Glow discharge has lots of attractive properties, such as lower discharge sustaining voltage, no generation of ozone, and so on. And more, ionizer was developed recently using an atmospheric pressure glow discharge. On the other hand, ionizer needs a compressed or blown air to transport ion for charged objects. This air is very useful in explosive hazardous area to prevent the explosion of flammable gas and/or vapor by ignition sources, e.g. electrical spark. In this paper, we investigated the ionizing characteristic of atmospheric pressure glow discharge by controlled air flow rate from 5 liters to 60 liters a minute, and compared with decay time between the corona discharge and glow discharge as a function of some direction and distance from discharge ion source. We confirmed that an air flow rate needs 25 liters a minute to sustain the most suitable atmospheric pressure glow discharge and to increase an ionizing efficiency.

In order to study the bleaching of cotton fabrics, ozone which has been produced by an ozone generator, has been contacted with cotton fabrics in water at various conditions. The equipments used for the ozone treatment of cotton fabrics were the ozone generator and a liquor/ozone contactor. For the examination of the ozone bleaching effect on cotton fabrics the whiteness, tensile strength, wettability and clark softness of the ozone treated cotton fabrics were measured. The conclusion obtained were, ozone concentration was increased, as the voltage was increased and flow rate was decreased and oxygen amount was increased. Bleaching effect of treated fabrics increased with increasing attributed more the net concentration of ozone rather than the total ozone amount of produced. The whiteness of treated fabrics was found to be best when treating temperature was 15~20<$^{\circ}C$, in acidic condition. The tensile strength of treated fabrics decreased as the treating time increased, and as the temperature raised, and the acidity increased. The wicking distance of treated fabrics increased slightly with increasing the treating time and the temperature. Clark softness of treated fabrics was not changed until passing 30min. of the treating time, then it decreasing linealy with increasing the treating time.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal of ammonium nitrogen by biological nitrification in raw water containing LAS using BAC. At batch teats, LAS removal by ozone followed the first order reaction, and the rate constants(k) by ozone dose 1, 3mg/min.L were $0.040min^{-1}$, $0.062min^{-1}$ respectively. Therefore, the more ozone was dosed, the higher LAS was removed The reaction between ozone and ammonium nitrogen also followed the first order, and rate constants(k) at pH7,8 and 9 were $8.9{\times}10^{-4}min-1$, $3.8{\times}10^{-3}min^{-1}$, and $2.9{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$ respectively at ozone dose of 3mg/min.L . Therefore, ammonium nitrogen was little removed by ozone under neutral pH of 7. The continuous flow apparatus had four sets composed of a ozone contacter and a GAC column. Through continuous filtration test for 50days, the following conclusions were derived; (1) LAS was removed 23%, 30% respectively by ozone dose 1, 3mg/L, and was not detected in all column effluents during the period of experiment. Therefore, it appeared that adsorption capacities of each column still remained. (2) Ammonium nitrogen concentration after ozone contact varied little in raw Water because pH of raw water was from 6 to 7, and was transfered to nitrite and nitrate within GAC columns as the result of staged nitrification. After 30days, nitrite was not detected in all column effluents due to biological equilbrium between nitro semonas and nitrobacter Average removals of ammonium nitrogen in each column after the lapse of 30days were the following; ${\cdot}$ column A (ozone dose 3mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): about 100% ${\cdot}$ column B (ozone dose 1mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): 91% ${\cdot}$ column C (ozone dose 3mg/L, EBCT 14.2min): about 100% ${\cdot}$ column D (ozone dose 0mg/L, EBCT 9.5min): 53% Though column A and C reached nitrification of about 100%, column C (longer EBCT than column A) was more stable than column A. (3) After backwash, nitrification reached steady state within 5 to 8 hours. Therefore, nitrification was not greatly affected by backwash. (4) According to the nitrification capacity in depth of column A, C, where 100% nitrification occured. LAS was removed within 20cm, while ammonium nitrogen required more depth to be removed by nitrification.
In this study, we organized the test results obtained from the performance tests for the CA certificated air cleaners which had been commercially available in Korea since 2003, and analyzed the correlation among the test parameters such as flow rate, particle collection efficiency, clean air delivery rate (CADR), ozone emission, odor removal efficiency and noise level etc. The noise level of 267 air cleaners were increased as concentrated at the 45, 50, 55 dB, which are the required noise level for CA certification according to flow rate, and ozone emissions from the CA air cleaners were significantly lower than the requirement limit, 50 ppb for 24 hour operation. The average particle collection efficiency and odor removal efficiency were 89.3 and 80.8%, approximately 20% higher than the requirement of CA certification, regardless of flow rates. The particle removal performance of an air cleaner was clearly discriminated by its CADR, and the CADR was obtained with a simple calculation: 0.79 x flow rate. The low differentiation of gas removal performance of air cleaners by the current CA gas test method was improved by 3.2, 751.3, 13.4 times for ammonia, acetic acid, respectively, by adopting the CADR concept and the real time measurement method, FTIR, for gas removal performance test.
