  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the potential risk factors - children's factors, parental factors, and familial-environmental factors - with respect to overweight and obesity in Korean preschool children. Methods: This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design and involved 264 pairs of mothers and preschool children aged 3-5 years (121 boys, 143 girls) attending daycare centers in C city. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to identify significant risk factors for overweight and obesity in preschool children. Results: According to the multivariate logistic regression, family history of diabetes mellitus as children's factors, overweight or obesity of both parents as parental factors were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of overweight and obesity in preschool children. In addition, lack of community space for physical activity as familial-environmental factors was significantly associated with increased likelihood of overweight and obesity. Conclusions: Health care providers should concerned with the risk of overweight and obesity in children with high risk familial factors, such as family history of obesity and diabetes mellitus. Moreover, policies should be set in place to make sure communities include space that foster physical activity in young children.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare obesity-related quality of life according to obesity classification by BMI (body mass index) and self-assessment. Methods: The participants were 286 female college students in J City. Data were obtained by measuring height. weight and BMI, and using a questionnaire for self-assessment of obesity, weight control, and quality of life. The quality of life was measured using 14 items of the Korean version of obesity-related quality of life (KOQOL). Results: Thirty five percent of the students assessed themselves as overweight and obese despite their BMI <$23m^2/kg$(false overweight). True overweight students with BMI $\geq23m^2/kg$ who perceived themselves as overweight and obese were 23%. The total KOQOL score between true and false overweight students showed no significant difference. True overweight students had a lower total KOQOL score including psychosocial, physical, daily living, sex related. and food-related domains than true normal weight students. Conclusions: The quality of life was not different between true and false overweight students. These results indicate that self-assessment about obesity affects the quality of life like as actual BMI in female college students. Therefore, it is necessary to care students who distort themselves as obese.

  • Objective : Being overweight or obesity impairs quality of life and often causes treatment noncompliance in patients with bipolar disorder. This preliminary study evaluated the prevalence of overweight and obesity in inpatients with bipolar mania. Methods : Inpatients with bipolar mania, who were treated with adequate medications at least 4 weeks were included in a retrospective study. The body weight of each patient was measured and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Results : Of the 80 patients, 16.4% (N=13) were overweight, and 35.0% (N=28) were obese at discharge. Female patients had higher prevalence rates of overweight and obesity. Being overweight or obesity was associated with the number of previous episodes of depression and combination treatment with atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. Conclusions : Being overweight or obesity is highly prevalent in patients with bipolar mania. Clinicians should pay more attention to weight gain and obesity when prescribing combination therapies. More research is required to identify the impact of specific risk factors for overweight and obesity in patients with bipolar mania.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine whether demographic and socio-economic characteristics, health behaviors are related overweight and obesity in Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behaviors web-based Survey(KYRBWS) administered in 2019 were analyzed: 60,100 students in middle and high school participated in the survey. But except 1,555 missing value, 55,748 students were analyzed. It was conducted frequency analysis, Rao-Scott chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: The significant influencing factors on overweight and obesity of adolescents were gender, economic status, father's educational background, alcohol experience, fastfood consumption, muscle strengthening exercise, stress perception(p<.001). The odds ratio for overweight and obesity of male adolescents compared to female adolescents were 1.19(p<.001). and The odds ratio for overweight and obesity of perceived stress adolescents compared to those who without stress were 1.13(p<.001). Conclusions: I found that adolescents' some undesirable health behaviors affect their overweight and obesity, I recommend that school health promotion programmes should be implemented in schools to form good health behaviors such as healthy eating habits, physical exercise and managing stress.

  • Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of preschooler obesity/overweight and to identify associated factors. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study. Data for 591 preschoolers, 432 fathers and 538 mothers from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014 were included. Obesity/overweight was defined by 2007 Korean National Growth Charts. T-test, Rao-Scott ${\chi}^2$, multivariate logistic regression was used for the analysis. Results: Prevalence rates for preschooler obesity/overweight were 14.9% (obesity, 5.4%; overweight, 9.5%). The preschoolers with atopic dermatitis or allergic rhinitis or asthma (OR=2.78, 95% CI [1.27-6.09], p=.011) and eating more thiamine per day (OR=1.01, 95% CI [1.00-1.02], p=.001) showed higher obesity/overweight development. The only parental factor affecting preschooler obesity/overweight was parental body mass index (father, OR=1.18, 95% CI [1.09-1.28], p<.001; mother, OR=1.09, 95% CI [1.04-1.15], p<.001). Conclusion: Interventions on preventing preschooler obesity should be introduced much earlier for children with risk factors. Results from this study can be used as preliminary data to develop effective strategies to prevent obesity in Korean preschoolers.

