  • Innovations in the biofiltration process can provide effective solutions to overcome crucial water pollution problems. The elimination of pollutants is a result of the combined effects of biological oxidation, adsorption and filtration processes. This research aims to evaluate the performance of quartz sand biofiltration for removing total suspended solids, turbidity, color, organic matter, and ammonium from polluted river water and develop an empirical model for designing quartz sand biofilters for the treatment of polluted river water. Experiments were conducted using two biofilter units filled with quartz sand as filter media. A set of experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of hydraulic retention time on biofilter performance in removing water contaminants. The kinetics of organic matter removal were also determined to describe the performance of the biofilter. The results show that biofiltration can significantly remove river water pollutants. Removal efficiency depends on the applied hydraulic retention time. At a hydraulic retention time of two hours, removal efficiencies of total organics, ammonium and total suspended solids were up to 78%, 82%, and 91%, respectively. A model for designing quartz sand biofiltration has been developed from the experimental data.

  • Due to pressure from threatened legislation in Europe, consumer and governmental pressure in Japan, and glob머 market considerations in the US, there is a rapidly growing interest in lead-free solderinger, Although the move to lead free soldering seems inevitable, many problems will arise in production assembly. It is generally acknowledged that the lead-free solders available offer a much s smaller process window than lead/tin, related mainly to the higher soldering temperatures which naturally result from increases of liquidus temperatures of at least 300 C. However, raising reflow temperatures from the current 220-2300 C to 250 2600 C will lead to problems with the boards and components as well as i increasing oxidation effects. There is a need to keep reflow temperatures low without reducing solderablity. Some results on benefits of inert atmospheres are discussed in this paper. For example, testing in a nitrogen atmosphere, with 300 ppm oxygen, by the N National Physical Laboratory (NPU has revealed clear benefits for ine$\pi$mg lead-free alloys, by restoring the solderability to lead/tin levels, by enabling lower soldering temperatures. However, there has been little testing over a range of oxygen levels in nitrogen and this is an important issue in determining n nitrogen supply and oven costs. Some results are reported here from work by NPL conducted for BOC in w which solderability was evaluated for tin기ead and tin/silver/copper eutectic a alloys in a wetting balance over a range of oxygen levels form 10 ppm to 21% ( (air). The studies confirm that acceptable wetting times occur in inert atmospheres a at soldering temperatures 20 to 300 C lower than are possible in air.

  • SiC has an excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, high temperature strength and good thermal conductivity. However, it is difficult to density because of its highly covalent bonding characteristics. Hot-press sintering process was applied to fabricate fully densified SiC ceramics with carbon and boron addition as a sintering additive. The addition of carbon improved the mechanical properties of SiC because it could induce a fine and homogeneous microstructure by the suppression of abnormal growth of SiC grain. Also, the addition of carbon could control the phase transformation of SiC. The phase transformation of 6H to 4H increased with sintering temperature but the addition of carbon decreased that kind of phase transformation.

  • Nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide and manganese (II,III) oxide can be synthesized by the freeze-drying process of the mixed colloidal suspension of graphene oxide and manganese oxide, and the subsequent heat-treatment. The calcined reduced graphene oxide-manganese (II,III) oxide nanocomposites are X-ray amorphous, suggesting the formation of homogeneous and disordered mixture without any phase separation. The reduction of graphene oxide to reduced graphene oxide upon the heat-treatment is evidenced by Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy. Field emission-scanning electronic microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry clearly demonstrate the formation of porous structure by the house-of-cards type stacking of reduced graphene oxide nanosheets and the homogeneous distribution of manganese ions in the nanocomposites. According to Mn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, manganese ions in the calcined nanocomposites are stabilized in octahedral symmetry with mixed Mn oxidation state of Mn(II)/Mn(III). The present reduced graphene oxide-manganese oxide nanocomposites show characteristic pseudocapacitance behavior superior to the pristine manganese oxide, suggesting their applicability as electrode material for supercapacitors.

  • Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most severe environmental problem that results from the oxidation of pyrite $(FeS_2)$ and various other metal sulfides. In this study, the influence of microorganism was tested on the process where AMD was released and the method to inhibit AMD generated by microorganisms at abandoned mine area. The activity and growth rate of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, common microorganisms affecting AMD occurrence, were measured. Chlorine dioxide $(ClO_2)$, NaCl, or surfactant (ASOR-770) was used as an inhibitor for working on activity and growth of microorganism. Among the three inhibitors, 10ppm of chlorine dioxide was the most effective inhibitor for AMD control due to the reduced the activity and growth of microorganisms by 20%.

  • Dry sieving, wet sieving and photoscattering analyzer were tested as particle size analyzing methods for sediments from rivers and lakes of Han river, Nakdong river, Youngsan river, and Kumgang river area. Dry sieving showed a big error due to coagulating effect over drying process and this phenomena was severe for lake sediment. Wet sieving and PSA showed an accurate results though wet sieving needs more labor and complicate processes. Freeze-dry or freeze-dry after oxidation of organics with hydrogen peroxide showed improved results but gave lower portion of fine particles in comparing with wet sieving. Heavy metal contents and extractable metal contents were investigated for the sediments and high heavy metal content and extractable amount were obtained from fine particles as expected. Using of proper particle size analyzing method is important and the sediment management should be focused on the fine particles.

  • Nanostructured $TiO_2-SiO_2$ materials have widely been used as anti-reflecting coating, optical-chemical sensors and catalysts because of their superior optical and thermal properties as well as chemical durability. Web type $SiO_2$ microfibers with nano-crystalline $TiO_2$ were prepared by electrospinning of Ti-PCS mixed solution and oxidation controlled heat-treatment, rather simple than sol-gel process. Nano-crystalline anatase phase were formed for the heat-treatment up to $1200^{\circ}C$ and they were finely dispersed in the amorphous $SiO_2$ matrix.

  • In this research, life cycle inventory database (LCI DB) was developed for liquid CO2 employing life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. As are result of characterization and normalization process, production of liquid CO2 puts on environmental impact in the order of resource depletion, global warming, acidification, eutrophication and photochemical oxidation, and among a wide variety of input, electricity contributes in most of the impact categories. Air emission plays a key role in the acidification and eutrophication while ammonia affects most on the ozone depletion. It is anticipated that development of liquid CO2 LCI DB makes it possible for national environmental strategies to be more activated including environmental labeling scheme.

  • Several experiments have been done to investigate the removal of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) synthetic gas from biogas streams by means of chemical absorption and chemical reaction with 0.1-1 M Fe/EDTA solution. The roles of Fe/EDTA were studied to enhance the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide because of oxidizing by chelate. The motivation of this investigation is first to explore the feasibility of enhancing the toxic gas treatment in the biogas facility. The biogas purification strategy affords many advantages. For instance, the process can be performed under mild environmental conditions and at low temperature, and it removes hydrogen sulfide selectively. The end product of separation is elemental sulfur, which is a stable material that can be easily disposed with minor potential for further pollution. As the Fe-EDTA concentration increased, the conversion rate of hydrogen sulfide increased because of the high stability of Fe-EDTA complex. pH as an important environmental factor was 9.0 for the stability of chemical complex in the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide.

  • We studied on the decoloring effect of viscose rayon by vapor type ozone processing using ozone's strong oxidation. When ozone is generated, it becomes high concentration in vapor state, but in the insolving process with water, there are a lot of lose of ozone. As a result, a study using ozone in vapor-high concentration state is needed. So, in this paper, vapor type ozone processing is used unlike previous ozone treatment method-an aqueous solution method-to get a good effect from shortening the processing time. When vapor type ozone processing was directly treated to fabrics, high concentration ozone was generated then in a short time oxidized a dye existed in fabrics and finally decolored it. As vapor type ozone did not directly response to an organic dye, viscose rayon's decolorization was to be studied by changing pick up ratio(60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%) using water as a medium. When pick up ratio of water was 40%, fabric's whiteness was improved but tensile strength and elongation were reduced. So 60 minutes was assumed as the most adjust time to minimize the reduction of fabric's tensile strength and elongation moreover of maximize the improvement of whiteness.
