  • The relation between the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders and the properties of solvents, such as dielectric constant and solubility parameter, was investigated for TiO$_2$, $Al_2$O$_3$and Fe$_2$O$_3$particles. The particle size and median diameter of these metal oxides were measured in many organic solvents, from which the effect of solvents on the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders was considered. The metal oxide powders of TiO$_2$, $Al_2$O$_3$and Fe$_2$O$_3$tend to disperse in a solvent of higher polarity, whereas they are apt to flocculate in a solvent of low dielectric constant, because the Hamaker constant between the particles becomes larger in such a solvent. There we, however, some solvents that do not obey these tendencies. It is possible to evaluate the flocculation and dispersion of these metal oxide powders in many solvents by using numeral balances of Hansen’s three-dimensional solubility parameter (f$_{d}$, f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$). There exists a solvent giving the optimal dispersion for each metal oxide, and the optimal dispersion point of f$_{d}$, f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$ is determined by the combination of various metal oxide powders and solvents.nts.nts.nts.

  • The self-cleaning properties of nano-zinc oxide on cotton fabrics have been investigated. The cotton fabric has been prepared by pad-dry method. The nano-zinc oxide was encapsulated in the polystyrene particle by mini-emulsion process prior used. The loading amount of zinc oxide particles into the mini-emulsion were various from 1% wt to 40%wt. The particles sizes of ZnO-encapsulated polystyrene mini-emulsion were determined using dynamic light scattering. It was showed that the particle size of the mini-emulsion was in the range of 124-205 nm. The topography and morphology of ZnO-encapsulated polystyrene which coated on cotton fabrics was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The crystal structure of ZnO-coated on cotton fabrics was explored by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of zinc oxide were present through the self-cleaning properties. The presents of the zinc oxide on cotton fabrics significantly showed the improving of the self-cleaning properties under UV radiation.

  • With the increasing demand for electronic products, the amount of multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) waste has also increased. Recycling technology has recently gained attention because it can simultaneously address raw material supply and waste disposal issues. However, research on recovering valuable metals from MLCCs and converting the recovered metals into high-value-added materials remains insufficient. Herein, we describe an electrospinning (E-spinning) process to recover nickel from MLCCs and modulate the morphology of the recovered nickel oxide particles. The nickel oxalate powder was recovered using organic acid leaching and precipitation. Nickel oxide nanoparticles were prepared via heat treatment and ultrasonic milling. A mixture of nickel oxide particles and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as the E-spinning solution. A PVP/NiO nanowire composite was fabricated via E-spinning, and a nickel oxide nanowire with a network structure was manufactured through calcination. The nanowire diameters and morphologies are discussed based on the nickel oxide content in the E-spinning solution.

  • In this study, an environment-friendly synthetic strategy to process zinc oxide nanocrystals is reported. The biosynthesis method used in this study is simple and cost-effective, with reduced solvent waste via the use of fruit peel extract as a natural ligation agent. The formation of ZnO nanocrystals using a rambutan peel extract was observed in this study. Rambutan peels has the ability to ligate zinc ions as a natural ligation agent, resulting in ZnO nanochain formation due to the presence of an extended polyphenolic system over the whole incubation period. Via transmission electron microscopy, successful formation of zinc oxide nanochains was confirmed. TEM observation revealed that the bioinspired ZnO nanocrystals were spherical and/or hexagonal particles with sizes between 50 and 100 nm.

  • The microstructur and LPG sensing properties of maghemite (${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$) ceramics have been studied. The acicular and fine spherical shaped iron oxide particles were sintered at below $900^{\circ}C$. The maghemite ceramics were prepared by reduction-oxidation of sintered iron oxide. With the microstructure of acicular and/or fine grains, the maghemite ceramics have good LPG sensing properties. Increased sintering temperature deteriorates the LPG sensitivity of maghemite ceramics due to the grain growth. The maghemite ceramics prepared from the mixed iron oxide, of a large amount of acicular particles and a small amount of spherical ones, have a lower LPG sensitivity than that of the acicular iron oxide ceramics. But, they seem to be of higher mechanical strength. The optimum working temperature for LPG sensing of the maghemite ceramics was found to be $300~350^{\circ}C$.

