Background: The oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) is the most important index for accurately measuring cardiopulmonary function in patients with acute ischemic heart disease. However, the relationship between the OUES variables and important cardiopulmonary function parameters remain unelucidated for patients with acute ischemic heart disease, which accounts for the largest proportion of heart disease. Objects: The present cross sectional clinical study aimed to determine the multiple relationships among the cardiopulmonary function variables mentioned above in adults with acute ischemic heart disease. Methods: A convenience sample of 110 adult inpatients with ischemic heart disease (age: 57.4 ± 11.3 y; 95 males, 15 females) was enrolled at the hospital cardiac rehabilitation center. The correlation between the important cardiopulmonary function indicators including peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak), minute ventilation (VE)/carbon dioxide production (VCO2) slope, heart rate recovery (HRR), and ejection fraction (EF) and OUES was confirmed. Results: This study showed that OUES was highly correlated with VO2 peak, VE/VCO2 slope, and HRR parameters. Conclusion: The OUES can be used as an accurate indicator for cardiopulmonary function. There are other factors that influence aerobic capacity besides EF, so there is no correlation with EF. Effective cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs can be designed based on OUES during submaximal exercise in patients with acute ischemic heart disease.
Analysis of Production of Thermostable Alkaline Protease using Thermoactinomyces sp. E79. Jung, Sang Won, Sung-Sik Park, Yong-Cheol Park" Tae Kwang Oh2, and Jin-Ho Seo*, Department of Food Science and Technology, Seoul National University, Suwon 441-744, Korea, 1lnterdisciplinary program [or Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology, Seoul National Univer5it}~ Seoul 151 "7421 Koreal 2Microbial Enzyme RU, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology, Po. Box 1151 Yusong, Taejon 305"6001 Korea - This research was undertaken to analyze fermentation properties of Thermoactinomyces sp. E79 for production of a thermostable alkaline protease, which is able to specifically hydrolyze defatted soybean meal (DSM) to amino acids. TIle optimum pH for cell growth and protease production was pH 6.7, Thermoactinomyces sp. E79 did not grow at pHlO Among carbon sources tested, soluble starch was the best for protease production, while glucose repressed protease production. Tryptone was found to be the best nitrogen source for cell growth and soytone was good tor protease production. Oxygen transfer rate played an important role in producing thermostable alkaline protease. Ma'<..imum values of 6.58 glL of dry cell weight and 43.0 UJmL of protease activity were obtained in a batch fermentation using a 2.5 L jar fermentor at 1.93 X 102 hr-l of volumetric oxygen transfer coeff'jcient (kLa). Addition of 200 mgIL humic acid to the growth medium resulted in 1.64 times higher protease activity and 1.77 times higher cell growth than the case without humic acid addition.

A study on the modeling of the methane Chemical Looping Reforming system was carried out. It is aimed to predict the temperature and concentration behavior of the product through modeling of oxygen carrier fixed bed reactors composed of multiple stacks. In order to design the reaction system, first of all, the flow rate of the hydrogen to be produced was calculated. The flow rate ratio of the oxidation/reduction reactor was calculated considering the heat of reaction between adjacent reactors. Finally, in this paper, kinetic model including empirical coefficients was suggested.
Dissolved oxygen (DO) and shear stress have pronounced effects on hyaluronic acid (HA) production, yet various views persist about their effects on the molecular weight of HA. Accordingly, this study investigated the effects of DO and shear stress during HA fermentation. The results showed that both cell growth and HA synthesis were suppressed under anaerobic conditions, and the HA molecular mass was only $(1.22{\pm}0.02){\times}10^6 Da$. Under aerobic conditions, although the DO level produced no change in the biomass or HA yield, a high DO level favored the HA molecular mass, which reached a maximum value of $(2.19{\pm}0.05){\times}10^6 Da$ at 50% DO. Furthermore, a high shear stress delayed the rate of HA synthesis and decreased the HA molecular weight, yet had no clear effect on the HA yield. Therefore, a high DO concentration and mild shear environment would appear to be essential to enhance the HA molecular weight.

Gas barrier coating from dense thin film deposition has been one of the important applications such as food-packaging and organic display. Especially for food-packaging, plastic container has been widely used due to its low price and high through-put in mass production. However, the plastic container with low surface energy like polypropylene (PP) has been limited to apply gas barrier coating. That is because a gas barrier coating could not adhere to PP due to its too low surface energy and high porosity of PP. In this research, we applied carbon coating consisting of Si and O as an interlayer between silicon oxide (SiOx) and PP. A carbon layer was found to provide better adhesion, which was experimentally proved by oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and SEM images. However, we also found that there is a limitation in the maximum thickness of a carbon layer and SiOx film due to their high stress level. For this conflict, we obtain the optimal thickness of a carbon layer and SiOx film showing optimal gas barrier property.

