This study was carried out to investigate of aerobic granulation by using sequencing batch reactor(SBR). To make aerobic granular sludge in short period of time, we used polymer. In case of SBR, we have studied on physicochemical characteristics of particle size, settling velocity, surface charge, and specific oxygen utilization rate(SOUR) depending on aerobic particle's formation. The results of running SBR with $5.4kg{\cdot}COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ of COD loading rate and 20 days reaction time showed that aerobic particle size, settling velocity, SOUR, surface charge, polysaccharide/protein(PS/PN) ratio were 2.6 mm, 1.7 cm/s, $346mg{\cdot}O_2/g{\cdot}MLVSS{\cdot}hr,\;(-)0.26{\cdot}meq/g{\cdot}MLVSS$, and 2.06 mg/mg respectively.

The relationship between bacteria and anaerobic archaea, sludge yield coefficient and nitrogen removal rate were investigated in intermittent aeration systems(I/A) with added archaea, I/A and conventional activated sludge system. As the archaea solution was added to the I/A reactor, organic removal rate as well as nitrogen removal rate increased. Also, sludge production rate in I/A system added the archaea was maintained lower than other systems because sludge yield coefficient was decreased due to the role of anaerobic archaea such as anaerobic degradation of organics. The experimental data supported the possibility of symbiotic activated sludge system with anaerobic archaea under intermittent aeration, leading to the enhanced nitrogen removal. Crucial results to be presented are: 1) specific oxygen utilization rate(SOUR) of the I/A-arch system was $2.9\;mg-O_2/(g-VSS{\cdot}min)$. SOUR and nitrification rate of the sludge from the I/A-arch system was higher than those from the I/A and A/S reactors. 2) Removal efficiencies of $TCOD_{Cr}$ in the I/A-arch, I/A and A/S reactors were 93, 90 and 87%, respectively. 3) Nitrification occurred successfully in each reactor, while denitrification rate was much higher in the I/A-arch reactor. Efficiencies of TN removal in the I/A-arch, I/A and A/S reactors were 75, 63 and 33%, respectively.

Approx. 200,000 bpd vacuum residue oil is produced from oil refineries in Korea. These are supplying to use asphalt, high sulfur fuel oil, and upgrading at the residue hydro-desulfurization unit. Vacuum residue oil has high energy content, however high sulfur content and high concentration of heavy metals represent improper low grade fuel. To meet growing demand for effective utilization of vacuum residue oil from refineries, recently some of the oil refinery industries in Korea, such as SK oil refinery and LG Caltex refinery, have already proceeded feasibility study to construct 435-500 MWe IGCC power plant and hydrogen production facilities. Recently, KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) are studing on the Vacuum Residue gasification process using an oxygen-blown entrained-flow gasifier. The experiment runs were evaluated under the reaction temperature : 1,100~1,25$0^{\circ}C$, reaction pressure : 1~6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$G, oxygen/V.R ratio : 0.8~0.9 and steam/V.R ratio : 0.4-0.5. Experimental results show the syngas composition(CO+H$_2$) : 85~93%, syngas flow rate : 50~110Mm$^3$/hr, heating value : 2,300~3,000 ㎉/Nm$^3$, carbon conversion : 65~92, cold gas efficiency : 60~70%. Also equilibrium modeling was used to predict the vacuum residue gasification process and the predicted values were compared reasonably well with experimental data.

Utilization and interest of unconventional fuel and process residue such as oil sand and its residue, oil sand coke, have been increased because of the continuous rise of fuel price and conventional fuel availability. In this study, the gasification of oil sand coke produced from coking process of oil sand was performed to utilize as an energy resource using lab-scale fixed bed gasification system. The combustion characteristics of oil sand bitumen and oil sand coke were investigated by using TGA and lab-scale gasification system was applied to reveal the characteristics of produced syngas composition with oxygen/fuel ratio, temperature and steam injection rate. Oil sand coke shows a high carbon content, heating value and sulfur content and low ash content and reactivity. In case of oil sand coke gasification, generally with increasing temperature, the amount of steam introduced and decreasing oxygen injection rate, $H_2$ content in product gas increased while the $CO_2$ content decreased. The calorific value of syngas shows about $2100kcal/Nm^3$ and this result indicates that the oil sand coke can be used as a resource of hydrogen and fuel.

