The production of fine metal oxide particles in supercritical water has been studied. Cobalt nitrate solution and manganese nitrate solution have been selected as model solutions for metal salt aqueous solution and the particles of cobalt oxide and manganese oxide have been produced. It was observed that the production of fine metal oxide particles in supercritical water was feasible and the dehydration rate was remarkably high in supercritical water. In spite of a short residence time (3~100 seconds), fine particles ($0.5{\sim}2{\mu}m$) have been produced. In the supercritical water process, the temperature of mixer had a significant effect on particle size and size distribution. It was observed that a change in reaction temperature resulted in the control of particle size.
The concrete is considered as an important radiation shielding material employed widely in nuclear reactors, particle accelerators, laboratory hot cells and other different radiation sources. The present research is dedicated to the shielding properties study of the ordinary concrete reinforced with different weight fractions of lead oxide micro/nano particles. Lead oxide particles were fabricated by chemical synthesis method and their properties including the average size, morphological structure, functional groups and thermal properties were characterized by XRD, FESEM-EDS, FTIR and TGA analysis. The gamma ray mass attenuation coefficient of concrete composites has been calculated and measured by means of the Monte Carlo simulation and experimental methods. The simulation process was based on the use of MCNP Monte Carlo code where the mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ) has been calculated as a function of different particle sizes and filler weight fractions. The simulation results showed that the employment of the lead oxide filler particles enhances the mass attenuation coefficient of the ordinary concrete, drastically. On the other hand, there are approximately no differences between micro and nano sized particles. The mass attenuation coefficient was increased by increasing the weight fraction of nanoparticles. However, a semi-saturation effect was observed at concentrations more than 10 wt%. The experimental process was based on the fabrication of concrete slabs filled by different weight fractions of nano lead oxide particles. The mass attenuation coefficients of these slabs were determined at different gamma ray energies using 22Na, 137Cs and 60Co sources and NaI (Tl) scintillation detector. The experimental results showed that the HVL parameter of the ordinary concrete reinforced with 5 wt% of nano PbO particles was reduced by 64% at 511 keV and 48% at 1332 keV. Reasonable agreement was obtained between simulation and experimental results and showed that the employment of nano PbO particles is more efficient at low gamma energies up to 1Mev. The proposed concrete is less toxic and could be prepared in block form instead of toxic lead blocks.

A single particle analytical technique, called low-Z electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z EPMA) was applied to characterize atmospheric particles collected in Busan, Korea, over a daytime period in Dec. 2001. The ability to quantitatively analyze the low-Z elements, such as C, N, and 0, in microscopic volume enables the low-Z EPMA to specify the chemical composition of individual atmospheric particle. Various types of atmospheric particles such as organics, carbon-rich, aluminosilicates, silicon oxide, calcium carbonate, iron oxide, sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and titanium oxide were identified. In the sample collected in Busan, sodium nitrate particles produced as a result of the reaction between sea salt and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere were most abundantly encountered both in the coarse and fine fractions. On the contrary, original sea salt particles were rarely observed. The fact that most of the carbonaceous particles were distributed in the fine fraction implies that their origin is anthropogenic.

