Hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios of thirteen of the under 2 micron size fraction of the montmorillonites were measured. The oxygen isotopic compositions of these samples range from + 17.0 to +25.1 permil and the hydrogen isotope compositions range from -47.5 to -65.8 permil with an average standard deviation of 0.7 and 2.7 permil, respectively. The oxygen isotope compositions show a positive relationship with stratigraphy whereas the hydrogen isotope compositions do not. It suggest that the montmorillonite attained isotopic equilibrium at the maximum burial depth and ratained their oxygen isotope composition on subsequent uplift. Possibilities of montmorillonite formation by weathering or hydrothermal alteration of volcanic material are eliminated by the ${\delta}D$ and ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of these samples. Calculated formation temperature lie between 29 to $80^{\circ}C$.
This study examined the geochemical characteristics, equilibrium temperature and pressure conditions, and oxygen isotopic ratios of mantle xenoliths from the various geological sites of the Korean peninsula. The results are as follows: (1) The ultramafic xenoliths from the Korean peninsula mainly consist of typical high magnesium olivine (MgO : 49.12-50.95 wt.%, Mg value: 90.1-92.2), corresponding to worldwide Cenozoic ultramafic xenoliths in chemical compositions. (2) The pressure-temperature conditions of ultramafic xenoliths in the Korean peninsula are from 854 to $1016^{\circ}C$ and 4.6 to 24.4 kbar. (3) The oxygen isotopic ratios (${\delta}^{18}O$) for olivines in ultramafic xenoliths range from 5.06‰ to 5.51‰, which are relatively uniform oxygen isotopic values and overlapped by the values of N-MORB and upper mantle peridotite (${\delta}^{18}O$: $5.2{\pm}0.2$‰). However, olivines of the ultramafic xenoliths from the Baegdusan and Chejudo have a relatively wide ${\delta}^{18}O$ values ranging from 5.07 to 5.51‰ and 5.07 to 5.45‰, respectively. Based on the results, this study suggests that the high ${\delta}^{18}O$ signature of the Baegdusan xenoliths give a hint that ~5% of the oxygen in typical EM2 sources originally derived from recycled sediments.
The original environment of the solar system can be inferred by studying the oxygen isotope ratios in the Sun as well as in primitive meteorites and comets. The oxygen isotopic fractionation measured in primitive meteorites is mass-independent, which can be explained by the isotopic-selective photodissociation of CO. The isotopic-selective photodissociation model in a collapsing cloud by Lee et al. (2007) imply the birth of the Sun in a stellar cluster with an enhanced radiation field, which is consistent with the inferred presence of $^{60}Fe$.

The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition in precipitation, groundwater and geothermal water were monitored over four-year period from 2001 to 2004 at the Yuseong catchment, Daejeon. By analyzing the long term rainfall pattern, we found out the drought cycle of 6 or 7 year. We fortunately revealed that the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of rain has progressively changed to heavier isotopic ratios from 2001 to 2004. The weighted mean values of ${\delta}^{18}O\;and\;{\delta}D$ of rain are calculated to be $-7.7%o\;and\;-51%o$, respectively. These isotopic values are much heavier than those of groundwater and geothermal water collected at the same period, which indicates that the rain or snow of the study area would not immediately affect the isotopic composition of groundwater or geothermal water. Comparing with the previous data, the groundwater and geothermal water collected at 1990 and 1992 year has the heaviest isotopic composition and afterwards their isotopic composition has been progressively shifted to the direction of lighter composition field.
The purpose of this study is to identify the temporal and spatial variation of stable isotopic compositions of surface waters and shallow ground waters at a local watershed(100$Km^2$) near the Muju area. For oxygen and hydrogen isotope analysis, water samples were collected from 19-22 sites during August, October 2001, through April 2002. Seasonal variation in the isotopic compositions of surface waters was clearly shown. However, the degree of such isotopic variation was highly attenuated in shallow ground waters because of mixing with preexisting ground waters. Isotope values of surface waters and ground waters were very similar in each season, indicating that precipitation/ground water/surface water interactions were very active and continuous in the watershed. Stable isotopic ratios of surface waters in the study area were lighter than those of the downstream reach of Geum River on south, indicating “latitude effect”. Both “altitude effect” and “amount effect” were also shown in the stable isotopic ratios of surface waters in the study area as well as seasonal variation of stable isotopes.