Among the fossil fuels, the brown coal is a great deal of resources. However, it is hardly used due to the high moisture content and low calorific value. It has both the week points such as spontaneous combustion and high volatile content and the strong points such as the low-sulfur and low ash content. If we overcome these week points, the using amount of brown coal would be increased. Also, it is well known that biomass is one of the important primary renewable energy sources because of carbon neutral energy. Furthermore, the utilization of biomass has been more and more concerned with the depletion of fossil fuel sources as well as the global warming issues. Combustion and thermal decomposition of biomass is one of the more promising techniques among all alternatives proposed for the production of energy from biomass. In this study, combustion of brown coals and mushroom waste was done. Mass change of samples and emission of hydrocarbon components were measured. As the results, we obtained combustion rate constant. Also activation energy was calculated in char combustion step. Hydrocarbon components were more generated in low oxygen concentration than high. Emission amount of hydrocarbon components in mushroom waste was significantly increased comparing to brown coal.
To verify the utilization of biomass as energy, the combustion characteristic has been studied by an experimental combustion furnace under an isothermal and non-isothermal combustion. The wood pellet, rice straw and rice husk were used as biomass samples in this work. The characteristics of emission gases, dusts and residues from biomass combustion have been analyzed and compared with those of reuse derived fuel (RDF). From isothermal combustion experiments, it was found that the incomplete combustion of rice straw was greater that that of rice husk, wood pellet and RDF. This is due to the fact that the combustion reaction rate of the rice straw was faster than that of other samples, and the oxygen concentration in rice straw combustion was rapidly decreasing. It was also found that $NO_{X}$ concentration of emission gas from wood pellet combustion was the lowest. From non-isothermal combustion experiments, it was found that all samples were burned before $900^{\circ}C$. Also, the temperature range of $NO_{X}$ emission was similar to that of CO emission, on the other hand, $SO_{2}$ was emitted at a higher temperature than that of CO emission.
To verify the utilization of fluff refuse derived fuel (RDF) as energy source, the combustion charateristic has been studied by an experimental combustion furnace under various temperatures. The characteristics of flue gas, dust and residue from fluff RDF combustion has been analyzed and compared with those of pelletized RDF. From this work, it was found that the incomplete combustion of fluff RDF was greater than that of pelletized RDF because the combustion reaction rate of fluff RDF was faster than that of pelletized RDF, and oxgen concentration in fluff RDF combustion decreased rapidly. It was also found that carbon monoxide concentration of flue gas from fluff RDF combustion increased with combustion temperature because the oxygen consumption and the incomplete combustion increased. Therefore, it is felt that the combustion operation conditions of fluff RDF should be carefully determined.
The objective of the present investigation was to obtain vitamin, mineral, flavonoid, and polyphenol profiles of Rudbeckia laciniata (RL), and to examine the effects of extract of RL (RLE) on various physiological activities of HaCaT keratinocyte for the utilization of RL as natural raw materials to develop functional food. To accomplish this purpose, we checked the contents of the general nutrients of RL. The contents of vitamin A, vitamin $B_1$ and vitamin $B_2$ were $7.49{\mu}g/g$, $51.96{\mu}g/g$, and $132{\mu}g/g$ respectively, while vitamin C and vitamin $D_3$ were not detected. The contents of mineral such as Ca, K and Fe were 2.01 mg/g, 6.06 mg/g and 0.03 mg/g respectively. Total flavonoid contents of RLE were 0.25 mg/g, and total polyphenol were estimated as 1.43 mg/g. Because RL contains high levels of vitamin A which is associated with skin aging, we investigated the effect of RLE on physiological function of keratinocytes with respect to skin aging. We found that RLE significantly increased the growth rate of HaCaT cells and reduced ultraviolet radiation B (UVB)-induced cellular toxicity. Also, the extract of Rudbeckia laciniata attenuated the UVB-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in a dose-dependent manner in HaCaT cells. In addition, treatment with the extract dose-dependently increased migration activity of HaCaT cells. Thus, these findings indicated that RLE could regulate the physiological activity of keratinocytes, and may be used to develop functional foods.
The effects of $^{60}Co-{\gamma}$ radiation on the change of composition and susceptibility to soft rot during the storage of sweetpototoes and the radioresistance of spores of the soft rot fungus were investigated and the following results were obtained. 1) Gamma-irradiation of sweetpotatoes caused the increase in water-soluble sugar content and the decrease in ascorbic acid content during the storage. 2) The rate of oxygen uptake in sweetpotato slices becomes higher as the dose increases. But the oxygen uptake in slices irradiated with higher doses decreases along with the color change as the time passes. 3) Irradiation with high doses (above $2.5{\times}10^5$ rad) brought about the increased susceptibility to soft rot decay as the chilling injury did in the storage of sweetpotatoes. 4) Average lethal dose for the spores of Rhizopus nigricans was $3.0{\times}10^5$ rad and the complete death required the level of $1.25{\times}10^6$ rad.