Europium doped yttrium oxide submicron-sized particles were prepared by ultrasonic aerosol pyrolysis. To examine the size effect of submicron-sized-particle, the photoluminescence of the particles was investigated. The particle size was controlled by pH, reaction temperature, molar concentration of yttrium in precursor solution. The PL intensity of submicron-sized particles was decreased with particles size. When the particle size is above about 150 times of Bohr radius of Y$_2$O$_3$, the optical property of the particles shows the bulk characteristics.
Composite particles of porous silica and cerium oxide nanoparticles blocking UV/blue light were prepared through a dry coating process. Various composite particles were prepared by varying conditions such as the mixing ratio of cerium oxide and silica, and the chamber rotating speed of mechano fusion system. The surface morphology of the composite particles was observed with SEM and the composition was analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). When the cerium oxide/silica composite particles were dispersed in water, the transparency and dispersion stability of the colloidal solution were improved. In addition, the fluidity and spreadability of the particle powder were enhanced by making composite particles. These results show that cerium oxide/silica composite particles can be used as functional cosmetic ingredients for UV/blue light protection.
Metal oxide particles with mole ratio of aluminum: titanium of 1:1 were synthesized by a sol-gel method. Langmuir (a) and Freundlich (b) adsorption isotherms of dissolved lead [Pb(Ⅱ)] ion on the metal oxide particles containing aluminum and titanium were determined as follows, respectively,(a) , (b) at pH 6where, correlation coefficients (R2) of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were 0.95 and 0.96, respectively. The overall adsorption rate of Pb(Ⅱ) on the metal oxide particles containing aluminum and titanium was determined by a differential bed reactor. The overall adsorption rate at pH 6 was as a following equation.at pH 6
To achieve the fabrication of high-quality Ag-coated Cu particles through a wet chemical process, we reported herein pretreatment conditions using an ammonium-based mixed solvent for the removal of a $Cu_2O$ layer on Cu particles that were oxidized in air for 1 hr at $200^{\circ}C$ or for 3 days at room temperature. Furthermore, we discussed the results of post-Ag plating with respect to removal level of the oxide layer. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the removal rate of the oxide layer is directly proportional to the concentration of the pretreatment solvent. With the results of Auger electron spectroscopy using oxidized Cu plates, the concentrations required to completely remove 50-nm-thick and 2-nm-thick oxides within 5 min were determined to be X2.5 and X0.13. However, the optimal concentrations in an actual Ag plating process using Cu powder increased to X0.4 and X0.5, respectively, because the oxidation in powder may be accelerated and the complete removal of oxide should be tuned to the thickest oxide layer among all the particles. Back-scattered electron images showed the formation of pure fine Ag particles instead of a uniform and smooth Ag coating in the Ag plating performed after incomplete removal of the oxide layer, indicating that the remaining oxide layer obstructs heterogeneous nucleation and plating by reduced Ag atoms.

The anodic oxidation behaviour of a cast component of AC2A Al alloy with machined surface and ascast surface was investigated in sulfuric acid solution. The anodized specimen showed relatively uniform and thick anodic oxide films on the as-cast surface, while non-uniform and very thin oxide films were formed on the machined surface. Non-anodized as-cast surface was observed to be covered with thick oxide scales and showed a number of second-phase particles containing Si, while non-anodized machined surface showed no oxide scales and relatively very small number of Si particles. Thus, the very limited growth of anodic oxide films on the as-cast surface was attributed to the presence of thick oxide scales and Si-containing second-phase particles on its surface.
Alumina particles were grafted onto the surface of manganese oxide particles via the coprecipitation process using surfactant and cosurfactant. The phase of Mn/Al salts (Phase I) and the phase of precipitation agent (Phase II) were prepared in aqueous surfactant solution, separately. Phase II was added into Phase I and the reaction was performed to form the precursors of composites through hydrogen bonding between $Mn(OH)_2$ and $Al(OH)_3$ prepared by the reaction of Mn/Al salts with the precipitation agent. The alumina-grafted manganese oxide particles were obtained as a final product after calcination. The concentrations of Al salt and surfactant were varied to investigate their effects on the formation and the crystallinity of composites. In addition, the crystal structure of products could be controlled by changing the calcination temperature. Through thermal analyses, it was found that the thermal stability of manganese oxide was improved by the introduction of alumina on its surface.

The oxide film of silicon wafer has been mainly polished by fumed silica, colloidal silica or ceria slurry. Because colloidal silica slurry is uniform and highly dispersed composed of spherical shape particles, by which the oxide film polished remains to be less scratched in finishing polishing process. Even though the uniformity and spherical shape is advantage for reducing the scratch, it may also be the factor to decrease the removal rate. We have studied the correlation of silica abrasive particles and CMP characteristics by varying pH, down force, and table rotation rate in polishing. It was found that the CMP polishing is dependent on the morphology, aggregation, and the surface property of the silica particles.
