed on bromophenol blue and remazol brilliant blue R (RBBR). Dye in textile wastewater was decolorized at room temperature after three days by addition of P. eryngii SMSE. The results suggest that biological decolorization of dyes using the P. eryngii SMSE can be used as environmental friendly materials.
This study examined the thermal reactions of 2,4-dibromophenol (diBP), 2,6-diBP and 2,4,6-triBP. The products obtained under pyrolytic conditions were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). 2,7-dibromodibenzo-p-dioxin (diBDD) was the major compound produced from the thermal reaction of 2,4-diBP. In addition, monoBDD and triBDDs were obtained through a process of debromination and bromination, respectively. The pyrolysis of 2,6-diBP and 2,4,6-triBP produced two major brominated dioxin isomers through direct condensation and a Smiles rearrangement. The two ortho-Brs in 2,6-diBP and 2,4,6-triBP mainly led to the production of dioxins, whereas in addition to 2,7-diBDD, 2,4-diBP produced two furans as minor products, 2,8-dibromodibenzofuran (diBDF) and 2,4,8-triBDF, through the intermediate dihydroxybiphenyl (DOHB). The maximum yield of the major dioxins was obtained at 400 oC, and decomposition by debromination at 500 oC resulted in less substituted bromodioxins.