  • Graphene, a new material with various advantageous properties, has been actively used in various fields in recent years. Applications of graphene oxide are increasing in combination with other materials due to the different properties of graphene oxide, depending on the number of single and multiple layers of graphene. In this study, single-layer graphene oxide and multi-layer graphene oxide are spray coated on polystyrene, and the physicochemical properties of the coated surfaces are characterized using SEM, Raman spectroscopy, AFM, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and contact angle measurements. In single-layer graphene oxide, particles of 20 ㎛ are observed, whereas a 2D peak is less often observed, and the difference in surface height increases according to the amount of graphene oxide. Adhesion increases with an increase in graphene oxide up to 0.375 mg, but decreases at 0.75 mg. In multi-layer graphene oxide, particles of 5 ㎛ are observed, as well as a 2D peak. According to the amount of graphene oxide, the height difference of the surface increases and the adhesive strength decreases. Both materials are hydrophilic, but single-layer graphene oxide has a hydrophilicity higher than that of multi-layer graphene oxide. We believe that multi-layer graphene oxide and single-layer graphene oxide can be implemented based on the characteristics that make them suitable for application.

  • A strong SERS effect has been observed on silver surfaces which were prepared by Ag deposition in anodic aluminum oxide nanotemplates and subsequent partial removal of the oxide layers. The advantage of these surfaces for SERS studies is that the controlled size and dispersion of Ag particles can be achieved.

  • A precipitation behavior of nano-oxide particle in Fe-$5Y_2O_3$ alloy powders is studied. The mechanically alloyed Fe-$5Y_2O_3$ powders are pressed at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1h, $850^{\circ}C$ for 1h and $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1h, respectively. The results of Xray diffraction pattern analysis indicate that the $Y_2O_3$ diffraction peak disappear after mechanically alloying process, but $Y_2O_3$ and $YFe_2O_4$ complex oxide precipitates peak are observed in the powders pressed at $1150^{\circ}C$. The differential scanning calorimetry study results reveal that the formation of precipitates occur at around $1054^{\circ}C$. Based on the transmission electron microscopy analysis result, the oxide particles with a composition of Y-Fe-O are found in the Fe-$5Y_2O_3$ alloy powders pressed at 1150oC. It is thus conclude that the mechanically alloyed Fe-$5Y_2O_3$ powders have no precipitates and the oxide particles in the powders are formed by a high temperature heat-treatment.

  • Porous silica particles are the most prevailing raw material for stationary phases of liquid chromatography. During a long period of time, various methodologies for production of porous silica particles have been proposed, such as crashing and sieving of xerogel, traditional dry or wet process preparation of conventional spherical particles, preparation of hierarchical mesoporous particles by template-mediated pore formation, repeated formation of a thin layer of porous silica upon nonporous silica core (core-shell particles), and formation of specific silica monolith followed by grinding and calcination. Recent developments and applications of useful porous silica particles will be covered in this review. Discussion on sub-$3{\mu}m$ silica particles including nonporous silica particles, carbon or metal oxide clad silica particles, and molecularly imprinted silica particles, will also be included. Next, the individual preparation methods and their feasibilities will be collectively and critically compared and evaluated, being followed by conclusive remarks and future perspectives.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigated the surface roughness and change in the amount of adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to the commercial pit and fissure sealant containing cerium oxide nano particles(CNPs). Methods: The CNPs was incorporated into a commercial pit and fissure sealant at 0-4.0 wt%. Disk Specimens (ϕ 10 mm × 2 mm) were prepared by light polymerization the front and back for 40s. Average surface roughness was measured and Streptococcus mutans adhesion was observed under confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) after 24 hour. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSDa post-hoc test. Results: Difference of the surface roughness(Ra) between groups was not statistically significant in both non CNPs group and CNPs group(p>0.05). In CNPs group, the amount of S. mutans adhesion was significantly different between control group and decreased in order of CNPs 4.0, CNPs 0.5, CNPs 1.0 and CNPs 2.0(p<0.05). Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, these aspects of oral bacteria performances suggest potential usefulness of the CNPs incorporation, especially CNPs 1% and 2%, in pit and fissure sealant for inducing antibacterial effect.