  • This study explores the influence of health behaviors and individual attributes on adolescent overweight and obesity using data from Wave II (Add Health). Structural equation model/ path analysis using maximum likelihood estimation was utilized to analyze the relationships of health behaviors and attributes with obesity. Results of the model reveal that the causal paths (adolescents' attributes and health behaviors) for overweight and obesity were different for African American and Caucasian adolescents. Generally, African Americans were more susceptible to overweight and obesity than Caucasians. Although increasing levels of vigorous physical activities lowers the risk for obesity among African American and Caucasian adolescents alike, low family SES and being sedentary were associated with overweight and obesity among Caucasians. No significant associations were found among African Americans. Increased hours of sleep at night relate positively with obesity among African Americans. These findings suggest important elements in the consideration of race in developing effective intervention and prevention approaches for curbing the obesity epidemic among U.S. adolescents.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We investigated the associations between eating away from home (EAFH) and overweight and obesity among Ugandan adults using the 2014 Uganda non-communicable disease risk factor survey. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In total, 3,025 participants aged 18-69 years were included in the analysis. The frequency of EAFH was assessed by asking participants the number of meals eaten per week that were not prepared at a home. EAFH frequency was categorized as; less than once/week, 1-2 times/week, or ≥ 3 times/week. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations between overweight, obesity, and EAFH. We also tested whether sex and age modified these associations. RESULTS: Participants that ate away from home ≥ 3 times/week were 2.13 times more likely to be obese than those that ate away from home less than once/week (odds ratio [OR], 2.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.28-3.54). However, when the analysis was stratified by sex, women that ate away from home ≥ 3 times/week were 42% less likely to be overweight than those that ate away from home less than once/week (OR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.36-0.94). Men that ate away from home ≥ 3 times a week were 3.89 times and 2.23 times more likely to be obese and overweight, respectively, than those that ate away from home less than once/week (obesity: OR, 3.89; 95% CI, 1.50-10.09; overweight: OR, 2.23; 95% CI, 1.42-3.51). Age-stratified analysis showed that among participants aged 31-50 years, those that ate away from home ≥ 3 times a week were 3.53 times more likely to be obese than those that ate away from home less than once/week (OR, 3.53; 95% CI, 1.69-7.37). CONCLUSIONS: Frequent EAFH was positively associated with overweight and obesity among men, and obesity among young/middle-aged adults, but negatively associated with overweight in women. Nutritional interventions for obesity reduction in Uganda should include strategies aimed at reducing the frequency of eating meals prepared away from home, and specifically target men and young/middle-aged adults.

  • Objectives: Obesity is regarded as one of the most prominent health threats worldwide and a serious risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes mellitus type 2, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and some types of cancer. Given the role that societal development-as reflected by the Human Development Index (HDI)-may play in the prevalence of obesity and overweight, this study aimed to investigate the degree to which the prevalence of obesity and overweight is affected by HDI and its components. Methods: In this ecological study, the required data on HDI and its components were gathered from the latest report of the United Nations Development Program, and data on obesity and overweight were acquired from the latest reports published on the World Health Organization website. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 24.0. Results: The prevalence of obesity was determined to be significantly higher among females than males, and the gross national index per capita was found to be significantly higher for males than females (p<0.05). Significant positive correlations were found between HDI and its components and sex, as well as indices of obesity and overweight. Conclusions: A significant positive correlation exists between HDI and obesity. As policy-makers attempt to improve the general welfare of the people, they should be aware of potential unwanted effects of development on the risk of obesity and overweight among the population.

  • objectives: This study was conducted to estimate medical expenditure attributable to overweight and obesity in adults with ischemic heart disease and stroke using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination survey data and Korea National Health Corporation data. methods : The medical expenditure of ischemic heart disease and stroke related to overweight and obesity were composed of inpatient care costs, outpatient care costs and medication costs. The population attributable risk (PAR) of overweight and obesity was calculated from national representative data of Korea such as the National Health Insurance Corporation cohort data and 2005 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination survey data. results: The medical expenditure attributable to overweight and obesity of ischemic heart disease were 97.4 billion won(74.1-122 billion won). and stroke were 64.6 billion won(33.1-98.1 billion won). Consequently, these costs corresponded to 11.4% of total medical expenditure due to ischemic heart disease and stroke. conclusion: We conclude that overweight and obesity have increased medical expenditure from ischemic heart disease and stroke in Korea. These findings provide important support for implementing overweight and obesity management strategies in Korea.
