  • Ozone is a powerful disinfectant and oxidizing agent, and it is used in a wide range of applications, such as waste water treatment, food processing, etc.. There is also a great potential of using ozone in new emerging medical applications, such as ozone dentistry and ozone oxygen therapy. For these purposes, simple, small, compact and efficient sources of ozone are needed. In this study, in order to increase the current-voltage range of the discharge and to avoid the overheating of the gas in the ozonizer we suggested ozonizer of injection needle and plate electrode type(INP Type) with the gas through the needle. A ozonizer of INP type have been investigated by focusing on ozone concentration and yield according to flow rates and Gap of two electrodes. The results of studies of ozone production for DC corona discharge in oxygen at atmospheric pressure about the ozonizer of INP type. The ozone concentration and the generation yield increased as the gap of two electrodes and gas flow were decreased. Also, when the gap of two electrodes and gas flow with no change, the ozone concentration and generation yield each have variation of direct proportion and inverse proportion with discharge voltage.

  • The flame retardancy was evaluated to present as the fundamental data to decrease the fire hazard of polymers and life losses according to the addition of clay. The combustion characteristics were examined to increase flame retardancy and to decrease smoke yield of epoxy by the addition of clay such as montmorillonite in this study. For this study, the experiments of flame retardancy were conducted the measurement of the limiting oxygen index (LOI), char yield, and smoke density. As MMT concentration increased, LOI and char yield increased. This result showed that the flame retardancy of epoxy/MMT composite was improved. On the contrary, smoke density increased.

  • Monolith aperture-type oxygen sensors with simple structure of YSZ(pin-hole)/Pt/ YSZ(solid electrolyte)/Pt were fabricated by co-firing technique. To enhance the yield of productivity, a couple of YSZ green sheets for diffused barrier and solid electrolyte were prepared by tape-casting and co-firing method. The limit current characteristics of the oxygen sensors were measured between 500 and $650^{\circ}C$ The heating temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ was optimum as a portable oxygen sensor in the range of oxygen concentration from 0 to 75 vol%. Linear proficiency of limit current behavior as a function of oxygen concentration was controlled by the variation of aperture dimension. The fabricated oxygen sensors showed the stable sensing output for 30 days. Gas leakage in bonding area due to warping, cracking and thermal cycling was not found in the period.

  • Combination of oxidative vacuum annealing and oxygen plasma treatment can serve as a simple and efficient method of line-width modification of imprinted nanopatterns. Since the vacuum annealing and oxygen plasma could lead mass loss of polymeric materials, either one of the process can yield a narrowed patterns. However, the vacuum annealing process usually demands quite high temperatures (${\geq}300^{\circ}C$) and extended annealing time to get appreciable line-width reduction. Although the plasma treatment may be considered as an effective low temperature rapid process for the line-width reduction, it is also suffering for the lowered controllability on application to very fine patterns. We have found that the vacuum annealing temperature can be lowered by introducing the oxygen in the vacuum process and that the combination of oxygen plasma treatment with the vacuum annealing could yield the best result in the line-with reduction of the imprinted polymeric nanopatterns. Well-defined line width reduction by more than 50% was successfully demonstrated at relatively low temperatures. Furthermore, it was verified that this process was applicable to the nanopatterns of different shapes and materials.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of pressure and dissolved oxygen concentration on the activated slut비e and to determine the optimum depth of deep shaft process. Some results from this study were summarized as follows. 1. It is considered that low sludge product in the activated sludge system maintaining high dissolved oxygen concentration is attributed to the increase of endogeneous respiration rate caused by the increase of aerobic zone in the sludge floe. 2. The increase of dissolved oxygen concentration does not affect to the increase of organic removal efficiency greatly and therefore the limiting factor is the substrate transfer into the inner part of floe. 3. The yield coefficient, Y is decreased in proportion to the increase of oxygen concentration. In this study, Y values arre ranged from 0.70 to 0.41 according to the variation of dissolved oxygen concentration from 18.0mg/$\ell$ to 258 mg/$\ell$. 4. The optimum depth of deep shaft process should be determined within the limits of non-toxicity to the microorganism and it is about loom in this study.

  • Photoreactions of pseudosaccharin ethers have been investigated. Pseudosaccharin 3-allyl ether undergoes a facile photoreaction via reaction pathways involving homolysis of bond between pseudosaccharyl oxygen and 3-allyl carbon, and excited nucleophilic substitution of allyloxy group by solvent which are not quenched by oxygen present in the reaction. Product yield demonstrates that the homolysis pathway predominates over the nucleophilic substitution in ca. 7:1 ratio. In contrast, pseudosaccharin alkyl ethers follow different reaction routes to produce two products, solvent-substituted pseudosaccharin alkyl ethers and reduction products, 3-alkoxy-1, 2-benzisothiazoles. The formations of reduction products, 3-alkoxy-1, 2-benzisothiazoles are completely quenched by oxygen.

