  • Combustion using oxygen enriched air is known as a technology which can increase flame stability as well as thermal efficiency due to improvement of the burning rate. Lift-off, blowout limit and flame length were examined as a function of jet velocity, coflow velocity and OEC(Oxygen Enriched Concentration). Blowout limit of the flame below OEC 25% decreased with coflow velocity, but the limit above OEC 25% increased inversely. Lift-off height decreased with increase of OEC. Especially lift-off hardly occurred in the condition above OEC 40%. Flame length of the flames above OEC 40% was increased until the blowout occurred. Flame stability became improved since lift-off and blowout limit increased much with increase of OEC.

  • In this work, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized using $N_2-diluted$ and Oxygen-enriched co-flow hydrogen diffusion flames. The effect of flame temperature on the crystalline structure of the formed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles was investigated. The measured maximum centerline temperature of the flame ranged from 2,103k for oxygen-enriched flame to 1,339K for $N_2-diluted$ flame. The visible flame length and the height of the main reaction zone were characterized by direct photographs. The crystalline structures of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were analyzed by XRD. From the XRD analysis, it was evident that the crystalline structures of the formed nanoparticles were divided into two sorts. In the higher temperature region, over the 1,700K, the fraction of formed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles having anatase-phase crystalline structure increased with increasing the flame temperature. On the contrary, in the lower temperature region, below the 1,600K, the fraction of anatase-phase nanoparticles increased with decreasing the flame temperature.

  • Combustion using oxygen enriched air is known as a technology which can increase thermal efficiency due to increase of the flame temperature. Flame shapes, schlieren photos, OH radical chemiluminescence and local flame temperature were examined as a function of OEC(Oxygen Enriched Concentration) in a coaxial non-premixed jet. With increase of OEC, flame length and width decreased, but its brightness increased significantly, and the size of vortices in the flame also increased. Especially, the reaction around the flame surface became active. The strong OH intensity appeared to be made and moved from middle stream to upper one with increase of OEC, which shows combustion reaction in the upper stream becomes more dominant In addition, the temperature distributions of the flames showed similar tendency with OH radical intensities. A flame with high temperature and strong stability was obtained with increasing OEC of the coflow.

  • Oxygen has been used extensively in various industries for many years. Despite earlier successful attempts to use oxygen in industrial combustion furnaces, its full theoretical researches have only recently begun to be realized. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of oxygen enriched combustion. This paper analyzes the characteristics of oxygen enriched combustion, and deals with the experimental investigation of the flame temperature and NOx concentration in exhaust gas. The flame temperature, concentration of exhaust gas were measured and flame configurations were photographed according to the variation of oxygen concentrations in oxidizer.

  • The NOx emission characteristics with oxygen enrichment in nonpremixed counterflow and coflow jet flame of $CH_4$ fuel have been investigated numerically. A small amount of nitrogen is included in oxygen-enriched combustion, in order to consider the inevitable $N_2$ contamination by air infiltration. The results show that the initial increase of NO with increasing oxygen enrichment is due to increasing temperature and residence time, while its subsequent decrease above 75% oxygen is due to decreasing the consumption rate of nitrogen. When oxygen addition exceeds 30%, Thermal NO gradually becomes the dominant production pathway and Prompt NO becomes negative pathway for net NO production rate. It is also seen that Thermal NO plays an important role in NO reduction when strain rate increase in oxygen-enriched combustion. Finally, the results of EINOx with oxygen enrichment in coflow jet flame show the similar profile with those of conterflow flame. It is confirmed that, with leakage of 1% nitrogen in the oxidizer stream, the corresponding EINOx is eight times of that emitted from regular $CH_4$/Air flame.

  • Numerical study is conducted to grasp the flame structure and NO emissions for a wide range of oxy-fuel combustion (covering from air blown combustion to pure oxygen combustion) and for various mole fractions of recirculated $CO_2$ in $CH4-O_2/N_2/CO_2$ counterflow diffusion flames. Special concern is given to the difference of the flame structure and NO emissions between air blown combustion and oxy-fuel combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$ and is also focused on chemical effects of recirculated $CO_2$. Air blown combustion and oxy-fuel combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$ are shown to be considerably different in the flame structure and NO emissions. Modified fuel oxidation reaction pathways in oxygen-enriched combustion are provided in detail compared to those in air blown combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$. The formation and destruction of NO through Fenimore and thermal mechanisms are also compared for air blown combustion and oxyegn-enriched combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$, and the role of the recirculated $CO_2$ and its chemical effects are discussed. Importantly contributing reaction steps to the formation and destruction of NO are also estimated in oxygen-enriched combustion in comparison to air blown combustion.

  • $CO_2$ is a well-known green house gas as well as the major source of global warming. Many researchers have studied to reduce $CO_2$ emission in combustion processes. Among the method for reducing $CO_2$ emission, oxygen-enriched combustion has been proposed. Because its adiabatic flame temperature is relatively too high, existing facilities must be changed or the flame temperature in the combustion zone should be reduced. The combustion characteristics, composition in the flame zone, temperature profile and emission gases were investigated experimentally for the various oxygen-enriched ratios(OER) by the addition of $CO_2$, under constant $O_2$ flow rate. Results showed that the reaction zone was quenched and broadened as the addition of $CO_2$ was increased. The emission of NOx in flue gas was decreased as decreasing temperature in reaction zone. It was also shown that the reaction was delayed by the cooling effect. As the addition of $CO_2$ was increased, the composition of CO in the flame zone was increased due to the increase of reaction rate by increasing mixing effect of oxidant/fuel at OER=0%, but the composition of CO was decreased by quenching effect at OER=50% and 100%.

  • In order to enhance combustion efficiency, oxygen-enriched combustion is used by increasing the oxygen ratio in the oxidizer. However, since the flame temperature increases, NOx formation in the furnace seriously increases for low oxygen enrichment ratio. In this case, reburning is a useful technology for reducing nitric oxide. In this research, experimental studies have been conducted to evaluate the hybrid effects of reburning/selective non-catalytic reaction (SNCR) and reburning/air staging on NOx formation and also to examine heat transfer characteristics in various oxygen-enriched LPG flames. Experiments were performed in flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which were mounted at the bottom of the furnace. Tests were conducted using LPG gas as main fuel and also as reburn fuel. The paper reported data on flue gas emissions, temperature distribution in furnace and various heat fluxes at the wall for a wide range of experimental conditions. Overall temperature in the furnace, heat fluxes to the wall and NOx generation were observed to increase by low level oxygen-enriched combustion, but due to its hybrid effects of reburning, SNCR and Air staging, NOx concentration in the exhaust have decreased considerably.