Serpentinite rocks which are composed mainly of olivine, serpentine and clinopyroxene, cropped out in the anorogenic Kyongsang sedimentary basin of South Korea. The serpentinites contain high content of MgO (36.87~41.99%) and 47~67 ppm Co, 1185~2042 ppm Ni and 979~3582 ppm Cr, which are quite similar to those of ultrabasic rocks such as peridotite and dunite. Isotopic compositions of serpentinites range from -95.5 to -105.7‰ in ${\delta}D$ and +1.7 to 7.1‰ in ${\delta}^{18}O$ corresponding to the continental antigorite type. A wide variation of oxygen isotopic values and $H_2O^+$ content of serpentinites reflect the different water/rock ratios during serpentinization processes. Formation temperature of serpentine minerals are estimated to be unusually high temperature of $488{\sim}646^{\circ}C$ by serpentine-magnetite isotopic fractionation, which belong to continental antigorite type. Calculated ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of serpentinized fluid during serpentinization is suggested that the hydrothermal fluid responsible for serpentinization be originated from the magmatic fluid with a minor influx of paleo-meteoric water in this area.
A couple of Au-Ag-bearing epithermal quartz veins of Cretaceous(87.9Ma) in age are developed in the Cretaceous(112Ma) granodiorite batholith which was emplaced in Mesozoic Baegyari sedimentary formation. Au minerals consist mostly of electrum with a 54.2-61.9 wt% Au and are closely associated with sulfide minerals including pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, galena and sphalerite. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions in quartz, fluorite and calcite are $196-368^{\circ}C$ (avg. $240^{\circ}C$), $74-176^{\circ}C$ (avg. $115^{\circ}C$) and $75-200^{\circ}C$ (avg. $119^{\circ}C$) respectively. Sulfur isotopic compositions( +5- +8‰) of ore sulfides indicate a deep-seated sulfur origin. Oxygen isotope compositions of different stages of quartz vary from +5.6 to +9.3‰ and calculated ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of ore fluid at $250^{\circ}C$ range from -3.2 to +0.4‰, reflecting an isotopically evolved ore fluid mixed with a $^{18}O$ depleted meteoric water under the variable mixing ratios between hydrothermal and meteoric waters. Isotopic data of calcite minerals support the above conclusions.
To delineate Late Pleistocene paleoceanographic change of the West Pacific, we analyzed the oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios of two planktonic foraminifera species (G. sacculifer and N. dutertrei) from a piston core (KODOS-313) taken from the West equatorial Pacific, and they are compared with the published results of the East Pacific (ODP site 847 and RC 11-210), in terms of relative amounts and mass accumulation rates of $CaCO_3$ and eolian component, back to marine isotopic stage (MIS) 6. Differences in oxygen and carbon isotope values between two foraminifear species ($0.75%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{18}O$, $0.05%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{13}C$) are less than those of the East Pacific ($1.30%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{18}O$, $0.14%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{13}C$), which indicates smaller vertical contrasts in both temperature and nutrient between mixing-zone and thermocline in the West Pacific. Strong deviation in${\delta}^{18}O$ of G. sacculifer from SPECMAP suggests the carbonate fraction of KODOS-313 was subjected to partial dissolution by bottom water under lysocline. Lower accumulation rates of $CaCO_3$ and eolian component during glacial times are likely due to low sedimentation rate (ave. 0.75 cm/1000 yr) combined with carbonate dissolution in KODOS-313 site. However, the high $CaCO_3$ contents during the glacial periods clearly follow the general pattern of equatorial Pacific ocean.

Two assertions about the process the formation of the high-purity limestone in the Taebaeksan Basin, categorized into syngenetic and epigenetic origin, are verified on the basis of its oxygen-carbon stable isotopic characteristics. The carbonate rocks sampled from the selective six high-purity limestone mines and several outcrops in the Daegi formation are featured by various colors such as the gray, light gray and dark gray. They show a wide range of oxygen stable isotope ratios (4.5 ~ 21.6 ‰), but a narrow range of carbon stable isotope ratios (-1.1 ~ 0.8 ‰, except for vein calcite), which means that they had not experienced strong hydrothermal alteration. In addition, there is no difference in the range of the oxygen stable isotope ratios by mine and color, and it is similar to the range from surrounding outcrop samples. These results indicate that the effect of the hydrothermal alteration were negligible in the generation of high-purity limestone in deposit scale. Whereas, the carbonate rocks can be divided texturally into two groups on the basis of an oxygen isotope ratio; the massive-textured or well-layered samples (>15 ‰), and the layer-disturbed (or layer-destructed) and showing over two colors in one sample (<15 ‰). In the multi-colored samples, the bright parts are characterized by the very low oxygen stable isotope ratios, compared to the dark parts, implying the increase in brightness of the carbonate rocks could be induced by the interaction between hydrothermal fluid and rock. However, these can be applied in a small scale such as one sample and are not suitable for interpretation of the generation of high-purity limestone as a deposit scale. In particular, the high oxygen isotope ratios from the recrystallized white limestone suggest that hydrothermal fluids are also rarely involved during recrystallization process. In addition, the occurrences of the high-purity limestone orebody strongly support the high-purity limestone in the area are syngenetic rather than epigenetic; the high-purity limestone layers in the area show continuous and almost horizontal shapes, and is intercalated between dolomite layers. Consequently, the overall reinterpretation based on the sequential stratigraphy over the Taebaeksan basin would play an important role to find additional reserves of the high-purity limestone.
This study examined hydrogeological characteristics of groundwater and surface water interaction in the fresh-saline water mixed zone of East Coast lagoon area, Korea, using several technical approaches including hydrological, lithological, and isotopic methods. In addition, the fresh-saline water interface was evaluated using vertical electrical conductivity (EC) data. For this purpose, three monitoring wells (SJ-P1, SJ-P2, and SJ-P3) were installed across the Songji lagoon at depths of 7.4 to 9.0 m, and water level, EC, and temperature at the wells and in the lagoon (SJ-L1) were monitored using automatic transducers from August 1 to October 21, 2021. Isotopic composition of the groundwater, lagoon water, and sea water were also monitored in the mid-September, 2013. The mixing ratios calculated from oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition decreased with increasing depth in the monitoring wells, indicating saline water intrusion. In the study area, the interaction of groundwater-surface water-sea water was evident, and residual salinity in the sedimentary layers created in the past marine environment showed disorderly characteristics. Moreover, the horizontal flow at the lagoon's edge was more dominant than the vertical flow.
