The preparation of composite powders for plasma spraying by an in-house designed mechanofusion process is investigated. Results show that dry particle coating depends on the chemical and mechanical properties of powders. In metal/oxide and metal/oxide/carbide powder mixtures, fine ceramic particles coat the surface of the metallic coarser particles. A nearly rounded shape of the final composite particles is induced by the mechanical energy input with no formation of new phases. However with the carbide/metal powdered system, only an intimate mixture of components is achieved. It is suggested that the coating mechanism is governed by agglomeration and rolling phenomena.
Modified polymeric composite electrodes having highly dispersed CuO particles through the electrode matrix were prepared for LCEC or flow injection analysis of carbohydrates. The composite electrodes were prepared by incorporating carbon black and highly dispersed copper oxide particles in polystyrene matrix cross-linked with divinylbenzene. The analytical characteristics of the electrodes for LCEC and flow injection analysis of carbohydrates were evaluated. Improved performance in LCEC and flow injection analysis of carbohydrates is demonstrated in terms of sensitivity, reproducibility, stability and surface renewability. It was possible to get improved performance of the electrodes as well as adaptability of the electrodes for practical applications by employing highly dispersed catalyst particles through the electrode matrix and robust polymeric electrode matrix.

Static stability behaviors of annular sandwich plates constructed from two layers of particle-reinforced nanocomposites have been investigated in the present article. The type of nanoscale particles has been considered to be graphene oxide powders (GOPs). The particles are assumed to have uniform and graded dispersions inside the matrix and the material properties have been defined according to Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model. The core layer is assumed to have honeycomb configuration. Annular plate has been formulated according to thin shell assumptions considering geometrical nonlinearities. After solving the governing equations via Galerkin's technique, it is showed that the post-buckling curves of annular sandwich plates rely on the core wall thickness, amount of GOP particles, sector radius, and thickness of layers.
This study is conducted as a preliminary research to verify the feasibility of Ti-based Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy. Pure-Ti powder is mixed with $Y_2O_3$ powder and subsequently, mechanically alloyed at $-150^{\circ}C$. The Ti-based ODS powder is hot-isostatically pressed and subsequently hot-rolled for recrystallization. The microstructure consists of elongated grains and Y excess fine particles. The oxide particle size is larger than that of the typical Fe-based ODS steel. Tensile test shows that the tensile ductility is approximately 25%, while the strength is significantly higher than that of pure Ti. The high-temperature hardness of the Ti-ODS alloy is also significantly higher than that of pure Ti at all temperatures, while being lower than that of Ti-6Al-4V. The dimple structure is well developed, and no evidence of cleavage fracture surface is observed in the fracture surface of the tensile specimen.

Mixed-conducting oxide powders, $BaCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ (BCY) and $SrCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ (SCY) powders have been prepared by a solid-state reaction method. Xray diffraction patterns of the prepared powders showed the sharp peaks of the $BaCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ and $SrCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ phases. The oxide powders that were prepared by attrition milling showed rather large particles and severe necking between particles in FE-SEM images as well as residual reactant ($BaCO_3$) and secondary phases ($SrCeO_3$ and $CeO_2$) in XRD patterns. The oxide powders prepared using ball milling showed particles under approximately 500 nm and typical XRD patterns of the $BaCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ and $SrCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ phases. Ceramic membranes of the $BaCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ and $SrCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{2.95}$ phases were fabricated by the aerosol deposition method using the oxide powders synthesized.
Tin oxide ($SnO_2$) nanoparticles have been synthesized by solution combustion method using citric acid as a fuel. The oxide to fuel ratio has been varied to obtain ultrafine nanoparticles with better surface area; such particles will be useful in many applications. With this synthesis method, spherical particles are formed having a particle size in the range of 11-30 nm and BET surface area of ~ $24m^2/g$. The degree of agglomeration of $SnO_2$ nanoparticles has been calculated.
Sub-micron colloidal silica particles coated with nano-sized ceria were prepared by mixing of its silica and cerium salts hydrolysis, and modified by hydrothermal reaction. By using the slurries with and without hydrothermal modification containing above particles, oxide film coated on silicon wafer was polished. The modified slurries had higher polish rate due to increase of ceria fraction to silica through hydrothermal reaction. They revealed higher stability in wide range of pH $2\~10$ than ceria coated silica slurries without its modification.
Magnetic nanoparticles have been investigated for use as biomedical purposes for several years. For biomedical applications the use of particles that present superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature is preferred [1-4]. To control the magnetic materials by magnetic field is essential locate particle to the suitable destination on feeding by injection. In order to use them properly, the particles should be nano size. However there are many difficulties in applications, because there is lack of identifications in nano magnetic properties. In our studies, structural and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles were investigated by XRD, VSM, TEM, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. At 13 K, hyperfine fields of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ were 516 kOe and 490 kOe, that of $Fe_3O_4$ were 517 kOe and 482 kOe. The saturation magnetizations were 21.42 emu/g and 39.42 emu/g. The particle size of powders is 5~19 nm.
This work aims at characterizing silicon grains and its compacts. In order to remove iron silicon grains were washed with 5N hydrochloride at 60-7$0^{\circ}C$ for 170 hrs, and then followed the chemical analysis by atomic absorption spectrophotometer X-ray diffraction analysis SEM observation and specific surface area determination by B. E. T. Mixtures of graded silicon particles with two or three different sizes were made into packings by mechanical vibration. The mixtures were used to make compacts with 10 mm in diameter and 70mm in length by isostatically pressing at 1, 208 kg/$cm^2$ (20 kpsi) and 4, 255kg/$cm^2$ (60 kpsi) respectively. Bulk densities of packings and compacts were measured. A slip made of magnesium nitrate solution and fine silicon particles was spray-dried and then decomposed at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for the purpose of coating the uniform layer of magnesium oxide on the surface of particles. The results obtained are as follows: (1) About two thirds of iron content could be removed from silicon by washing silicon powders with hydrochloride. (2) Uniform layer of magnesium oxide on the surface of silicon could be prepared by spray-drying suspension and by decomposing it. (3) B. E. T. specific surface area of fine silicon particles was 2, 826.753$m^3$/kg. (4) In the binary system with two sizes of 40-53$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles and <10$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles the maximum bulk density of packing was 55% of theoretical value and that of compacts made at the pressure of 4, 255 kg./$cm^2$ (60 kpsi) was 73% of theoretical value. (5) In the ternary system with three sizes the maximum bulk density of packing was 1.43 g/$cm^3$and that of compacts was 1.80g/$cm^3$which is equivalent to 77.6% of theoretical value. The composition of the closest compact was consisted of 50% of 40-53$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles 20% of 10-30$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles and 30% of <10$\mu\textrm{m}$ parti-cles.
Nanofluid is a novel heat transfer fluid prepared by dispersing nanometer-sized solid particles in traditional heat transfer fluid to increase thermal conductivity and heat transfer performance. In this research we have considered the rheological properties of nanofluids made of CuO particles of 10-30nm in length and ethylene glycol in conjunction with the thermal conductivity enhancement. When examined using TEM, individual CuO particles have the shape of prolate spheroid of the aspect ratio of 3 and most of the particles are under aggregated states even after sonication for a prolonged period. From the rheological property it has been found that the volume fraction at the dilute limit is 0.002, which is much smaller than the value based on the shape and size of individual particles due to aggregation of particles. At the semi-dilute regime, the zero shear viscosity follows the Doi-Edwards theory on rodlike particles. The thermal conductivity measurement shows that substantial enhancement in thermal conductivity with respect to particle concentration is attainable only when particle concentration is below the dilute limit.