In this paper, the dielectric barrier discharge plasma generator has been studied for producing of the high concentration ozone gas. Proposed plasma generator has the structure of extremely narrow discharge air gap(0.15mm) in order to realize the high electric field discharge. We investigate the performance of the dielectric barrier discharge plasma generator experimentally and the results show that the generator has very high ozone concentration characteristics of 13.7[wt%/$O_2$] at the oxygen flow rate of 1[${\ell}$/min] of each discharge cell. So, we confirmed that the proposed plasma generator is suitable for the high concentration ozone production facility of the eco-friendly ozone functional water cleaning system in the electronic components cleaning process.
A multilayer tower-type photoreactor, in which $TiO_2$-coated glass-tubes were installed, was used to measure the vapor-phase BTEX removal efficiencies by ozone oxidation ($O_3$/UV), photocatalytic oxidation ($TiO_2$/UV) and the combination of ozone and photocatalytic oxidation ($O_3/TiO_2$/UV) process, respectively. The experiments were conducted under various relative humidities, temperatures, ozone concentrations, gas flow rates and BTEX concentrations. As a result, the BTEX removal efficiency and the oxidation rate by $O_3/TiO_2$/UV system were highest, compared to $O_3$/UV and $TiO_2$/UV system. The $O_3/TiO_2$/UV system accelerated the low oxidation rate of low-concentration organic compounds and removed organic compounds to a large extent in a fixed volume of reactor in a short time. Therefore, $O_3/TiO_2$/UV system as a superimposed oxidation technology was developed to efficiently and economically treat refractory VOCs. Also, this study demonstrated feasibility of a technology to scale up a photoreactor from lab-scale to pilot-scale, which uses (i) a separated light-source chamber and a light distribution system, (ii) catalyst fixing to glass-tube media, and (iii) unit connection in series and/or parallel. The experimental results from $O_3/TiO_2$/UV system showed that (i) the highest BTEX removal efficiencies were obtained under relative humidity ranging from 50 to 55% and temperature ranging from 40 to $50^{\circ}C$, and (ii) the removal efficiencies linearly increased with ozone dosage and decreased with gas flow rate. When applying Langmuir-Hinshelwood model to $TiO_2$/UV and $O_3/TiO_2$/UV system, reaction rate constant for $O_3/TiO_2$/UV system was larger than that for $TiO_2$/UV system, however, it was found that adsorption constant for $O_3/TiO_2$/UV system was smaller than that for $TiO_2$/UV system due to competitive adsorption between organics and ozone.
The water treatment by electrochemical method was performed to increase the yield of production. Continuous plug flow reactor was operated to treat poultry and domestic wastewaters. Experimental results were compared with experimental results of the wastewater treatment by chemical coagulation, they were increased over 10% in the removal efficiency of COD and the production rate of sludge was reduced by 30%. Ozone utilized to degrade or change the organic chemical structures, which removal efficiency increased to 20% in the electro-coagulation reactor. Economic evaluation was performed to estimate total cost of electro-coagulation reactor in comparison with that of chemical coagulation method. The total cost to treat 1000 ton/day of domestic wastewater was reduced by 50%.
Feasibility of electrokinetic(EK)-Fenton process and Ozone chemical oxidation were investigated for tile removal of organic contaminants and heavy metals from the contaminated soil. In EK-Fenton process, accumulated electroosmotic flow(EOF) was 80 L for 26 days. Removal efficiency of TPH, As, and Ni were 61%, 36%, and 47%, respectively. The concentration of As was high near the anode due to the transport of anionic As toward the anode, while the concentration of Ni was high near the cathode by the movement of cationic Ni to the cathode. Field scale application of in-situ ozonation was carried out for removal of TPH in 3-D test cell (3 m$\times$2 m$\times$2 m). After 25 days of ozone injection, more than 80% of removal rate was observed through the test cell.
In this paper, the ozonizer is equipped with three electrodes ( two external electrodes, central electrode ), and AC high voltage which has 180[$180^{circ}C$] phase difference is applied to two H V. Ozone discharge and generation charactristics have been investigated in accordance with output voltage of power supply, flow-rate, discharge power. Ozone concentration, generation and yield were proportionally increased with increasing discharge area size.
In order to develovpment of new sterilizing method applied to food industry, effects of ozone treatment on microorganisms, associated with food hygiene were investigated. Microorganisms were immersed in water and sparged with ozonised air(ozone concentration, 3mg liter-1) at an air flow rate of 5 liter min-1. When organisms were treated with benzoic acid and sorbic acid of 0.4∼1.0g/$\ell$, respectively, they were not dectable perfectly. Sodium benzoate had an effect on Penicillium islandicum. When bacteria were sparged with ozonised air, Pseudomonas aeruginosa completely inhibited at 60 minutes, and the killing Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium islandicum. Also, all of bacteria were inactivated after immersed with ozonated water for 10minutes, but two fungal species were not effective.