Methanol was directly produced by the partial oxidation of methane with four-component mixed oxide catalysts. Four-component(Mo-Bi-Cr-Si) mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation and sol-gel methods. The catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method showed about eleven times higher surface area than that prepared by the co-precipitation method. From the $O_2$-TPD experiment of the prepared catalysts, it was proven that there exists two types of oxygen species, and the oxygen species that participates in the partial oxidation reaction is the lattice oxygen desorbing around $750^{\circ}C$. The optimum reaction condition for methanol production was $420^{\circ}C$, 50 bar, flow rate of 115 mL/min, and $CH_4/O_2$ ratio of 10/1.5, providing methane conversion and methanol selectivity of 3.2 and 26.7%, respectively.
The alcohol fermentation was carried out to study the effect of aeration and unsaturated fatty acids added on the ethanol tolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae STV89 and Kluyveromyces fragilis CBS397. The cell growth rate and ethanol production rate was stimulated by aeration and the cell mass production and ethanol production were also substantially improved. With respect to strains, the maximum specific growth rate and overall ethanol productivity of K. fragilis under aerated condition were 6.4 fold and 4.4 fold higher than those of strictly anaerobic condition, although those of S. cerevisiae were increased 1.7 times and 2.3 times by aeration. The addition of ergosterol, linoleic acid and oleic acid also improved the cell growth and ethanol production of S. cerevisiae and K. fragilis. Thus it was found that oxygen and unsaturated fatty acids added played a decisive role on the increase of ethanol tolerance of yeast strains.

For the silicon oxide $(SiO_x)$ films prepared by using the facing target sputtering (FTS) apparatus that was manufactured to enhance the preciseness of the fabricated thin-film and sputtering yield rate by forming a higher-density plasma in the electrical discharge space for using it as a thin-film passivation system for flexible organic light emitting devices (FOLEDs). The deposition characteristics were investigated under various process conditions, such as array of the cathode magnets, oxygen concentration$(O_2/Ar+O_2)$ introduced during deposition, and variations of distance between two targets and working pressure. We report that the optimum conditions for our FTS apparatus for the deposition of the $SiO_x$ films are as follows: $d_{TS}\;and\;d_{TT}$ are 90mm and 120mm, respectively and the maximum deposition rate is obtained under a gas pressure of 2 mTorr with an oxygen concentration of 3.3%. Under this optimum conditions, it was found that the $SiO_x$ film was grown with a very high deposition rate of $250{\AA}$/min by rf-power of $4.4W/cm^2$, which was significantly enhanced as compared with a deposition rate (${\sim}55{\AA})$/min) of the conventional sputtering system. We also reported that the FTS system is a suitable method for the high speed and the low temperature deposition, the plasma free deposition, and the mass-production.

Nickel based oxygen transfer materials supported on two different YSZs were tested to evaluate their performance in methane chemical-looping reforming. The oxygen transfer materials of YSZs were selected with different amount of the doped yittrium in the $ZrO_2$ structure. The yittrium of 8 mol% stabilized the zirconia oxide to a cubic structure compare to the 3 mol% doping, which is known to be a good for oxygen transfer. Various nickel amounts (16wt.%, 32wt.%, 48wt.%) were loaded on the selected supports. The nickel amount of 32% shows the optimized catalyst structure with good physical properties and reducibility from the XRD, BET and H2-TPR analysis, especially when the support of 8YSZ was used. From the methane chemical-looping reforming, hydrogen was produced by methane decomposition catalyzed by Ni on both YSZs. Comparing two YSZ supports of 3YSZ and 8YSZ during the cycling tests, the catalyst with 8YSZ (Ni 32%) exhibits not only the higher methane conversion and hydrogen production but also a faster reaction rate reaching to the stable point.
Objective : Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Etiological studies of diabetes and its complications showed that oxidative stress might playa major role. Therefore, many efforts have been made to regulate oxygen free radicals for treating diabetes and its complications. Because Jindangwon has been known to be effective in treatment of diabetes, the methanol extract of Jindangwon was tested for its effectiveness in reducing the oxidative stress induced by Streptozotocin. Methods : Jindangwon was washed, dried in the shade and crushed. The crushed Jindangwon was extracted 3 times, each time with 3 volumes of methyl alcohol at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The extract was filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure using a rotary evaporator to yield 30.6 g. Jindangwon extract was oral-administered to the diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin 50 mg per 1 kg of body weight for 15 days. The efficacy of the Jindangwon extract was examined with regard to the enzymatic pathways involved in the oxygen free radical production and the glutathione balance. Results : he effects of the methanol extract of Jindangwon in streptozotocin-induced diabetics rats with regard to body weight, blood glucose level, hepatic lipid peroxide level, hepatic xanthine oxidase activity and type conversion rate, hepatic glutathione level, hepatic glutathione peroxidase activity, hepatic glutathione reductase activity, hepatic aldose reductase activity, and hepatic sorbitol dehydrogenase activity were favorable enough to suggest that it is a cure for diabetes and its complications. Conclusions :These results support Jindangwon as an effective reducing agent for oxidative stress in the tissues and organs by regulating the production of oxygen free radicals. Jindangwon, in particular, shows promising results for its use as a cure, or preventative medicine for diabetes and its complications by reducing oxidative stress in beta-cells of the pancreas.