  • In this study, a continuous stabilization process is used to make high-performance carbon fiber from polyacrylonitrile(PAM)-based fibers. The effect of oxygen content of PAN-based fiber on the stabilization process and the properties of the resultant carbon fibers is investigated. In order to research the progress of stabilization reaction FT-IR, elemental analysis, density, DSC, etc are used. Stabilization is carried out in air atmosphere from the 200 to $300^\circ{C}$ temperature range. An increase of PAN-based fibers diameter reduces the oxygen content during the continuous stabilization process. A higher oxygen content increase the density, tensile strength and modulus in the resultant carbon fibers. The most appropriate oxygen content in the stabilized fiber should be about 12%. Fibers having more than 2% oxygen content yield carbon fibers with inferior properties. Those carbon fibers also have sufficient commercial availability.

  • The effect of dissolved oxygen concentration on the metabolism of glucose in Pseudomonas putida BM014 was investigated. Glucose was completely converted to 2-ketogluconate via extracellular oxidative pathway and then taken up for cell growth under the condition of sufficient dissolved oxygen concentration. On the other hand, oxygen limitation below dissolved oxygen tension (DOT) value of 20% of air saturation caused the shift of glucose metabolism from the extracellular oxidative pathway to the intracellular phosphorylative pathway. Specific activities of hexokinase and gluconate kinase in intracellular phosphorylation pathway decreased as the DOT increased, while 2-ketogluconokinase activity in extracellular oxidative pathway increased under the same condition. This result can be usefully applied to microbial transformation of glucose to 2-ketogluconate, the synthetic precursor for iso-vitamine C, with almost 100% yield via extracellular oxidation by simple DOT control.

  • To examine the microenvironmental effect of DNA on the photosensitized reaction, the electron-donor-connecting porphyrin, meso-(9-phenanthryl)-tris(N-methyl-p-pyridinio) porphyrin (Phen-TMPyP), was synthesized. Phen-TMPyP can bind to oligonucleotides with two binding modes, depending on the DNA concentration. The fluorescence lifetime measurement of Phen-TMPyP shows a shorter component than that of the reference porphyrin without the phenanthryl moiety. However, the observed value is much longer than those of previously reported similar types of electron-donor-connecting porphyrins, suggesting that electron-transfer quenching by the phenanthryl moiety is not sufficient. The fluorescence quantum yield of Phen-TMPyP ($5{\mu}M$) decreased with an increase in DNA concentration of up to $5{\mu}M$ base pair (bp), possibly due to self-quenching through an aggregation along the DNA strand, increased with an increase in DNA concentration of more than $5{\mu}M$ bp and reached a plateau. The fluorescence quantum yield of Phen-TMPyP with a sufficient concentration of DNA was larger than that of the reference porphyrin. The singlet oxygen ($^1O_2$) generating activity of Phen-TMPyP was confirmed by the near-infrared emission spectrum measurement. The quantum yield of $^1O_2$ generation was decreased by a relatively small concentration of DNA, possibly due to the aggregation of Phen-TMPyP, and recovered with a sufficient concentration of DNA. The recovered quantum yield was rather smaller than that without DNA, indicating the quenching of $^1O_2$ by DNA. These results show that a DNA strand can stabilize the photoexcited state of a photosensitizer and, in a certain case, suppresses the $^1O_2$ generation.

  • The expanding copper mandrel test performed at three strain rates (3.2$\times$10E -5/s, 2.0$\times$10E-6/s and 1.2$\times$10E-7/s) over 553-873 K temperature range by varying the heating rates (8-1$0^{\circ}C$/s, 1-2$^{\circ}C$/s and 0.5$^{\circ}C$/s) in air and in vacuum (5$\times$10E-5 torr). The yield stress peak, the strain rate sensitivity minimum and the activation volume peaks could be explained in terms of the dynamic strain aging. The activation energy for dynamic strain aging obtained from the yield stress peak temperature and strain rate was 196 KJ/mol and this value was in good agreement with the activation energy for oxygen diffusion in $\alpha$-zirconium and Zircaloy-2 (207-220 KJ/mol). Therefore, oxygen atoms are responsible for the dynamic strain aging which appeared between 573 K and 673 K. The yield stress increase due to the oxidation was obtained by comparing the yield stress in air with that in vacuum and represented by the percentage increase of yield stress ( $\sigma$$^{a}$ $_{y}$ - $\sigma$$^{v}$ $_{y}$ / $\sigma$$^{v}$ $_{y}$ ). The slower the strain rate, the greater the percentage increase occurs. In order to estimate the yield stress of PWR fuel cladding material under the service environment, the yield stress in water was obtained by comparing the oxidation rate in air that in water assuming the relationship between the oxygen pick-up amount and the yield stress increase.
